Loved the reaction and discussion! I felt this one fit October very well + continued the Koreeda journey. 🥰 Have to say, I debated internally for weeks whether to commission this as ‘Wonderful Life’ or its (honestly much more widely used) Western title ‘After Life.’ 😅 I still feel Wonderful Life is a better gateway to the film and I feel much more indicative of Koreeda’s intent rather than the more plot-literal alternative. I saw this film in my very early teens, certainly when I was much too young for all the intricacies of it, but it left such a huge impact on me. My grandpa was part of a VHS bootleg film club of some kind and the various members from various countries would send each films from all over the world. So when I lived with him, I grew up on a steady diet of Godzilla films, samurai films and random arthouse stuff from all over that grandpa couldn’t escape because of their club rules! 😂 I had experienced a significant loss in my family shortly before and this film helped me more at the time than anything else, I’d say. And the way it is so full of empathy and kindness for all of its subjects I think can be felt in every frame. I don’t think I’d call it an absolute favourite, but I know for a fact that if by some divine order I was forced to choose only one film to ever show anyone else again, it would be this one. I think it has immense power to bring comfort and understanding. Various moments I loved: Loved, loved all the initial speculation of what could be going on! “Is it like a veteran’s service” – yeah, kinda! Veterans from life. 😂 How carefully all the interviews were conducted “Happy hump day, ghosts!” 😂 The way the film used the lantern/street lamp or single sources of light The old lady who didn’t give a fuck about anything than some pretty leaves, flowers and cherry blossoms is my icon! 🥰🌸 The level of detail they needed from characters describing their memories but also the way movie magic seamlessly fixed things. Iseya does have a Spike feel to him, agreed! “I was part of someone else’s happiness. What a wonderful discovery.” What A Line! 🥹 Those two old codgers and their “shogi” 😂 Really loved your discussion about hindsight! On this rewatch noticed this even more with how many memories from an external perspective I’d call close to traumatic but the characters themselves considered them comforting because of other elements (e.g. yes there was an earthquake and people thought there was an attack, but it was also everyone together). Now, themes of resistance?! 😆 Aplenty! Maybe the most primordial examples of resistance against the erasure of the self. Also, resistance against what society tries to tell us ‘matters’ and what actually feels like a comfort at the end. Most of all, I loved the presentation of resistance against ‘performing’ happiness for the benefit of others. I think there are two amazing examples. First, the young girl Kana who had initially recalled a Disneyland trip, as though performing gratitude and excitement in death was something she felt she had to do, rather than choosing even a memory of a simple comfort (I wonder what happened to her, I don’t think we know, but I perceive it as this idea that she felt the need to say ‘my life was happy, I had friends, we went on trips, my parents let me go to Disneyland, everything was fine and happy and normal’ where the reality was probably very different). Second, the old man Shoda going on and on about sex: it worked out so well to have Journal with Witch episode 12 the day before this released since we talked about all of those elements of performative masculinity there. And I loved that in the film it was just a subtle throughline, and we just get the ‘civil servant angels’ remarking on the pattern of men like that feeling the need to perform 'virility' in front of women and then in the end choosing a gentler memory. I loved seeing everyone’s journey through choosing their one memory. And the way everyone came in with their own preconceived notions, a lot of people started off assuming they needed to choose kind of “spectacular” memories: THE happiest, THE most moving, THE most vivid. And that later they simply choose small moments of comfort and peace. It is something that I wish for everyone - that everyone has a memory like that they could turn back to. 🥹 Pro-tip: maybe it should involve a bench. 😆 Thank you so much for letting this beautiful film take you on its journey and the beautiful discussion! 🫶 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Yeah, that was one of the reasons I had to double-check, but this ended up being a FANTASTIC movie, so I highly recommend it! Thank you for the comment!

The Apothecary dances with hemlock in the moonlight

I'll put it on the list. If you haven't seen it's a wonderful life I'd recommend that as well. One of the best Christmas movies (it makes be a tie between it and Tokyo Godfathers although I do find it funny how Japan made such a faithful Christmas film)

Thank you for the comment and kind words! This was PERFECT for this month!! I am really glad you commissioned as Wonderful Life – it was a PERFECT reveal for me with the plot! So, great choice! My grandfather video taped EVERYTHING - my family didn’t have enough money for cable when I was younger, so my grandpa would record movies and tv shows on VHS and send them to us. 😀So that’s awesome about your grandpa, too! I could so see how this film would be so helpful and cathartic in dealing with loss; I love it for that. VETERANS FROM LIFE. I love that park bench and lamp light as symbolism in this. I loved that older cherry blossoms lady! *shakes hands about Iseya being like Spike* Ahhh….that line about the “discovery” and the reveal of Iseya’s “memory” he chose! Thank you for the kind words and the comment - so much resistance and introspection with this one! And yesss, keeping oneself! I agree with all your thoughts on these themes. I love that idea of choosing what we love vs. what society expects us to love. And wow, yes, the connection to Journal with Witch and this show could not have been more perfectly timed! One of the most powerful moments to me is still the man that did “bad” his whole life and had the realization that he will still get to choose one happy memory and “forget all the rest.” Showing that connection to inner humanity despite wicked deeds done was powerful to me. And yes, it would be really hard for me to choose that one memory that I’d want to relive the most. Hm. I’d have to really think about that. But thank you for the comment and kind words! I really am so happy that I was able to watch this film, so thank you for the commission!
