Moominkomet

I absolutely love all the girls! I think you are reading Agott is for the most part a great reading with this information we know so far. For some reason, she reminds me of my sister…. I think it’s the long curly hair. Oh, I was busting out in tears with that image of Coco’s mother guiding her hand. It made me think of my mom. Oh yes, hands as so important! We have to remember, they are an instrument that we always forget about. Oh the Brush buddy! To me they kinda resemble the Hattifateners from the Moomins. The Hattifateners are more mysterious and a bit dangerous, but they are also just Hattifateners. https://youtu.be/lcd_mQYmePU?si=AS6Mbl-QpJon9pB8. https://youtu.be/gf8H-IsrI3o?si=wxtDd28QEYanUBpr Brush buddy is a lot nicer! Great discussion as always! Until next week!

Watching this as I crochet my own brushbuddy :) About the dub: I do enjoy the variety of accents. Tetia's is Danish, though a lot of people have confused it for Irish, and Richeh's English va is Australian. I think everyone having different accents is great for showing the diversity of the world. We can even hear that a lot of the witches from The Great Hall have British adjacent accents, a little hint that they came from the same place/area. Though I do agree that Agott's dub voice is too deep, making it a little harder to be sympathetic to her when she sounds so much older than she is. The Great Hall is the entirety of the undersea city, and is the hub of witch society, though there are other witch cities and villages. A lot of witches grow up there, including Qifrey and Alaria. About hat design, while a witch is an apprentice they wear essentially the "uniform" of the atelier they belong to, which is typically similar to their master's, but they get to design their own once they graduate, though they will typically take elements of their master's design into consideration (like keeping the colour scheme for themselves or their own apprentices). Qifrey's ribbon is not a symbol of status. Alaria is a shipper for sure, you've just got the wrong half of the ship. But he won't be here for a bit. "You never know what kids that age will get up to without adults around" 1) Qifrey knows exactly the kind of things they'd get up to, he was a menace. 2) They are meant to have another adult around, said adult is just working on other things. Qifrey was and is a problem child, he just got better at hiding it. Kidfrey was a lot more like Agott than I think even he wants to admit. He also really don't like The Great Hall, partially because he has an aversion to water in general, even though he specialises in water magic. It kind of a "know thy enemy" thing on that end. I will say this now: These girls are just kids. They are between 10 and 12. They are written to act like kids, because they are. Food is important in this series, not just for Richeh (girl can eat), but in general. So much so there's a spin off series, Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen, which even gives the recipes for all the food they make in it. I wouldn't recommend looking at it until at least the end of this season though. Agott is very much 'When I was 7 I had a crush on a girl in my class & didn't know how to deal with it so I wrote her a letter that just said "get out of my school".' Though I am an Arkco shipper and Agott is my favourite character so I may be biased (the "Ark" is from Agott's last name but the full thing is kinda a spoiler so that's all you're getting). I know last week you said that Coco and Agott seemed a bit like Homura and Madoka, but I would say they're more like Kyouka and Sayaka. Baby Agott did have long hair, though we don't know why she cut it, I have a theory, but there are spoilers there. Agott certainly has issues, and is projecting, but that is a season 2 problem. Brushbuddies are attracted to the scent of conjuring ink, so that's why he stays with Coco. Coco being an Outsider is actually an important part of why she's such a good witch, she thinks outside the box, or the ring as it were. We see this in this episode, with her using her history of tailoring and the bit of magic she does know in order to make her dream of a cloak of flight happen (even if it wasn't as she expected). Also a lot of the shots of Coco's mother (its been ten years, why doesn't she have a name?) were added in the anime, as was the trial and error of getting the diadem herb. Some may say its padding the time (since we got no ed this episode), but I think its really good character detail. Coco isn't perfect, she doesn't always get things first try, and she isn't fully immersed in the world of magic, she still has one foot in the world she came from. A lot of people judge her for being so excited and diving into the world of magic and seemingly not caring as much about her mother, but she's just a kid. The cloak animation is one of my favourite parts, not only as a cosplayer (I have watched that sequence so many times for patterning), but also because of how Bug Films does references. They had both the apprentice cloaks and Qifrey's robes made and worn by people so they could see how they move, a lot of in universe props so they can see how they are to scale, and Shirahama (writer and artist of the manga) draw out characters' bone structure. Brim Caps can hide their brims as a way to blend in with society at large. On Eye Mask Witch, he has a name, and he is a Brimmed Cap. I would describe most Brims as anarchists, though some are just people who want healing magic to be legal. As such, some Brims are closer to the Pointed Caps in their moral code, but most, including Eye Mask, are not good people. I would say while society is the main antagonist of the series, the Brims, and Eye Mask especially, are a very close second. Apologies for the length. Mods, please edit as needed, I tend to go on tangents.

