I expected this to be a point of contention when you reached these episodes, haha. "With a face like that" doesn't mean that it's because she's a woman, or too pretty. It means that the expression on her face when she wielded the sword was very much not a pleasant one. That's why her face is not shown when she says that "protecting... sounds nice to me too", at that moment she gives up on her nice flower-gazing, flirting-with-Wilhelm-and-doing-whatever-else life to fully surrender to what her role forces on her. And that's why Wilhelm says "don't underestimate the beauty of a steel sword, Theresia van Astrea!", and vows to take the sword from her. I don't think he's projecting at all, personally. Would it have been nice to recieve those feelings of disliking the sword straight from Theresia? Yes, of course. But since this is a flashback from Wilhelm's point of view, I never expected to dive as deep as one would want into her internal characteristics. I think that a very very powerful woman who is just... not comfortable using that power is just as, if not at times a more interesting character type than a powerful woman who likes both classically masculine and feminine things. (Not saying that you necessarily disagree, just throwing the dichotomy out there) I think that beyond the very first line where he asks "why is a woman out here at this time?", that it was never about her being a woman, or gender in general. Oh and of course, Mimi rocks! Great reaction and discussion, as always. Even if I disagree with you on some things! Edit: I'll just explain further that my interpretation is based off believing older Wilhelm's assertion in the previous episode that Theresia "did not wish to wield the sword, but the sword loved her more than anyone else. With no choice but to live for the sword, she accepted her fate".

James Long

I had a similar reaction to the Theresia/Wilhlem stuff the first time I watched this episode. So, you are not alone in that.

Unreal

To be fair she did give Young Wil the benefit of the doubt.

Desmond

Well, yes. But it seemed that the benefit of the doubt lasted until the "with a face like that" line. That's why I wanted to expand upon it all with this comment.

45:00 I wouldn't say he doesn't like the sword, at least based on how he says "Don't you dare to look down on taking the sword, or the beauty of the steel blade. " He certaintly seems to have stronger feelings towards the sword than it just being what he is good at. 49:40 Probably because he wasn't actually trying to reveal anything, as well as him not having that mentality that he had with Emilia of saying it even if it killed him. 55:00 It crearly happens after since she saving him is when he finds out she is the Sword Saint, "Answer me Theresia, no... Theresia the Sword Saint." Which is why he says, "Were you laughin at me?"; for she had never revealed her status to him. The sword saint coming to see him train would feel like mockery since they would be in different levels, or something. 59:40 I don't think he is talking about the physical face of a woman, but rather the kindness of her face. That her expression is not that of someone who holds a sword. 1:01:40 Well, the way she finds that fighting to protect someone sounds good for her as well sort of implies that she didn't have much conviction to fight previous to meeting Whilhelm. That she is finally able to walk to the battlefield because that idea sounds nice to her too. 1:02:25 She is looking down on it in the sense of taking the sword without a true desire to do so. She just found a way to justifying her doing so, protecting others. So for someone like Whilhelm who has dedicated himself to it, that half-assed determination is an insult. 1:11:41 Well, the fog was dispersed by the fall of the Flugel tree, it was probably already turning into day previous to this. 1:25:35 He means: "You are burdened with the role of the sword saint because you are the strongest, no one could take your place. But I am stronger than you now, so I will take over the role that has been forced upon you." Not because she is a woman, but because she just isn't the type of person that likes to fight. 1:25:48 Why wouldn't she? You saw her expression when she was blocking his attacks desperetely, she clearly had a strained face. 1:27:42 Its heavily implied tho, just look at her face as she says that. She wields a sword because she is the only one that can fullfil the role of Sword Saint. 1:29:00 Well, that you will have to learn eventually. 1:29:49 Well, if I understood the circumstances, the motives, and felt like Theresia does, I wouldn't feel bad about it at all. 1:39:00 Because its all implied, there are many things to consider and analyze. Why was she so early in the morning watching flowers? Why did she go everyday in the morning to watch flowers and watch Whilhelm? Why did she never tell him that she was the Sword Saint? I hope my response didn't come off as too mean, so on a different note: Fun fact, the reason they are able to tell how many people have been erased despite not remembering is because they know how many people are in each group. If they now remember a group only having a certain amount of members, rather than the amount it should have, it means that the difference between those 2 numbers it the amount that have been erased.

domdodom

as someone who is watching this with you, i wish we had more of Wil backstory and his wife in this episode of director cut.

zachary Groombridge

Some of that might be clear in the light novel. It’s not in the anime. She is animated frowning the most when he doesn’t say that he likes flowers. And Wilhelm is oblivious to that expression on her face. After insulting her, she walks away with a totally normal expression and body language, a normal tone of voice. She says that she wants to weilding a sword annd has a reason to do so… and out of the blue he says that “with a face like that you shouldn’t wield a sword”. If there is subtext. It is so subtextual as to not appear in the anime. Whatever the intent might have been. The exicution does not communicate what you’re suggesting at all. Feels like any other interpretation of this scene is manufactured a bit. We have no evidence, textual, or visual to support it… other than a desire to not belive that the message is so shallow.

