* PLAYING HOOKY HEADPHONE WARNINGS *

Here I was, thinking that Yoshiki and Hikaru were going to have some communication between each other...but...we're....not ready for that yet!

Instead, Yoshiki takes a much more dramatic approach and my heart was in my stomach the entire time watching this episode -- these two need hugs! And to know how they are literally each other's anchors!

Ray Quigs

we get some echos of "Of Mice and Men" in this episode.

Love this episode. Lots of meaty stuff here so I wrote a lot. That last speech from Hikaru has some of the most emotionally charged lines from the manga (the “You became home to me,” stuff.) I have some different reads on the minor scenes with other members of Yoshiki’s family. The big one is that while I agree with the common reading that Yoshiki’s dad probably had a thing for Hikaru’s dad, I don’t think that gayness is what the scenes of him at work were getting at. The super-childish way the new worker speaks and acts to me screams that he is a teen who didn’t go to high school and got a job instead which is quite common in rural Japan. So he is essentially the same age as Yoshiki. The repeated references to Yoshiki were because the anime direction was trying to draw a contrast between how Yoshiki’s dad could act fatherly, just not to his family. With Yoshiki’s mom and Kaoru, I think her “It’s okay today too?” is a follow up to a question we don’t see where she asks to not go to school today. We don’t know anything about the situation, but I don’t really see any indication that her mom is the inciting factor here. I think the way the scenes with Kaoru and her mom are framed versus the badmouthing from people in town about how she should go to school are meant to make us think she really shouldn’t. Having lived in Japan and worked in education, I am personally a bit skeptical of some of the ways Japan handles this stuff, but that is how I read Mokumoku Ren’s attitude. Could be wrong though. I have some slightly different reads on Yoshiki’s attitude towards Hikaru here too, although we end up at the same place. I do think Yoshiki misunderstood (or “willfully ignored” seems more Yoshiki-core) that Hikaru really just wants him to be happy too. But I don’t think that was because he was acting like Hikaru was just an emotionless monster because he hurt Asako. A pretty key part of Yoshiki for me is that he pretty consistently buys that Hikaru has genuine strong emotions and feels strongly towards him. He acts compassionately towards Hikaru even when it seems totally uncalled for. It is lowkey what saved his life when he initially called Hikaru out too. His saving grace. I think the reason Yoshiki calls himself out as being an idiot who does the same thing over and over again at the end is basically nothing has changed despite all the drama. He still cares for Hikaru just like he did while planning to kill him. He still thinks Hikaru being here will probably get everyone killed. But he is going to stay with him anyway. On a more lighthearted note, Tsumo sounds less like Killua than Ron sounds like Gon because it is actually a dumb mahjong joke. Both Ron and Tsumo are different ways of declaring different kinds of wins in mahjong (think saying “checkmate”, “uno”, etc.) I love the sub-sub-sub-plot of Hikaru developing a potentially queer reading of a battle shonen in the background of the story. Him lying there knocking the Gon and Killua dolls together and prompting Yoshiki to tell him why they get along together so well is very funny. Love it when monstrous entities get into like soap operas, romance novels, or in this case, classic manga.

Maybe I missed you saying it or I did get it wrong in the first place. But Hikaru’s and Yoshiki’s fathers used to work together, right? And the new guy is replacing Hikaru’s dad.

Yoshiki - *behaving in the most classic suicidal way possible for the whole day* Hikaru - I have no idea what is going on but I'm not sure I like the vibes Like he really even proposed going to the beach. Hikaru behaved a little bit like a dog that thinks the owner is sad and gives them their favourite toy because they think the human will feel better thanks to it

Generation Wumbo

The new guy isn’t really replacing Hikaru’s dad since he died years and years ago.

Also, forgot to mention that the ED in this episode is actually a duet between the two of them.

Oohhhh, it's been so long since I've seen that play, but I can so see it! Thank you for the comment!

Yoshiki was throwing up ALLLLL the red flags! Yes! *screams* Poor Monster!Hikaru had no idea what to make of it, but at least he noticed something was "off," which speaks a lot! Ugh, and that description of Hikaru being the puppy that is trying to cheer up their owner is soooo good - and also darkly hilarious when Hikaru is basically the monster and Yoshiki is afraid he'll hurt someone! Thank you for the comment!

So much happening this week and I love it! We love to see Monster!Hikaru show Yoshiki just how much he means to him! I can see what you mean about Toshi acting “fatherly” - it’s just a shame he’s not doing that with his own literal son who’s right there, but we’ll see where that goes! And yeah, I got the vibe in the discussion as I talked about that the mom isn’t making the daughter go to school, but I was just sharing my thoughts on the implications of her not making the daughter go. But that’s cool you’ve worked in Japan and seen that side of things! I can only offer my perspective as a small town educator and what I’ve seen as well. And it’s cool to have different reads from me! There’s no “correct” and “incorrect” here, just different perspectives, which is why I offer my own in the discussions and probably why you’re here watching and why I’m reading comments haha!! Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective!
