great reaction again! Cant wait for the next one(after the OVA if youre watching it) Also I think mods may not tell you when to watch the op until you see it for the first time. You can skip the op the first time it coems up and then they can tell you when you can watch it. This way you wouldnt know when an arc ends beforehand :D

Since the IF stories were mentioned, and you asked about spoilers in them, the answer to that question is a little bit funny Yes, there are spoilers in many of them, but the funny part is, since the IF routes are written by the actual re:zero author, there are many characters and interesting lore drops introduced first in these stories that took years to appear in the main rezero plot, so technically some IF routes have what can only be described as "spoilers in hindsight", which is a really funny concept to describe. The author REALLY loves writing side-content for re:zero, as well as being pretty active regarding answering Q&As, which leads to a lot of interesting concepts being introduced in side-content This also kind of translates to the anime adaptation of re:zero, with stuff like OVAs & breaktimes

Here I am trying to find something insightful to say and yet I can't, because your analysis was just that good. I didn't even notice the tidbit about Rem being anxious with the whole vase replacement parallel, and I've rewatched the show so many times already. So instead I'll just leave some notes about some fun facts. Rem & Ram, obviously a play on the trope of the blue oni and red oni. In this case it's inverted. Usually the red oni is hot-headed and emotional next to the cool and aloof blue oni, but as we've seen in this episode it's very much the other way around. I won't touch too much on their backstory since you already mentioned most of it. But one interesting note is that when Subaru was telling the oni story to Ram, Ram said, "If the Red Oni wanted to make friends with the humans, he should have just torn off his horn, before the blue oni couldn't stand it anymore." Which makes the whole thing even sadder: Ram was in some part happy that she lost her horn, because her own sister wouldn't feel so inferior any longer, and yet Rem's own careless thought only made Rem sink deeper into that complex. Next, about relationships. They seem to have both a sprinkle of wholesomeness and some toxicity. Case in point, Rem and Ram. Ram is a very supportive sister and always wanted Rem to be her own person. She managed to somewhat dissuade Rem's anxieties, but in that moment Rem only managed to find a sort of distorted acceptance, happy to live in her own sister's shadow. That unhealthy sort of acceptance blossomed into that stray thought on that fiery night. I'll just leave another quote: "A thought is a vine, and some thoughts nurture thorns that bleed the soul. An endless growth that blots your vision and strangles your trust." Next would be Roswaal and Ram, and I don't think I need to say why that whole thing seems very toxic, yet weirdly consensual. One thing to note is that oni absorb most of their mana through their horn, and since Ram has no horn, she can't really regenerate her mana naturally. Which is why Roswaal is doing all of that stuff. It's basically mana transfer. Also why Ram fainted after using too much magic in the forest. You could argue this makes the whole thing even worse, since Ram is dependent on Roswaal. There is something to note about how Subaru and Emilia's interactions, although wholesome, have an undercurrent of transactionality. Not intentional per se; they both feel they have to make it up to the other person if they are shown kindness. There is a lot more to say here, but that's a discussion for later. I was also so happy with the talk Rem has with Subaru. She has probably heard a lot of those things before from her own sister, but she needed to hear those words from someone not involved in it, someone who has no clue about all of that baggage. My favourite line has to be "I'm pretty sure you're the only one who cares if she has a horn or not," which is sooo true, often our own anxieties are born from these sorts of fabrications. On the other hand, "All you have to do is be the horn Ram doesn't have" rubs me a bit the wrong way; it feels like defining herself in terms of her sister. It's that sprinkle of wholesomeness and toxicity I was talking about.

