*SUPPORTIVE HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Y'all will have to excuse me ranting this week because as Azuma is struggling between helping his crush and the guilt of association, the layers of his trauma are revealed and his "TRUE" savior is as well!

The questions are: Is that savior too late? Has Shizuka turned heel? Are there ANY realistically compassionate adults in this world? And what is Takopi going to do about all this?! These are valid questions, no?

I understand your critique so far that there are aspects that aren't "statistically realistic". Azuma's story in regards to his brother is however unreliable. We never see the end of his image and just snip bits about his interactions with his brother. He wants validation and recognition from his mother but in truth there is very much recognition and kindness around him. But Azuma does not pursuit these kinds of acknowledgement by "strangers" or people that aren't his mother. Why was Junya "acting out"? Because he found a better life away from his mother. At the same time however education and gaining skills and titles is very much helpful in the competitive society. For Junya his mother was maybe kinder to him. But she still demanded top results. So Junya has a weird relationship to his mother probably as well which shines through his comment about Azuma being alike his mother. So he does not see the full picture and problem probably and at the same time is probably somewhat positively prepositioned towards their mother. And since their mother is also working very much it seems they probably do not talk that much in the first place. Junya says he does not care about Azuma's grades which is true but at the same time we never see his clear opinion about his mother and his relationship with her or his grades. We can see that he is an overachiever and does not necessarily disagree with the mothers approach in a weird way since he became older. His motivation to speak with Azuma was the incident with Marina. Junya opens up a little bit but apparently they talked through the night which you can see when you look at the scene at the beginning and at the end and compare the light. So in conclusion about Junya: He maybe has stuff going on on his own which is understandable and at the same time their mother abused Azuma more and more gradually. Many things remain unclear but I am sure Azuma knows the truth after their conversation. But we as the audience don't. Maybe we are going to get deeper to Junya but so far this episode regarding Azuma and Junya is more symbolic than actually resolving. I get your point but at the same time I feel like the title is Takopi's original sin which is why I feel like the story which we want from an realistic story we won't get in regards of an caring adult stepping in since the protagonist Takopi still has their role and needs space in an 6 episode anime. So personally I do not care but at the same time I understand the criticism that the show is following a more symbolic and selected focus on certain themes. And to Shizuka: Kids are human so they have emotions. I can't really explain but Shizuka smiling to Azuma is a different smile-face than her smiling on her own to Takopi at the end. But I can't really explain what it means.

This episode was really good and had lots to talk about. I will agree that the lack of a helpful adult is jarring so your criticism is fair. I think however it is an interesting message to have - what if you're in a completely messed up world where the only truly innocent being was an octopus shaped alien named Takopi who doesnt understand humans to begin with and even their innocence has no positive effect on the society. March comes in like a lion is definitely a more grounded series and a series I will revisit often for how it deals with bullying and the school environment etc but I equally like Takopi's original sin's direction of let's be as unhinged as possible. I think people could definitely make a case study of this show as this is the many ways to fail your children or to be a failed society and what could have been the alternative. A show like this where the worst case scenario is fully on display is an interesting take but I totally get your criticism. Episode 4 really came out swinging and said there is no such thing as a perfect victim Shizuka is just as twisted as Marina which is also a result of her environment. She has no one to guide her and from my point of view she is disassociating to the max right now her whole world has been her dog and she is desperate to achieve this goal just as much as Azuma is desperate to help her. Do I approve of her throwing Azuma under the bus? Absolutely not she has clearly learned the basics of what her mom's job is that if I please men and comfort them they will provide everything for me and I want to just shake her. It doesnt surprise me however that she lacks alot emotionally because of how much she was tortured and ignored. Her emotions have been surpressed for so long that they're basically broken at this point. I feel so bad for Azuma being in this situation because the only thing wrong he has done at this point is be overly-helpful and if those mommy issues didnt exist he is a smart kid and he would have made smart choices and seen all the red flags and avoided it. I'm not blaming Azuma btw. This episode has perfectly portrayed why he has taken the actions that he does and it was gut wrenching to watch him suffer like this. I still feel for Shizuka and Marina no child should have to go through what they did the unfortunate thing is that in real life some do but it doesnt change the fact that both of them have willingly sacrificed the happiness of others for the sake of their desired happiness. I think that's also something important to keep in mind if part of this show is Takopi figuring out what it means to spread happiness. I have some thoughts on Shizuka ignoring Azuma entirely. Shizuka has two people in the world she cares about and it's not even her mom at this point - her dog and her dad who she constantly has been wishing to come back. Now that both are seemingly in Tokyo she has a one track mind and her receiving validation from Azuma does not matter because the person she wants that validation from isnt here. Yes this is highly problematic and troublesome but it is unfortunately the reality of Shizuka's thinking that will be interesting to see what the show does with it.

