You absolutely should read the book! I have the audio book and it’s fantastic! I’ve read all Andy Weir’s books. I read this when it was first published. This movie is a very good adaptation of the book. It has all the heart and some science. The book has the rest of the science and other things! I won’t spoil you! The Martian is also very good. On that one, I preferred the book. This one, I prefer the movie because Rocky is adorable. As an Adrian, I’m always surprised to hear my name in movies. And yes, I love Rocky! ( don’t tell Husband!🤫. Although, I think he knows!) This has got to be my favorite movie this year, I still cry every time! This is also one of the warmest Sci Fi movies out there. The sweater, the good luck quilt, children’s art and the lighting. The ship, Mary, is a very cozy home in the deepest of space. Yes, the knitters have been going crazy for that sweater! The kit: https://www.marymaxim.com/products/wolf-cardigan-project-hail-mary The vintage pattern I knitted!😅 https://www.marymaxim.com/products/wolf-cardigan-pattern-32089?variant=39393214496935 What a character arc Grace goes on! There is a lot to unpack with this movie, loss of memory, loss of home and people, confidence … and finding all of that again. It’s very relatable. My dad was an aeronautical engineer who quite and became a high school science teacher. Go figure. 🤷‍♀️ So we have to visit him for Thanksgiving. I have to get on a plane. I am deathly afraid of flying. Husband always says, if the plane crashes, at least we will die together. That is not reassuring!!1 My dad is like it’s perfectly safe. Riding in a car is bumpier, he says…. But a car is on the ground! I will be watching this movie on the way there. I’ll be brave for Rocky. 😭 There is a romance in the movie. Many people have picked up even if it is plutonic. Now if you want a ship…… may I introduce you to Bloody Mary…. I’ll let you google it. Yes, I did the Bloody - Mary - athon. That is the movies Iron Lung and Project Hail Mary back to back. And yes Markaplier is aware of the ship. The overall fandom of PHM has really taken off. I’ve seen some interesting things out there. You will be probably inundated with factoids about the story so beware if you’re going to read the book. I love the way language was handled in this movie. I don’t speak Chinese and it is a totally different root language from English. I tend to understand a lot of conversations around me from context. Rocky does this too and understands in other ways too… There are videos that explain Rocky’s biology that are very detailed. Lots of videos on the making of the movie as well that are fun to watch. Of course do so after the book. I do hope this gets nominated for all the awards as well and the practical effects look fantastic! I hope they make more of a comeback in film. I enjoyed your reaction very very much! I may have to watch for a second time! 🦊🪨

Written before reaction (I was in the middle of watching Star Trek the OG series for the first time and doing math a perfect break) I enjoyed this movie so much I got the audio book! Thank you to my bff for “acquiring” the movie and sharing it with me. I hope you’ll read it to there’s quite a bit that didn’t make the cut. First American novel I’ve read in a while. Also someone pointed out there’s a quote not from the book but I believe the Bible “Hail Mary full of Grace”. Maybe the mc got his name from there I don’t know I don’t think the author has came out and confirmed it but I thought it was fun. I love Grace! He’s such a fun character! He’s commonly headcanoned as aroace but he does also have his ships Rocky/grace (A little homewrecking as a treat/but also people love them queer platonically), Grace/Rocky/Adrian (Rocky and Adrian have six hands and Grace has two), and Grace/A character from another property(unnamed because maybe you’ll watch it someday), Grace/Carl (they made a baby) and Grace/Stratt(I saw a video where Stratt occasionally gets dead wife flashbacks I’ll post it in discord). This movie mostly used puppets and Rocky’s main puppeteer is his voice actor! People like to use his likeness in human AUs sometimes. Most of the effects and sets were built instead of CGI. Which we love to see! Reactions as I watched your reaction Since Rocky’s atmosphere is mostly made of ammonia which smells like cat pee. That’s why Grace gagged when opening blip-c (the jar). During the scene where Grace is unconscious/knocked out you can hear Rocky saying Grace’s name in his language 🫠. I can’t tell you how many times I was brought to tears. I love the parallels in this film example the two times Grace asked for time to think about a major decision. One person gave him a time limit, and the other told him to take as much time as he needed granted the stakes were different but still. After movie Don’t worry everything you thought you would go wrong has been written about via fanfic. There’s a time travel one where Rocky and Grace die in space after the taomeba eat all their fuel… but don’t worry they go back in time with their memories in tact. I believe Ryan and Ortiz became quick friends during filming. I think Ryan got Ortiz a film set item. And Ortiz was dazzled by Ryan. I strongly agree I like the human element of sci-fi. As I’m watching Star Trek for the first time I’ve found I do not care for the science of it all but I love the characters. I love the humanity on display even if some things are a little dated. Love’d the reaction and your rapid fire thoughts!

