*LEFT IN HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I didn't think anything could top last week's episode, but now, here I am -- an hour and a half of discussion and nearly sobbing 5 times later...woooohhh...this series does NOT let up off the gas in terms of character development or its themes. What a masterful episode delving into a character I've been DESPERATE for more about -- ask and you shall receive!

Asa is a little blind to Emiri's situation , however she is a 15 year old going through extreme trauma . I think it's less about her being insensitive and more that her whole mental bandwith is dedicated to the loss of her parents. She hasn't fully processed it yet, so most other things are still a blur to her brain. It's self preservation not tone deafness. Peak Asa would have caught on, despite her mother's more "traditional" upbringing

I wanted to shake Asa and make her wake up in this episode

Loved the reaction and discussion! One amazing episode right after another! 🥰 Various things I loved: Rocky’s language-quirks already entering your lexicon – Amaze! Amaze! Amaze! I can't help it either. 😆 Kasamachi saying that Tono has “got this cool vibe going on” - is this cool vibe in the room with us right now? 😆 And yes, Kasamachi being such a happy little gossip is a lot of fun. The show waiting until episode 7 to “reveal” that Asa’s parents were unmarried was such great restraint (it is already strongly implied in the first episode and you’d theorised about that back then already!) Also, I love the tiny detail that the last time (in my reaction viewing) that you brought up that exercise with the two books was for a series right before this – Wind Breaker! Neither are a surprise considering the depth in the ways they present emotionality. 🥰 I really loved that scene with Kasamachi and Daigo because it is another great example of something you’d noted in previous eps, people resolving something and communicating about something they’d both perceived so differently. e.g. Kasamachi kind of had held onto the idea that Daigo didn’t like him and thought she wouldn’t be happy with him being “around” again potentially, and Daigo sort of assumed he wouldn’t help her because of what had happened before. And none of those things were presented as explosive in any way, no one trying to claim they were actually correct or making excuses for why they thought something, etc. And it works so well to also show the kinds of people Makio surrounds herself with vs Minori and her “friends.” Yep, that whole “graduating” concept as though marriage is the actual point of maturity and until then any person is essentially underdeveloped? Ugh. I appreciated the way you addressed all those heteronormative judgements in the discussion, I won’t rant further about it. 🫶 Loved your discussion of Michiko! It is helping me bit by bit 😅 (I found her profoundly aggravating on first watch and am coming around a bit), but I personally still have a tough time with her. Like her tiny question: “You forget things?” still to me reads like it comes from such a place of judgement and is so absurd. Wow, yes, a human being may forget something, more news at 11. But the creators, I think, present this so well to link into examples of specifically “the mothers” judging everyone around them later in the episode. And at the same time this makes Michiko even more of a problem to me, when she says that Minori was “pretty hard on herself”– so blind to most likely her own contribution. And her actually saying out loud that maybe Asa is “sharing too much” and then wondering if maybe that IS helping Asa… So close, yet so far, Michiko! For someone so supposedly socially “proper,” she really needs to work on her filter. /endrant 😅 Such a rich and dense discussion this episode! Thank you so much. 🥰Looking forward to the next episode! 💙 (Rule of 8! Rule of 8! 🥳)

I definitely feel that!! That's for sure! Thank you for the comment - glad I wasn't the only one!

Oh yeah, I get that - but I think two things can be true at once -- I think she can be going through some extreme trauma, but also, that doesn't give her an "excuse" to be so flippant and negative about the possibility of Emiri being gay. She did not look "in shock" or "thrown off" by what Emiri said in that moment. Hopefully, she rectifies this in the future, because Emiri is owed that, but we shall see #nospoilershintsorcluesplease Thanks for the comment!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! This series is just amazing episode after amazing episode! I love it! And YESSSS, I had finished Project Hail Mary before watching this and I was inspired! Hahaha!! Kasamichi’s jealousy of Tono FLOORS me – SIR, you are perfect. What. Don’t be jealous of him! I just love how in love he is and wants to share it with someone, and Daigo is the best person for it! And all of that with Kasamichi and what he had to deal with and how Daigo helps him through it, similar to Makio – just such a good scene!! Makio has a lot of good friends (which is such a contrast to Minori…ahem). Yeah, it’s great to have things confirmed in this episode! And ahhh, I miss Wind Breaker so much! Hahaha, I could get on a soap box about the “graduation through marriage” business but yeah, glad it’s appreciated in here! *puts soap box away* I think Michiko and Minori are SO interesting! I do think that Michiko is judgmental, for sure, but she seems “open” to learning new insights from people. She’s not as closed off as I’ve seen people to that sort of thing in real life. But oh yeah, for someone so socially proper, she still has a long way to go! So much to discuss – definitely a dense episode! But thank you for the comment and kind words! I’m excited for THE RULE OF 8!!! YES!!!
