Oh man! This was a juicy episode. I do have something to say about it since I am an atheist and of course, the uncle was not the best example of humanity, or atheism. I always have to shake my head at that because the atheist always gets put in that corner. I would not call that being atheist, I would say that guy is just a selfish person. We will revisit this. Yes, I’m being a bit defensive here because I’m in an out group. During the Thanksgiving break, my dad and I had a good talk about a bunch of things. We are both very left leaning but I am more of a democratic socialist, he is not. Yeah, I’m pretty far left. So the question he proposed to me was what to do about homelessness. I have ideas, but to get in the weeds of this subject practically requires the whole of society to be changed. Yes it begins with education… My dad said it was impossible to eradicate homelessness. It is too big a problem that requires more money and it is more complicated than just giving a person a home. Not to mention all the other issues such as mental illnesses and drug dependence. I saw where my dad was going with this, there is no magic bullet for any of societies problems. So, the other question my dad asked me is if we were on the streets, we as individuals would do anything we could to survive and somehow make it through the day. This includes escaping our situation, with drugs. I kinda was like, I can’t picture myself doing that. My dad didn’t hesitate, he was like, he would, he would escape such a dismal existence just to make it through a day, just to survive. I have to think about this a bit more. One thing people say often is that everyone is capable of such things if pushed to them, including killing. I’d say my dad was being easy on me, usually he asks me a physics question. This brings us to money as security. I feel it all the time. Even with a decent living that gives us a comfortable home, I always think that economic disaster is a medical emergency away. This is unfortunately a growing experience in our country, the most wealthy nation in the world. I know my little family is privileged to an extent. We live in a good neighborhood, we are comfortable, etc…. But what if we were not so lucky? What if we had to find a place to live that was in a more economically disadvantaged neighborhood? How safe are those people? I’m sure they don’t feel safe. Then I see our most wealthy neighborhood, walls and gates, cameras and a mansion built like a fortress. Yes, money can buy you security…. Especially if you have been put in a position of vulnerability. Being a woman in a disadvantage area is not as safe as a woman in a prosperous area. I feel that. But as you pointed out, money can itself be a prison and a trap, a secure fortress that shuts out the world. One character I was thinking about when you were discussing splitting up the profits between all the people was Luca from Berserk. In her case it was again, so no one would feel like there was any one person who was favored. Inequality was deliberately avoided. It was a survival tactic. Their profits were equally share and also distributed to their neighbors. Inequality will foster jealousy and possibly conflict. This can tear a group apart. Just thought I’d bring that up. Ok, now we get to morality. So what makes us moral? If you asked me, we are just wired that way. We are social animals that exist in families, and community groups, etc … it is a survival tactic that was hardwired into us, it’s easier to live when you help your neighbors. You may need their help later on! The work that is shared is easier work. To protect people you care about is to protect the group because it takes a lot of people working together to protect everyone. Of course, this also works against us because if you are part of the out group…. You are the enemy. This is so hardwired into our lizard brains that it has become a cornerstone of our current political policies. So, does religious faith have anything to do with morality? I’d say no it doesn’t. Especially in the year 2025. Did faith have anything to do with morality at the time of this anime takes place? Maybe? My view on this topic is a modern take on morality that has thousands of years of philosophy, biological research and analysis of human behavior coloring this take on belief. Heck, this is how I was raised! 🤷‍♀️ my folks made a conscious decision to not indoctrinate us in what they felt was a hypocritical faith system. We are Hispanic so, it was Roman Catholicism that they rejected. The sins of the church was just too much for my folks to justify believing in it. They definitely have their checkered past to grapple with. My parents abandoned a belief in a god, absolutely. My father and I also talked about this to a degree. We were mainly complaining about the hypocrisy of the Christian Nationalists. Sometimes the most Christ like people I have known are the ones that are not Christians. Having said that, I know a lot of awesome Christians as well. People are complicated. I always view belief or lack of a belief as more of a journey that sometimes you need in order to survive this life. Now for a clarification. Agnostic