This was a great episode as the Chihaya usual. I really respect Retro kun alot he gets the short end of the stick alot in the story but his heart is so pure I want to root for him as well. I love that his girlfriend is Nishida's sister. I hope we get her name soon she seems like a caring no nonsense person. Im curious if she's older or the same age. I think the secret weapon Retro was referring to was Sudo since he knew Sudo was coming still doesnt take away from how much I love Retro and his new girlfriend. I love the concept of sports anime whether it's Haikyuu or Kuroko or AOD that when a central person leaves the team the whole dynamics of the team can change and with Amakasu leading while in theory there is no problem if he wants to take it easy there is a strength to being a relaxed person the team has clearly lost its foothold because he is still growing as a captain. This is why I like that Retro and Sudo in spirit haha wont let them fall apart. Chihaya and Kana are such highlights of this episode I like that they are going by their own rhythm and fired up. I think similarly to how you would feel self-conscious if your crush is watching you I think Nishida not expecting his sister to be there just lost his bearings and caused him to stress out and be tense even more because I dont think his stamina was a problem before this episode I could be forgetting something. While at the beginning of the season I would get on to Taichi about mansplaining I would have to disagree with your nitpick here because he's providing key insight to Chihaya. Chihaya is always fired up and her principles on playing karuta does narrow her perspective at times so she genuinely doesnt get why for something as important and exciting as the finals Hokuo would take the easy way out and not come out guns blazing. Taichi is simply explaining to her that for recognized strong schools this is a strategy that would guarantee the win since that's what people expect of strong schools. Chihaya herself wants them to be a strong school/powerhouse in karuta so this perspective is crucial for her. I think there is a fine line with constructive criticism and mansplaining or being obnoxious. I think Taichi was just being informative here. Sudo being a reader I love Im not going to speak on the whole conflict of interest thing since I dont know much about it and also spoilers as well. I think your point of Taichi needing to take his own advice is true to an extent. I think for me that while giving an excuse is not too far off from being insecure there is a difference. Tsukuba saying oh Kana is tired and therefore I can play better than her has no reliability to it because Kana herself hasnt confirmed that she is tired or nothing has suggested leading up to this moment that Tsukuba's improvements surpasses Kana's current achievement so that is an excuse for him to play. Taichi's verbal and inner declarations do cripple his actions and therefore it does lead to the same result as giving excuses. However, Taichi's insecurities do have a basis or evidence in the moment that give him the false impression that he cannot achieve something and enable his insecurities. I've worked hard and not made it out of Class A therefore Im not talented. Episode 4 this girl is more talented than me because she's doing better than me in this match so something is wrong with me. I think that Taichi does run away alot which is what he has vowed to work on but for me giving excuses is more giving a reason to back out when you dont want to put in the work or you want to take responsibility for something you're not actually ready for which is not quite what Taichi does. I definitely think Taichi needs to pep talk himself more for sure tho. Im looking forward to seeing the rest of this match and where we go from here.

I brought up in my previous comment the fine line between giving into insecurities vs giving excuses in regards to Taichi. Now different sites has different translations to this scene. So to compare the mom says Men should never start their sentences with but while another site says What kind of man starts their sentence with but I think the difference in phrasing can seem simple but has two different tones and meanings to it. The second phrasing feels less that she is dictating what men should be like in a nagging and absolute way and more of her telling Taichi in growing up to be a man dont be the kind that will start your sentence with but in other words dont grow up to be a man that gives excuses. Chihaya's response is also slightly different instead of saying your mom helped you to become stronger she says your mom helped you become a better player. I think one thing is definitely true that because Taichi has played several sports and been in several competitions the mom has rightfully so instilled in Taichi that he should not give excuses for his losses and while Taichi has insecurities when he loses he does follow these principles and as he tells Chihaya in this moment he pays attention to when he makes excuses. In the two times that Taichi has lost in the Class B finals he always acknowledges where circumstances were fairly stacked against him for example going up against a third year in the first final but at the same time acknowledges that he is lacking and needs to improve. After he loses to Nishida he says I tried my best but that's no excuse. Taichi does overly berate himself I wont leave that out but I remembered this and wanted to add it to what I posted earlier. Hope it's insightful.

I never thought I would say this, but Retro-kun was amazing this episode and gained all my respect. Retro-kun been the only one from Hokuo that wanted to take the match seriously, even if they were already garanteed a spot in nationals, and doing something about it was super cool. And I love how while it does parallel a bit Tsukuba always trying to change the order of players it really highlights what is wrong with the way Tsukuba does it; because Retro-kun, for one, did it out of a desire to make the whole team better and push them to do their best, and at the same time, he provided information that the whole team agreed on, even if that information wasn't as accurate as he might have lead them to believe; while Tsukuba, both times, has tried to change the order of players out of a selfish desire to either show-off to his brothers or improve alone without proper consideration to what was best for the team as a whole, and did it behind everyone's backs and without their consent instead of trying to convince them that it was the right course of action. It's an interesting parallel. No, I agree, the moment we realize that Sudou was going to be the reader for that last game I was thinking that Hokuo was going to have an unfair advantage. And it is sort of a premeditated thing, as Mochida says, when talking about the current president of the club, that he knew that he was going to take the game to relaxed, in a ways that, to me, clearly stated that he looked to bring Sudou as the reader to put pressure in the team and make them take the game seriously. Sure, maybe Mochida couldn't be 100% sure that Hokuo would make it to the finals, but Hokuo is also the best team of their area, so the possibilities were very high at the same time. I feel like Sudou reading that last game shouldn't have been allowed in view of that, and maybe he could have read another game, semi finals or something, if he really wanted the practice. Up to this episode I don't think that I had been able to really understand the appeal of karuta; I mean, sure, it seems fun enough, but aside from that I didn't quite get it. And then, the Empress described it in this episode with such awe, and it hit me square in the chest, just how beautiful karuta is and how amazing it must be to experience it live. Oh my, I laughed so hard at Nishida's sister being Retro-kun's girlfriend because I was NOT expecting that but it fits so well xD I need to see more of them now. Alright, I'll admit that Taichi saying that only the boys weren't allowed to use the word "but" anymore was a little sexist. And yet, if I make memory I don't think I can remember the girls making nearly as many excuses about their loses as the boys, except Tsutomu, have. I can't wait to see Chihaya finding her own style as a mix of both Suou and Shinobu's style! Making her own style, not a copy, that's what I really want for her, and I think being precise as Shinobu but having the keenest ear like Suou is the perfect style for her. Needless to say, I'm really hyped for the next episode and to see how this match ends.