Usually I'm immune to the "cute little critter" creatures that are introduced into shows, but Brushbuddy really got past all my defenses. I ADORE that little thing! You know, I can't blame anyone for NOT using the stairs to get to the seabed. Look how long of a way down that is!!! Of course people are taking the easy route!!! I think my favorite lines from this episode have to be Coco's "I'll take responsibility for what I've done!" and Qifrey's "Which is why I come here when I need things." For Coco, I just love when a character has accountability - even over an instance that was a genuine accident. She had no way of knowing that the spell she was drawing would do that! The argument I often see is "she should've stopped when she saw a complicated spell", but I can see why she continued. All the other spells seemed to be rather basic ones, at least with what we saw for sure (fireworks and a fireball). The fireball could've served as a warning to her, sure, but there is still a huge difference between a fireball and a Literal Crystal Imprisonment Spell. Do I think she should've sat back and considered it a bit more before tracing the spell? Yes. Do I see why she didn't? Also yes. She is an excited kid from a part of society that is purposefully kept in the dark about the nature of magic, and this is unfortunately the consequence of that. For Qifrey, I just love what I can personally imply from it. With the way Alaira talks about living in the Great Hall just for him to have that as the response, I can't help but think that this is a conversation he's had several times before. Depending on what kind of 'problem child' he was, I'm sure there were people who probably wanted him to stay in the Great Hall so that they could keep an eye on what he's up to. But having that as a whole response makes me think he's stopped trying to explain his reasoning on leaving and has instead just started saying that to shut down the conversation.

Plore

Heya! i love your comment but sadly enough i can't really show it to Romania as all the talk about, the great hall, the uniforms, the brushbuddies, and general character talks would all be concidered spoilers by romania, as these are all things she will want to figure out/experience helrself!

Right?! Brushbuddy’s fluid adorableness has broken my defenses as well! And yes, the stairs almost seem like an intentional torture that they’re hoping you’ll use magic to avoid! Yess, that is my favorite line from Coco in the episode for the reasons you broke down! And yes, my theory is the other Witches might be afraid Qifrey is not only too smart for his own good, but could defy the council’s sense of society eventually (even though right now, he’s pretty by the books with them), but I love that idea that it’s how he shuts down the conversation, now! So gooooood in the writing! Thank you for the comment and kind words! I cannot wait for episode 4!

Coco’s memories of her mother are so special – I don’t blame you for making that connection - it truly IS emotional, right?! And yes, Agott has a kind of “big sister” vibe with her and Coco so far. And hands are SO important!! I hurt my hand years ago and couldn’t use it for a tiny bit – still, that was so much harder than I realized it would be! Ahhh, that “Rite of Spring” video makes them look actually quite intimidating! Thanks for sharing that – I’ll have to add my little theories about Brushbuddy in the intro for Episode 4 when I get to it! 😀 Thank you for the comment and kind words!!

Bullying/hazing disguised as an initiation ritual and it being treated dead serious by both Coco and Agott feels like the most tween girl-core thing that’s happened in this show so far haha And I don’t think Agott’s gonna be scolded cuz I doubt Qifrey is ever going to know the full truth of how all this played out. Agott didn’t give Tetia or Richeh the entire story and I’m genuinely not sure Coco even realizes she was being outright bullied here? I could definitely be wrong about that last part though. Either way, I really like how much consideration you give Agott. I’ve seen a lot of reactors throwing so much vitriol her way it’s been giving me genuine pause here and there

romaniablack

Oh my gosh YES! The Mean Girls of it all! But yes, very tween-girl-core to be sure! That is a fair point about Qifrey not scolding her because of this incident -- it does make me wonder if she does something to an extreme that Qifrey DOES find out, but maybe they'll reconcile before then! But yeah, I can't hate either Agott or Coco because they're just complex teenage girls! They're sorting through their feelings! Thank you for the comment!

LoreleiS

Not me wanting to cry when she see her mom’s hand guiding her’s. Also did I imagine it or did her mom have something on her sleeve?

romaniablack

RIGHT?! Such a good moment! I assume it's a design on the sleeve -- I want to be surprised by the show, so we'll see where the series goes! But I did notice that but didn't think it's worth mentioning at the moment. Thanks for the comment.
