*SOARING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I've honestly been wanting to dive into this movie for nearly two DECADES but never got the chance and now, here we are! I was so excited and this Studio Ghibli film from the 80's DID NOT DISAPPOINT! There is so much to gush about!

Thank you, Shimoyama, for the amazing commission! This was one for the books and one of my favorite Ghibli films, now!

There are other Ghibli movies that I prefer, but this was always my childhood favorite. Easily up there with stories like Treasure Island as one of the best pure adventure stories ever told. It is also one of the most referenced movies in Japanese media once you start looking for it. Insanely iconic. Famously, it airs yearly on Nippon TV's Friday Roadshow movie slot every summer vacation and everyone tweets/posts the spell to destroy the castle simultaneously. I'd guess it and Spirited Away are probably the most seen Ghibli movies statistically in Japan.

My brother and I value Nausicaa and Castle in the Sky the most and they are our comfort anime We watched them when we were sad and having fun I like them because the environments are destroyed, the earth got damage in Castle in the Sky However there are tiny hopes Trees will slowly solve the toxic environment in Nausicaa and the trees will protect Laputa and the guardian with his friends and we believe that Pazu and Shitaa will live together happily I like these littleness without big force Thank you for watching this film I'm really glad to hear your thoughts

Loved the reaction and discussion! Your excitement for this film was really infectious, I’ve seen this loads of times just in the background and it really felt like a new experience this time around. 🥰 I also have to say, for any fan of the film or its ENG dub, I would absolutely recommend checking out the version with the newer orchestral score! This was the first time I believe that I watched this version and it was a really interesting experience. I don’t think a JPN original version with the new score exists. And the ENG dub is excellent. I don’t feel like much needs to be said how much of a masterpiece it is in terms of art and animation – just such amazing quality front to back. Now, of course, themes of resistance?! 😆 Plenty! Most of all, I really enjoyed what I feel is the film's central idea: that when it comes to inheriting immense power, the ethical choice is not about inheriting it “well,” or righteously, but destroying and renouncing that power. Yes! Thank you for noting this line: “What is a kingdom when its country lies in ruins?” Ghibli films continue to wrap all of its anti-imperialist messaging in such beautiful packaging, I adore it. 🥰 Also loved the discussion around this film's likely inspiration for elements of AOT and NGE. Thank you to Shimoyama for another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! ❤️

I agree -- this was a really cool surprise, though! And just a PURE adventure, yes! I was thinking that this would have been so great to have watched as a kid! And yes, seeing all the references are so iconic! Awww, that's so cool that it's a cultural event to watch the show and tweet about it in moments! I love that. And I don't blame Spirited Away for being right up there - it's so good! Thank you for the comment!

Ahhh, I can SO see both of these as SUCH a good double-feature, and for comfort anime as well! I would have loved to have seen this when I was younger. And yes, despite all the damage in this world, the movie shows hope in the end! And yes, it's all so natural - not forced - and I appreciate that about the film! Thank you so much for commissioning it - this was SUCH a fun watch; I really enjoyed it and will be re-watching again in the dub at some point!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I was SO excited to see a new Ghibli film and this was such a fun ride! And ooohhhh, you have really sold the English Dub (and new SCORE) , so I will need to see it! I don't need another excuse to see this movie again, hahaha! And yes, this is indeed an animation masterpiece! I love that concept of when inheriting power, it's about destroying it instead. LOVE THAT! There is so much that's been inspired by Ghibli and that's so fun to see on display! Shimoyama did so well on this! This coming week is going to be SO FUN, though!