is no knowledge of a god. This means that if there was knowledge that there was a god then it’s called Gnostic. Atheist is no belief in any god, Etc… So most atheist usually, if they are honest, would classify themselves as an agnostic atheist. I bring this up because of that uncle. Yes, he says that #1 god doesn’t exist, there is no evidence for one to exist. #2 learn to think. I have to wonder if he was a deep thinker? #3 discover your conviction in life…. So his conviction is to stay alive by throwing others under a bus to live another day. This kind of reminds me of what my dad said about escaping a dire situation by any means possible even if it ment becoming a druggie. I do not agree with this and I still think this uncle is a selfish. But I can’t rule out that people who exist on the fringe would be pushed to deeds that would seem selfish and cruel. I don’t think it really has anything to do with a belief or non belief but a drive to just stay alive. I find this very sad and depressing. But I see some truth in this. I hope I never find out what I would do if this were to come to pass. Ok, I’ve written a book. Two more things: my life rule about money. If I give it I don’t expect to ever see it again. It is a gift. It takes all the weight off! I saw a video a while back about a person who worked for others. That means that he lived within his means and any extra money he made he donated it all. I try to do that but on a smaller scale. It’s not really to make myself feel good but to put into practice an empathy for others who have a greater need than myself. It’s my way of sharing my good fortune. I would hope that if I had a need, that I would be helped in kind. I do not understand the avarice of Musk and the other billionaires that bleed us dry. They could help so many people! It makes me sick. https://youtube.com/shorts/MYEAK-Uh-fo?si=1FyFbpAyzgyQblh0 The other thing is, I’ve slept in the car as well. Husband and I were on a road trip from Cali and on the way back to Tejas, we stopped at a truck stop to sleep. It was ok… as you said, not very comfortable, but when you are tired, you can sleep anywhere! Great episode with lots to chew on! I hope I made sense and I’m kind of surprised that my conversation with my dad kinda meshed with the ideas in this episode to a point. I can’t wait for next week’s episode! Also, my niece who was on the trip as well is getting into anime! She is 16. So I suggested Natsumes Book of Friends and also some Shojo like Nana. I’m such a happy auntie!

Such a juicy episode, yes!! I agree fully the uncle isn’t the best example of atheism, so I appreciate you adding your two cents as well! And that’s a fair point about him just being selfish! Democratic socialist, huzzah! And yes, no magic bullet to solve problems! Hahaha, I could not see myself doing drugs, either…but I will admit if it would be easy to spiral if you felt hopeless or if you felt you weren’t getting anywhere. With the concept of money as security, yes, I feel that too especially as I see students who don’t have that opportunity I’ve been given and are more worried about it as me. Also, us being the “wealthiest country” in the world feels like it needs an asterisk at this point. Oohh, Luca is an interesting character to bring up in all this! I hadn’t considered that but it’s a really good character and point of view to bring up! I love that concept of morality and how we are hardwired to help our neighbors! I love that talk about “the enemy” and the “community!” And then the discussion of religion with it! I appreciate you sharing your views on the subject! My grandfather was a preacher, but because my dad grew up with it, he really wasn’t as religious as an adult and my mom is “spiritual” but not religious, so I didn’t grow up in a church every week (though my rural area is HEAVILY Christian so I did go to various churches with friends after being invited a few times). Great point about christians and that your religious background doesn’t always guarantee you’re a great person or not. Gnostic sounds like “gnome” and that’s kind of funny to me. And great clarification on the uncle; I’ll have to bring that up in the future! And yeah, it is a sad situation, especially with what led the Uncle to reach this point of expression. Hahaha, don’t feel bad about writing a book; y’all know how I ramble in my videos! That is a great point about the “money rule” - it really DOES take the weight off! And the practice of empathy is really there! The avarice of billionaires is wild - they could help so many people; exactly! That video is wild…ugh…it’s so sad. And yeah, if you need to sleep in a car - you gotta do it! My best friend has before and I can say I have - but yeah, as long as it’s in a public place where you know there’s some safety, you do what you have to! This episode had so much to chew on, I agree! And yeah, I love when the real world applications start to affect all of this, right? So good!! And yay for your niece getting into Anime! I love that! Natsume’s Book of Friends is sooooo perfect for a teenager!! I’m so glad you can recommend that! Thank you for the comment - someday, I hope to get into Nana!