I really don't want to pull the "cultural card" again, lol, but the whole "but" thing is a cultural thing. Well, it's also a linguistics issue too. In Japan, as you probably know, there is a casual way to speak, a formal way as well as an assertive and a submissive way of speaking. Unfortunately, because we don't have that here, when translating it to English you have limited options and it ends up sounding sexist when it is actually more of a maturity issue. It doesn't help that with women it has almost an opposite effect, where speaking in such assertive ways has other implications like loose morality. It's similar to the ore/boku/watashi pronoun use, were we translate it to male and female versions, but it's actually more of a formal, informal and assertive, although that also doesn't quite capture the sentiment or meaning of their usage.

Yes! It’s interesting the way that tone is emphasized so much with ‘relation’ to the speaker! That is a great point to bring out about that use of the wordage in the dialogue against Chihaya and Kana so good point through this - thanks for noting that in the comments!

I have a lot of respect for Retro-kun after this episode! I was nodding and so with what he was saying this week! Good for him! That is really cool with the tie-in on Tsukuba, too! I hadn’t considered that! I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought that with Sudo. And yeah, I thought that, too; that you HAD to know Hokuo would have gotten close to the Final, if not in it! I’m 100% with you on that front! I love the Empress’s description of it! And Nishida’s sister as Retro-kun’s girlfriend was SUCH a surprise! I love it! I hope they’re everywhere and Nishida can adjust! XD Yeaaaaaahhhh, the girls have not made many excuses as to losing - or at least, not to the extent as Tsutomu and Taichi, so definitely projection in that moment! I love the concept of Chihaya combining styles! Yessss, and making it her own; I think that’s her next step, but we shall see! I agree on the combo working for her! I’m super hyped as well! Thank you for the comment!

Chihaya just doesn’t miss, does she?! I love Retro-kun’s development in this season so far! And Nishida’s sister being his girlfriend is wonderful. Good for them! Did we not get her name?! I can’t remember. I hope we get it, too! Ahhh, that’s a fair point about Sudo…but they honestly seemed just as surprised that he was there, so I’m not sure on that. In any case, it was quite the surprise! I love Chihaya and Kana in this episode! It’s okay if we respectfully disagree! I still think he has a long way to go and needs to be a little more open-minded to Chihaya and the fact that she’s learning *coughcough* like him *coughcough.* She has been the opposite of how he portrays her in this episode - calm, cool, collected - Taichi is the one that’s the “pot calling the kettle black” with the “Buts” argument, but I’m confident he will grow as a character - but I’m going to call it like I see it, but everyone’s welcome to share their perspective, so thanks! And thank you for not spoiling on conflicts of interest - we’ll see it as it comes! I’m definitely looking forward to watching these characters grow, though!

romaniablack

I love that you love Taichi so much as a character - I do say in every episode I love him too, but I will point out things I notice or are personally irked about with his character if they happen - they’re just my irks; y’all don’t have to agree with me. I do still think the idea of saying that it’s something that “men” should worry about is a little outdated in its construction…but Taichi is definitely projecting from himself when he gives this pep talk to the guys - and it’s fine - but the one we’ve seen give a lot of the excuses in this series so far has been…Taichi himself. But he’s been growing and we love him for it! Keep it up, Taichi! We’re rooting for you! But thank you for the comments and perspective!

Taichi needs to learn just like Chihaya absolutely he doesnt know everything and he doesnt have to and alot of times Taichi realizes this himself for example with his past failures as the president and this is how he grows as we would want to see and Im looking forward to more of that. My comment about him not mansplaining was not referring to the not saying but argument because yes while Taichi doesnt give excuses in the same way Tsukuba does in this episode which was selfish of Tsukuba and not thinking of the other players he still is one of the first characters to get unnecessarily pessimistic and spiral unlike Chihaya. I think Taichi definitely needs to learn alot more from Chihaya and stop seeing her as an airheaded little kid because Chihaya is definitely alot more mature than he thinks. I was simply saying that before the match Chihaya was confused why Hokuo would slack off and Taichi explained why and you called that mansplaining. However, there's nothing wrong with what he did here he's giving a simple explanation which is useful for us as well to be reminded of. This is why I said that constructive criticism is different than being obnoxious and Chihaya's philosophy on karuta gives her a limited perspective sometimes compared to Taichi who can immediately see certain strategies objectively.

romaniablack

Yes! I agree about Taichi needing to learn like Chihaya and I specifically talk about that in the discussion. 🙂
