You know what they say: you subconsciously emulate those you love. And boy, IS HE!!!! Currently, Shen Qiao is emulating both Qi Fengge and Yan Wushi. The two loves of his life, respectively familial and romantic. It's so funny to me that Shen Qiao thinks that's a normal way to see "an old friend". Sir, you are in lovvvveeee!!! You can't no-homo your way out of this, master user of gay pride rainbows stretching across the heavens!! Yan Wushi needs to stop leaving Shen Qiao by himself, because Shen Qiao CANNOT be held accountable for the number of adopted children that will eventually be Yan Wushi's competition for Shen Qiao's affection. He hasn't even met the newly-adopted Shiwu yet, and now he has to prepare to meet another one?! When he just BARELY won against Xie Ling by "killing" him?! The outrage! Yan Wushi's daddy milkers are about to be put to use, but not in the way that he wishes. 🤣 Your comment about how Yuwen Xian's stubborn honor and familial sentimentality reminds you of Shen Qiao got me thinking— this entire Chang'an section has basically been a kaleidoscope of Shen Qiao's past experiences! I'll try to list it out chronologically. 1) Shen Qiao's fall: Yuwen Xian values honor, righteousness, loyalty, and family— all traits that Sect Leader Shen Qiao had. Just like Yu Ai took advantage of those traits to poison Shen Qiao and oust him from his position, Yuwen Yun and Murong Qin were able to kill Yuwen Xian by exploiting those traits. 2) Chuyun Temple: Shen Qiao, who was at his weakest and lowest point in life at Chuyun Temple, is now at his peak in Chang'an. He's able to intimidate and fend off Murong Qin and his entourage, who could've crushed him back at the temple. The reading of the Zhuyang Strategy scroll at Chuyun Temple kickstarted Shen Qiao's slow recovery and Chen Gong's eventual martial success. Chen Gong himself mirrors Shen Qiao's progress. He was also at his weakest and lowest point in life at Chuyun Temple, and now at his strongest in Chang'an. Shen Qiao and Chen Gong have their own yin and yang dynamic. Before Mu Tipo's appearance, Chen Gong was battling between his selfishness and his potential to be kind; the current Shen Qiao and Chen Gong are a direct portrayal of Chen Gong's previous inner struggle. The current Shen Qiao shows the path that Chen Gong might have taken if the latter had prevailed. The current Chen Gong is what came to be when the former won out. 3) Experiencing the bonds of family in the face of crisis and the vicious cycle of survival: Yuwen Xian, who deeply and openly loves his family, is a direct opposite of Shiwu's father, who fed himself before reluctantly sharing the food Shen Qiao gave him with his wife and children, and then later sold his family off to be eaten. Yuwen Xian sacrificed himself to protect his family, but Shiwu's father sacrificed his family to protect himself. Shiwu's father showed Shen Qiao the cruel realities of the common people suffering from the decisions of those of higher authority (kingdom of Qi), while Yuwen Xian's case showed him exactly how that cycle begins (kingdom of Zhou). 3) Su Residence: In the same place that Shen Qiao met the Su family and Puliuru Jian and restored his reputation from Yan Wushi's boy toy to skilled martial artist and Qi Fengge's disciple, Shen Qiao saves and aids them once again. In doing so, he boosts his reputation as a grandmaster who has surpassed Qi Fengge. Chang'an, the Su family, and Puliuru Jian seem to be the catalysts to the evolution of Shen Qiao's reputation. 4) Killing Sang Jingxing's favorite: Though Shen Qiao has only met Baoyun twice and doesn't have any deep, personal grudges against him, Baoyun fulfills Huo Xijing's role in this instance. Like Huo Xijing, Baoyun is notorious for terrorizing the people and being one of Sang Jingxing's favorites. Killing Huo Xijing is what brought Shen Qiao to Sang Jingxing's attention. Perhaps killing Baoyun is foreshadowing Sang Jingxing's reappearance in front of Shen Qiao? 5) Bailong Monastery: Once again, Shen Qiao is faced with the task of protecting a child by (or on) his person. Meanwhile, like the abbott, Yan Ying uses his life to protect Yuwen Song, buys time for him to run, and trusts Shen Qiao to protect him after he dies. Again, Yan Shou sets out to murder mere children in his desire to kill Shen Qiao. But, this time, Shen Qiao isn't weakened and hiding, and is able to meet them head-on and succeed in protecting both children. Honestly, I've only read Thousand Autumns once. Very soon after the novel was finally fully translated, the fan translators respectfully took it down, because it got licensed. So, I never had the chance to re-read and soak in all the details I missed the first time around. I remember most of the major events in the manner of their conclusion, but I had forgotten most of the finer details. So, even though I've already read this once, most of the time, I'm still surprised by the turn of events! Your readings and discussions bring SO MUCH to my brain and makes me think things I never even considered before. I was never this yappy back when I was in the fandom, but here I am with a full essay on your reactions. 😂