Omg I got so excited when I saw you would be watching this movie! It’s quickly become one of my favorites, which I’m sure is no surprise! My boyfriend had read the book so the movie was on his radar which lead to us seeing it in theaters, which I’m so glad we did! The big screen made it truly dazzling! I absolutely agree with you about the use of practical effects here. They really pay off if you want the movie to look great and stand up to the test of time (just look at Jurassic Park) It just wouldn’t have been the same if they did Rocky all in CG! I would definitely recommend the book if you have time for it! I haven’t made it all the way through my read yet, but I already appreciate the additional details about Grace’s life on earth and on Rocky and Eridian culture. I really appreciate how ultimately hopeful this movie is. It has plenty of drama and angst of course, but it’s also so uplifting. Sometimes the day really can be saved by the power of friendship! And that’s beautiful! Power of friendship/connection being so central is probably part of the reason why it’s popular to headcanon Grace as Ace, Aro, or AroAce. As a fellow Ace, I can definitely see it, especially after reading some parts of the book. As much as I love shipping, it’s also nice to have stories that don’t feel they NEED to include a canon romance, you know? So glad you enjoyed the movie! I hope it will continue to bring you happiness as you explore the book and fandom!

Loved the reaction and discussion! Statement! 🥹👎 Now beyond the fact that this film is an amazing experience, the reason I decided to go with this commission was to again set myself a challenge of finding a fine pairing for last August’s film. So I needed something where... an unlikely pair is learning to work towards a common goal… As One. 🤭 Now who had an easier time of it, I wonder?! 🤣 (I am delighting an audience of one here - me. 🤣) I had initially planned to see this in the cinema, but a friend of mine saw it before me and recommended I wait. She was totally right! Because the first time I watched this, I swear, for about 2h of the runtime I was just a sentient puddle of tears on my couch. 🤣 I don’t mind some tears in the cinema, but that would have been ridiculous, I had a much better time without worrying about disturbing other cinemagoers. 😅 I do really look forward to seeing it on a proper IMAX screen in the future. I won’t go on and on about how absolutely stunning the film is. 🥰 Various moments I loved: Everything being so masterfully crafted: from the hilarious editing to the beautiful OST to the puppetry to the sets to the gradual reveals, etcetc. I adore it all and will keep this to one sentence. 🥰 Grace really gave me Vash vibes, especially with the charming clumsiness. “He’s Kenough for this trip.” 😆 Rocky’s most adorable giggle! 🥰 The consistent “Stop it, movie! Don’t you dare!” 🤣 – that was my first experience, too! I was in a constant emotional fight with this movie and it won every round! 🤣 Only 1h needed to start shipping a man with a rock! “Grumpy. Angry. Stupid.” 🤣 That delightful ‘thunk’ every time Rocky pressed up against the glass. 🥹 The moment of Grace erasing the “Who am I?” off his whiteboard-kun to do the maths to get to Rocky. 😭 (NB: I would die for Rocky and I would kill for Rocky!) The motif of the clap and it being the final moment in the film, because every time prior it was in moments where Grace knew he’d gotten it right. 🥰 I think the moment that the film got its hooks into my soul was the space funeral, where Grace doesn’t even seem capable of uttering the words ‘die in vain’ or anything of the sort, as though he does not want to wish it into existence in front of Yao and Ilyukhina’s bodies. On this rewatch, this really reminded me of Asa in episode 1 of Journal with Witch, and the scene where she makes the first attempt to write in her journal and can only go: “And that’s because…” Now, themes of resistance?! 😆 An abundance. But most of all I wanted to note specifically what you described in the discussion, the way it subverted your expectations – to me this film is a joy because of its resistance to conventional sci-fi narratives. Sci-fi is my favourite genre (if I had to choose one), and this was such a breath of fresh air for me! Yes, space is bleak and unforgiving, but enough! I get it! And even when there is some form of extraterrestrial life and even when there’s cooperation and camaraderie, endings are often similar to what you described. To me there is also so often an inherent ‘human-supremacy’ to a lot of works: sometimes very subtle, and there’s still kindness, but still a kind of ultimate conclusion that surely, absolutely and “naturally” a human will choose their own kind in the end. So the fact that Grace chose his home to be with Rocky is Absolutely Everything to me. 😭 They built him a whole biodome! Are you kidding me, movie! 😭 Can some Eridians adopt me, too, please? I was so pleased to hear that you went into this completely blind because I know a bunch of trailers spoiled Rocky. There are rumours that the first cut of the film was about 4h long and I hope they will release a special edition at some point in the future. Most of all, thank you for letting this amazing film take you on its journey! This was so much fun and will absolutely go on my comfort reaction rotation. Happy-happy-happy! 🥰 Looking forward to everything coming up in September! 💙