I want to talk about Junya as well and I think there are several layers to this that go beyond Junya noticing or not. I think Junya wasnt at home to witness exactly how bad it was but he most likely knew that Azuma was struggling. I'll get back to this point. Junya from what we get in this episode grew up under the same kind of pressure that Azuma did but he handled it well from what we see and at the same time chose to leave it behind. For Azuma because his mom created this competitive environment of oh you have to be like your brother it doesnt surprise me that Azuma villainizes his brother even if he's done nothing wrong. If we bring up Sangatsu no lion Kyoko and Rei are classic examples of this. For Azuma he's upset at his brother because everyone expectations are on him and yet he has fun with friends and do all these different things while Azuma himself has to struggle and as he says this to Junya in that scene that he believed that Junya didnt understand him which I dont think is because of Junya not trying to reach out to him but Azuma projecting his insecurities. From the first time we see Junya in episode 3 till now Junya has always been the one to initiate the conversation oh you're outside Azuma with your friends hey I heard what happened at school etc. I think Junya has always tried to talk to Azuma and reached out to him but Azuma has been rejecting him out of his insecurities. The way Junya says Im here for you and just stares as Azuma runs away from him to the bathroom gives me the impression of a big brother who is waiting and saying I want to help you but you have to give me an opening. I think if Junya could have helped Azuma he would have but because Azuma wont communicate and also puts everything on himself to do things perfectly there is a barrier as to where does Junya insert himself into the picture and not to mention Junya is also a powerless entity a 16/17 year old teenager who the most he can do is listen and find an adult figure to help. I think as much as we talk about Shizuka's inaction there is as well an inaction on Azuma's part that needs to be talked about. If someone says hey I think this was the first time Junya stepped up and so he's at fault I think that's fair but I dont think this is the first time I think he has always tried but because Azuma cant see past the insecurities it hasnt gotten anywhere.

I dont know if this is considered a spoiler but I guess thank you mods for your diligence if it is but when Junya is talking about buying his girlfriend a ring he then looks at Azuma and points to his face in episode 3 and says you've been wearing these for a long time now on my next paycheck I'll...and we dont get to hear what he says because Azuma's train of thought gets interrupted but I think Junya noticed Azuma's glasses were well beyond expiration and was going to buy him a new glasses.

