I do think Shizuka just doesn't really care about anyone but Chapi even before the ded Marina incident. we can see that Naoki reached out countless times and she didnt care at all. Her treating everyone the same when they become useless, just like how she treated Naoki and now Takopi, so that part is pretty in character to me lol.

The more I watch this show and your reaction to it the more I get the impression that the author did not want to create a great/round story with no plotholes and nuance but rather wanted to create reactions and discourse about the themes in the series and let the audience expand on it and create nuance and fill those holes in the show. So I agree with the added depth and scenarios you came up with and I think it is meant to trigger such thoughts in the viewers. So the point is not that these characters in the show learn something and bring a message towards the viewer through it but rather that the characters and surroundings are flawed to the core and can't get out of it and with the premise of Takopi the viewer tries to help the situation. In a sense we the audience experience the absurdity of another world like Takopi does when he enters the human world and we try to solve this fictional world with our premise of our human world. So I think I agree with you when you say the first 3 episodes seem more refined and better than the last 2 episodes which is also linked with the absence of Takopi taking action in the last 2 episodes so leaving the viewer alone to hope for a better outcome which Takopi at least tried to achieve. So we are left alone and we despair because without Takopi there is no miracle that could solve this messy scenario that the author gave us! Either way and regardless of how this show will conclude itself in the next episode I think it will remain as a reference-point for future shows that dive into similiar themes and/or narration styles.

This plot twist was crazy but did a good job in portraying as you pointed out the Marina perspective that we were lacking. To put things into context both Marina and Shizuka are 9 in 2016 and therefore 15 in 2022. So there are plot points I won't be able to tie in until the last episode but I think it's fair to say that with this episode yes there is some melodrama. Last episode with Azuma mom was definitely not melodrama because even in elementary school at their age about to enter middle school we were advised to seek help from a teacher if your parents tell you that you're worthless etc and I heard stories of kids who from they were a child basically had the I'm giving up on you moment from their parents if expectations were not met Anyways point is that while there is melodrama in this episode there is within that melodrama some layers to the characters that I believe exist and want to talk about. First of all the dad so yes of course we were expecting drama with the dad and I mentioned it last week while her focus is Chappy at one point in the montage she does say I'm going to see dad and Chappy and she does mention in episode 1 how much she wanted her dad to come back so her main objective is Chappy because as you discussed he won't betray and after seeing the two kids her dad has she probably realized that Chappy is all she has. Now again context clues assumption the two daughters he has the oldest definitely seems to be Shizukas age now again while yes this would need expanding on it could very well be that the dad was unfaithful and this is why Shizuka mom wants nothing to do with him or give him the benefit of the doubt and he remarried into a family that had two kids or a child already but if it's the unfaithful part it would make alot of sense why he would not openly say this is my daughter and show any sort of care for her. This moment again as you have fairly said is melodramatic but there are possible layers. I want to address before I continue with Marinas mom the whole is Shizuka dumb of course she's not she knows what she's doing and even if she doesn't fully realize the layers of wrong that this is because of lack of moral guidance she knows it's wrong but has suffered so much that she doesn't care and only cares about her happiness which is a mirror to her own mom as well to an extent. Shizuka knows what she's doing and at the same time she is emotionally and mentally twisted by the events around her which again similar to Marina is not an excuse for her actions but a perspective to it. There are some interesting things you have brought up with Shizuka returning like who supported her etc it's very possible with the neglect of the mom and her being found post attempt that she was put in child protection services or through a program and now with her being 15 and almost at the age where she can get a part time job etc she is probably being sponsored in some way. This is just a theory btw. Regardless I think I agree with alot of reactors speculation that Shizuka maliciously took advantage of Azuma for revenge for the bullying she endured from Marina and it would tie into her actions we see her capable of as a child only now she is older and they are more reinforced. Now the whole revenge stuff could be wrong but her face is not one of a innocent girl who isn' trying to not be manipulative

Thanks for your thoughts and reaction as always. I don't know this for certain, but I was wondering if the meds that Marina's mom takes are for a type of mental disorder? Not that in anyway excuses anything. I think it might hint at her being bipolar. Some of the ways she acts reminds me of it. Also, I agree some scenes did not have to be so dark to make the point.

It's definitely going to be on a future poll in 2026! Thanks for the comment!

Yes, I would agree with that - Shizuka just cares about Chappy; it's in-character, I agree...I just wish her character was more...three-dimensional, maybe? But I get why she's that way, it's just personal preference. Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, I can see that 100%! There’s nothing wrong with that - I suppose when I heard people online saying this was one of the best anime in “existence,” that did set up some expectations for me - and it’s fine if they’re not met. I’ll just need to adjust my sights for the finale, since we have one more episode to get through…everything? Wild times! And that is a great point about Takopi being inactive more in the last 2 episodes - after he stops trying to get involved when Azuma shuts him down in Marina’s form, things do get more off the rails. I appreciate you offering your perspective, so thank you for the comment and sharing that! Yes, one to go!

I could totally see that being the case with Marina’s mother taking medication for something of that nature, so that’s really good to point out. And yeah, I feel the audience understands how dour the circumstances are without it having to be over the top, but that’s a stylistic choice and I can see how some would enjoy it!