Thank you SO MUCH for the comment and kind words! I am absolutely head over heels for this movie! I definitely want to check out the book, now! And yessss, practical effects are much more timeless than CG. And YES, lots of angst, but I love the hopefulness at the end of the movie with the ending! And yes, FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC! I could see Grace as AeroAce - and as someone on that spectrum, I connected with him and Rocky's relationship so much! And hey, shipping to me (anyway) means love -- even if it's platonic, soulmates, romantic, sexual, etc. Thank you so much! The discord is FEEDING Me with all the fandom works - ugh, I love it! <3

My coworker said the audio book is amazing – I am not usually an audio book, but I definitely want to check out either one! But thank you for not spoiling - I definitely want to check it out – but ahhhh, Rocky is so cute! Ortiz does SUCH a good job with him; I want him to be nominated for supporting actor for sure! That is awesome you’re an Adrian! I love all the AU where Adrian is this gorgeous giant jade rock and Rocky is this little guy! :3 Definitely SUCH a warm sci-fi movie – with such hope in it! I love that pattern - I am so glad you’re knitting your own cardigan! It’s so iconic! Grace’s arc as a character is so so so good! WOW – your dad as an aeronautical engineer?! WOW! That’s incredible and that his journey is similar to Grace’s (Pre-PHM). And ahhh, I feel that fear for flying, but I’m glad your dad has that view of it. Yes, channel Rocky for inspiration! I am not googling Bloody Mary, because I don’t want any spoilers for other movies, sorry! What if it’s commissioned? Can’t take chances. And yes, there is definitely love in this movie, even if it is platonic. And yeah, language is so interesting in this movie in how it’s explored! But thank you for the comment and kind words - this is definitely one of my favorite movies this year and I hope it gets all the awards! Rocky and Grace deserve it!

My coworker says the audio book is fantastic, so I might have to listen to it! And yes, the biblical symbolism is there! I love Grace and Rocky so much, though! And seriously, AROGRACE is a thing! But I do love Rocky x Grace ships, platonic or otherwise! But yeah, there are a lot of other ship potentials in this film! Ahhh, that makes sense with the Jar scene! Ahahaha, I love that the fan fiction community is there to give us angst and trauma when needed. And that’s great watching Star Trek as you’re talking about this movie! The humanity and love on display is so great in both series – thank you for the comment and kind words!

Ahhhhh, I cannot believe this has been on my patreon for a MONTH and I haven’t answered it - all the apologies!! Thank you for the commission – SERIOUSLY – WHAT A FILM! This movie was SO moving, I don’t blame the tears! I’m glad I also waited to be able to see this as a reaction! I honestly NEED the deluxe edition of the book when it comes out this winter. It’s so stunning and masterfully crafted, indeed. Grace SO has Vash vibes!! Ahhh!!! The comparison! *tears up* Rocky won me over - why am I being wooed by a damn rock?! This movie went to BATTLE with one’s emotions! And seriously – me shipping man and rock – why are we surprised?! And Grace erases his worries over who he is to protect his soulmate – UGH. I really think Grace’s reaction to the crew and the funeral are really human. And oooh, connecting to Journal with Witch – yesssss, what a time to be seeing both simultaneously! So many themes of resistance! And yay to subverting expectations! I was really heartbroken because I talked with my brother and he just shrugged and was like, “It’s not realistic for him not to attack the space alien first and I was like, “HaVe YoU eVeN wAtChEd ThE mOvIe—” He actually had not; he’d just seen clips, but I was heartbroken. Also, uhm, YES, I would be here for Eridians to adopt me as well! Ooohhhhh give us the Extended Cut like LOTR, please! But yes, I was SO happy I went in blind to this!! This movie was an absolute RIDE in the best way - thank you so much for commissioning it and I can’t wait to continue my ride in the fandom! <3