I agree that Azuma's story compared to Shizuka and Marina is less fleshed out and there are things we have to assume through context clues. Junya while he is a kind person he has not experienced what Azuma has experienced with their mother and so he will naturally be able to see some positives to the mom that Azuma or us as the viewers cannot because again this series is mostly from the perspective of a traumatised kid and plus Junya is older and therefore has seen most likely more vulnerable sides to the mom in regards to her work as a doctor especially if he was being prepared to be the heir. I dont think in the moment Junya saying oh she's hardworking is him simply saying all hail mom she's the best. First of all he breaks the illusion of the pancakes which were a symbol of mom's love but also her perfection and says hey the pancakes sucked when he used to eat them as a child and for Azuma in the morning they looked like the best thing in the world after they came out the fridge. He then says so mom worked hard implying that she knew the pancakes sucked and worked on improving them. Junya is saying hey little bro mom and these pancakes you've been idolizing they are by no means naturally perfect and you shouldnt have them as your goal but what you should be praising isnt perfection but hardwork and determination which you already have and it's what your mom had to do. I think Junya in his own way recognizes that Azuma looks up to his mom despite all this abuse and is doing what the mom never did by giving him the acknowledgement that he wants by saying hey your hard work is valuable but also saying hey you thought your connection with mom was severed but your hard work connects you to her which while we hate the mom I think Azuma needed that. I think the most powerful moment of this episode of Junya saying you have me was chef's kiss and him saying as well Havent you been listening to me at all really makes me think that Junya has been trying beyond this moment to get his brother to open up and he has been closed off. In the montage that happens after he says Im your brother we see Junya being such a good big brother in the past and some subtle scenes of him putting a blanket over him when he fell asleep studying and noticing him walking home alone. I again dont think Junya knew down to the minute detail what was happening with his brother but knew something was wrong and did try to help leading up to this moment but was rejected by Azuma. These are all speculations and personal interpretations but this episode despite the controversy is incredible.

It was considered a spoiler by the mods as I haven't seen past episode 4 yet, but thank you for the comments!

I totally agree that’s probably a glaring “eye-squint” moment for me and because the series is so short, we don’t get to see the full impact of Azuma and his brother’s relationship. Granted, I LOVE that Junya is there for Azuma and a ray of light for him - thank god! He needs it! I think a lot with your comment I agree with is that yeah, we don’t have enough time with Junya to know to the extent if he was abused - or not - and how it’s affected him and the connection to Azuma - and that’s probably just because the manga is so short. It is what it is, but I felt like bringing up that in the discussion. I think if the series was 12 episodes instead of 6 we could have got that - I get it and I can understand why people would say, “it’s fine, doesn’t bother me,” but I think it’s fair that I can express my criticism and not be slandered for it, so thank you for being kind and respectful in your response! I appreciate that sentiment! I’m curious where this series goes from here, so thank you for your comment and perspective!!

I'm going to put my response to this with your comment response below this! :D

Thank you for the comments and for sharing your perspective! I think my frustration at Junya’s character from looking at the mangaka is that we have to “guess” and “assume” and make our own takes on Junya’s character because we don’t get clarifications. The mangaka needed to give us more insight into what his abuse - if any - was happening with the mom, because it’s not known. We just know the mom puts him on a pedestal, but we see him rebel, so there’s SOMETHING there, but the mangaka doesn’t spend time developing that. A lot of what you said I discussed in the discussion, so I’m with you, there. I am glad Junya was there for his brother because we all know Azume NEEDED someone like that in his life for this moment of the episode. I do agree that yeah, it seems Junya is trying to talk to Azuma from the start, so that is a good point and I’m glad Junya wasn’t portrayed in the way Azuma imagined (and how all the adults in this series are portrayed), so that’s a good point to bring up! That is also valid that Azuma was doing inaction as well, so it’s good that Junya finally broke through and MADE Azuma listen to him. I did really like this episode - it’s just the lack of realism with adult presences that takes me out of it and makes me go, “Oh, this is just a series about worst case scenarios” - which has its place and is important but I just like a little more depth to be present for me to give it a 10/10, but it’s still a 9/10 for me so far! I think March also has the benefit of being longer and having time to spread out! And Takopi’s unhinged state is serving itself well - it’s comparing apples and oranges - maybe a lesson to not tell a reactor this is “the best” series and hype them up – you didn’t do that, but some have and here we are. But I respect Takopi for what it is doing so far in other aspects and yes, this episode comes out swinging! Thank you for sharing your perspective too - I was nodding through a lot of your comments! I agree that Shizuka’s actions are understandable…but so frustrating! Thanks for the comment!