Chen Gong: They’re a couple of random, unrelated kids, just leave them to die! CG, buddy, that’s exactly what you were to SQ when you guys first met. Considering how much he tried to help you, do you really think he won’t do the same for these kids now?! Excellent analysis as always! I eagerly look forward to the next volume!

Yessss, I love that note of SQ emulating both Qi Fengge and Yan Wushi! And yes, he’s IN LOVE! Seriously, YWS needs to realize SQ is going to have an entire orphanage to himself to cope with YWS being gone hahaha – He’s getting a whole team assembled. “YAN WUSHI’S DADDY MILKERS ARE ABOUT TO BE PUT TO USE” oh my god, I read that right. Bless. That is amazing. And ooohhhh, that’s so neat about the kaleidoscope of SQ’s experiences through this Chang’an section! Nice! I’m so glad you detailed it! These are all so great to see listed out! Thank you for taking the time to do that! I cannot wait to see where the story goes, but seeing so much come full circle in this final set of Volume 3 chapters was so fantastic to witness and connect together! Thank you so much for the comment and I’m glad that this re-read has opened up these details! I’m so glad my rambles help to connect things, even If I didn’t realize it! 😀YAY! And as an English teacher, I’m always up for a full essay of comments! 😀Many thanks!

I'm so happy to finally have the time to sit down and read more with you! Work has been so busy lately,,, but I'm here!! 😭 And ahhhh, thank you for featuring my comment! Experiencing just how unwavering Shen Qiao is... I remember reading this series for the first time, and like you, I just kept reading faster and faster. I also can't help but love whenever Chen Gong arrives on the scene; his interactions with Shen Qiao are just too good. Regarding Shen Qiao calling Yan Wushi his friend - in chapter eighty, the narration makes a point of saying that despite all the terrible things he's experienced, the good more than makes up for it all - that 'any anger or hatred dissipated like smoke, leaving no trace behind'. This comes immediately after Yan Wushi's sacrifice. Shen Qiao is so moved that he's brought to tears. Maybe it feels like catching a glimpse of that man he'd called a friend before, back in the monastery? Except now, Shen Qiao's eyes are clear; he sees all of Yan Wushi, good and bad. Despite himself and all the lessons he's learned, that Yan Wushi has taught him about not trusting him... Shen Qiao can't help but have faith. In the end, Yan Wushi is Yan Wushi, and Shen Qiao is Shen Qiao. I loved listening to your thoughts on the end of volume three! I'm so so excited for volume four!! Ahhhhh! 🥳

Rhast

Shen Qiao is out here collecting children like Pokemon cards. Yan Wushi, you're gonna have so many kiddos. Bian Yanmei will help. Sometimes I hate Chen Gong more than Sang Jingxing. At least SJX doesnt pretend to be nice.

Hahahaha!! Shen Qiao building an orphanage out here -- seriously, Yan Wushi is going to need to have his disciples take on full babysitting jobs if he wants any time alone with Shen Qiao! Hahaha! Thank you for the comment!

Yay! I’m glad you’re catching up! 😀Huzzah!! Shen Qiao is such a force! And yes, I kept wanting to read faster and faster to see what would happen next! Chen Gong and Shen Qiao’s interactions are SO GOOD - there’s so much history between them and it’s gone in places I could not have expected with each of them. Yessss, that paragraph about Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi – ugh, I just adore it! These two men being themselves but finding that faith in each other and finding a glimmering hope – it’s so good! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I ADORED Volume 3 and I cannot WAIT to dive into Volume 4! 😀