Glad to see a new episode! It really brings back a flood of emotions to see these scenes again. I haven’t read the discussion threads yet, but I’m afraid I’ll forget some of the 【novel details】 that come to mind, so I’m leaving a comment before I watch. (Please note that the following contains some content from the novel. While it aligns with the anime, the details may differ slightly. Please be aware of this before reading.) I actually watched Seasons 1 and 2 of the anime first, then started reading the novel. The following is based on my memory and may not be entirely accurate. I remember that in the novel, the attitude of Rem and Ram’s parents actually wasn’t as warm and accepting as it is in the anime. In fact, the description gives the impression that they were very cold, especially toward Rem. As for Rem’s mental state—especially the part where she says, “I just need to follow my older sister”—I personally found it even more unsettling. For example, when the village was attacked and burned, Rem had just woken up. Her very first reaction upon realizing she was alone was, “I must go find my older sister immediately.” And when she realized the danger, her reaction wasn’t fear or fleeing, nor was it concern for her own safety or that of her family, nor was it a desire to figure out what was happening—instead, it was, “I must go rely on my older sister’s instructions”— —to me, personally, this is even objectively a somewhat “creepy” reaction. But it did help me better understand why Rem has such identity issues, and just how serious the situation really is.

@21:53. The "curse" thing they mentioned isn't an in universe thing. It's a reference to a famous anime, Castle in the Sky. In Castle in the Sky, "Balse" is the name of a magic spell there. I should note, that since Japanese's L/R is actually kinda in the middle, transliterations back to English tend to arbitrarily pick L or R (which leaves us with the wonderful Yu-Gi-Oh! Card, "Glow up Bulb", instead of the much more fitting "Grow up Bulb", since it's effect allows itself to be resurrected, and has 0 references to luminance of any kind). So "Balse" and "Barusu" are the exact same Japanese spelling. And it's impossible to keep both the Castle in the Sky reference (which decided to translate it as "Basle") and the it being an anagram of Subaru's name in English. It's really no big deal. — @1:10:08 One of the kids slipped him the bocco fruit when they were putting the bugs and shit in his pockets. They briefly showed it on screen with a cutaway (though it does go pretty fast, and it's kinda hard to tell it's a bocco fruit if you're not looking for it.).

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! Yes, this weekend coming up is the OVA #1 and then I'll be back to it with the DC EP 7. And no worries -- they have me down when I can watch the second OP! :D Thanks for helping to make sure I'm not spoiled and for the comment!

romaniablack

Ooohhhh, that is a good note on the reference to Castle in the Sky; thank you for noting that! That reference to Yu-Gi-Oh! was great -- Thank you for noting that! And ooohhhh, thank you for noting about the Bocco fruit! Nice! That's a great notice; I missed that! Thank you for the comment!

That's really funny about the drops in the IF stories that wouldn't show up until WAY later - I love that, honestly -- and ahh, at least the author is engaged in the story and with the fandom! Thank you for the comment and all of the information!

romaniablack

Thank you for the comment and the kind words – thanks for the information as well! I appreciate that! Especially with the differences with the novel vs. anime.

Ahhh, thank you so much for the kind words and I’m glad you enjoyed my rambles; this was a great episode set! I love that Ram and Rem are the Oni legend reversed! And ooohhhh, that part about the horn makes sense why Ram didn’t want Rem to know about that story because it would hit so close to home! I love all the notes on Rem and Ram – that’s great to point out in this! That vine quotation is great to go with them in this episode set. “Toxic, yet weirdly consensual” is a great description of Roswaal and Ram. But yeahhhhh, definitely creating a co-dependent relationship. Hm. AND YES - THANK YOU - There is a “transaction” quality to their relationship that makes me soooooo wary. I’m sure we’ll be discussing it as we get further into the season. But yes, Rem and Subaru’s talk was so great in this! It was a great scene – that’s interesting – I took that scene to mean that she’s moving beyond what she doesn’t have, but I can see how it could be a little toxic. Thanks for noting that and for the comment!

In The Wonderland Alisa

I finally have time to watch the discussion—hope it’s not too late, haha. This scene—the conversation between Subaru and Rem—was definitely one of the key reasons I really started to love RE:0 back then. Because surprisingly, it wasn’t the typical, self-centered, slogan-spouting “hero/savior”—“ the trapped/follower” or “the male protagonist” – “harem candidate” template—where the protagonist delivers a hollow, abstract concept-spouting speech, and the other person is inexplicably moved, somehow gets “better,” and is then “converted” by the protagonist. Instead, Subaru—as an imperfect person—genuinely and earnestly paid attention to and listened to every emotion and thought of Rem, who was also imperfect. He responded in a gentle yet firm manner, firm yet non-judgmental, and with great attention to detail. Moreover, his approach was very realistic, truly closely mirroring how one would appropriately handle such a situation in real life. At the same time, he’s aware of his own position and respects the other person’s individuality—just as you mentioned, he doesn’t just start off, like many typical protagonists, by assuming an omniscient position, instead of just being another random person in other people's lives, offering condescending instructions from above. Instead, he acknowledges that he doesn’t know everything and shouldn’t pry into everything—and he treats Ram the same way. By the way, I also found your thoughts on Roswaal really interesting! I think I’d been struggling to find the right words to capture that subtle feeling before, but when I heard your description, I had that “Oh!!” moment! The suspense in this episode has definitely made him more and more intriguing! Anyway, looking forward to your next reaction!

Another wonderful reaction! I totally agree with your discussion on Subaru's relationship with his femininity. It's super interesting how he seems to be drawn to and have a natural calling to a lot of traditionally thought of feminine skills. And yet, he struggles with these pre-conceived assumptions on what a man is and feels he has to live up to that. Like, my guy, did you not hear your own advice you gave to Rem? You don't need to live up to some sort of image or standard. You are great just the way you are 😤 On that note, I really love how this episode shows how similar Subaru and Rem are. They both feel the need to live up to some preconceived image of themselves and overcompensate for their insecurities when they don't reach that. I also find Ram a really interesting character. I love how we never once see her caring about the villagers seeing her as a prodigy. Instead, her care and focus is always on Rem. And, this is just my interpretation, but I feel like Ram was also affected by the treatment of the villagers. She always was trying to bridge the gap and lessen the tension between her and Rem. Even in the present, we see she's aware, if not hypervigilent when it comes to Rem's trauma. Like how she warned Subaru not to mention the oni story and loss of horn. A small detail that leads to a great moment between the sisters is that Rem calls Ram "onee-chan" which is translated as "sissy." But after Ram's horn gets cut off, Rem starts to call her "onee-sama" which is translated as "sister." I feel like this change in language really shows how their relationship was damaged that night. However, when Subaru goes to fight the mabeast on his own, and Rem is begging Ram not to leave him. She pleads with her and calls her "onee-chan" for the first time since that night. This causes Ram to fall down and drop her. It's not explained what was going through Ram's head in that moment, but I love the interpretation that her sister reclaiming the name she used before the trauma between made her fall, not because she was exhausted or anything similar to that. But anyhow, thank you for the reaction! Thank you to the mods too. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend 💛

No, it’s never too late for a comment! 😀 I really love the conversation with Subaru and Rem! It was very genuine between the two of them. Great notes on Subaru’s attitude throughout Rem’s spiel. I’m SO fascinated to learn more with Roswaal, and I can’t wait to see where the series goes! Thank you SO much for the detailed comment and sharing your thoughts on a great scene in this series!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I really am fascinated by Subaru and his connection to femininity! There is such an intriguing push and pull there! Yep, our boy isn’t practicing what he’s preaching, but maybe he’ll get there someday! And yeah, Rem and Subaru are very similar! Rem is so layered, too; I like how that is explored this episode as well. I agree that the villagers had an impact on her agency and perception of herself as well. Ooohh, that’s interesting about the maturity difference in her title for her sister in the show! Nice! That’s so cool to point out! ESPECIALLY when it reverts back to before in the moment! Niceeeee observation! Thank you so much for the kind words - yes, the mods are so good - Thank you for the comment and have a wonderful weekend, too!