Desmond

I did not read the light novel for this section of the story (I did later for material covered in seasons 2 and 3, since I caught up before those seasons came out and couldn't wait!), so if there is added context there for these scenes, that is not for me to say. Wilhelm would not be oblivious to the expression on her face, since she saved him before that scene, wielding a sword. The way I see the reason they chose not to animate her expression when she left and keep it hidden comes from what older Wilhelm's says, which I'll expand on. And after his "with a face like that" sentence. He says that, he then says "don't underestimate the beauty of a steel blade". Is he saying that for no reason then?Just because he's mad? Or rather there is a concrete reason says it? I don't think my interpratation is manufactured, it is dependant on interprating things from the perspective of believing the older Wilhelm (who we all agree is a mature, deep and respectful person) when he said that "his wife did not want to wield the sword, but the sword loved her most. And with no choice but to live for the sword, she accepted her fate" in the previous episode. That is not subtext, it is just text. If the mods don't approve my initial comment, that's completely okay by me. I just wanted to try and explain my interpratation, which I've held since I first watched these episodes all those years ago.

That Guy

There is NO WAY Therisia fought him at full strength. Girly was trying to throw him one last ball. Also, the Wilhelm of the past was so abrasive and always rubbed me the wrong way, but I love how much he's mellowed out as an old man. Tragic that the death of his wife is what seems to have contributed to that the most though. I would love to give you more context, but I don't want to spoil! Also, Rienhard plays a good Jesse without needing to be genderbent haha

sillyspartan

Thank you for another amazing reaction. I may be misunderstanding when you ask why Satella doesn't kill Subaru when he talks about RBD but she has never done that. She just grabs his heart and instills fear in him. She did kill Emilia that one time but that is because he was determined to fight through it.

R

I know the Subaru's-face-in-Rem's-boba moment was another unfortunate bit of anime clownery but the fact that she responds with "thanks for the treat" sends me every time. Our favorite blue-haired Oni is so down bad 😆

L Freya

Thanks for your reactions and detailed discussions! I've been catching them every Sunday right on release, so I had to thank you before we get to the final episode! Hope you get a lot of agreement with your takes on the past Wilhelm scenes too, because I think you described exactly how I felt when I first watched it 10 years ago (honestly would not have been surprised if it was 15 years ago, feels so long now)! The backstory struck me as super sexist, and brought my opinion of Wilhelm down a bit, it definitely irked me the way it was worded in the sub. Plus it takes us out of the White Whale fight, so the timing was not favorable for me either. ⏱️ The whole 'Yes, I will take your awesome skill with the sword from you,' and she never really expressed that was her wish - nope. And EVEN IF SHE DID say please take the sword from me, directly to Wilhelm, that's not enough. It makes no sense. They really need to show us WHY she wants to have nothing to do with it, and it has to be a damned good reason, which isn't going to be easy. Now the fandom I'm sure (because I've seen it happen) will have some words to say, and maybe they should, translation errors and other reasons could exist, but as someone who watched the anime and formed an opinion based on solely the anime without interacting with other fans, I did not like that part of the episode at all. Oh the break time beach episodes, cringe. I forgot about those. Yeah, best to skip right over them haha! Getting Roswal in the beach episode would have helped I agree!

Mattias Jonasson

I also believe the backflash was quite bad mainly because I did not expect Wilhelm to be such an asshole however i believe that only the first scene contained the sexist remarks "the hell is a woman doing out here first thing in the morning" is a crazy statement. we saw the flashback where she kills everyone and saves him immediately followed by "its humiliating!" and "were you laughing at me" this to me is neutral and has nothing to do with gender as u felt, in my opinion he is talking about the fact he has been meeting up with theresia and training for quite some time not once did she mention to him that she was THE sword saint so he felt as if she was sitting there laughing at his bad swordplay in comparison to hers whilst training. Clearly he was insecure about his poor swordsmanship and right after nearly dying because of it he had an emotional outburst but in that scene he didn't say anything about man or woman, so I believe he was not claiming he was humiliated because they are a woman as u believe. "with a face like that you shouldn't be holding a sword" once again him being an asshole like all the other parts but he does not mention man or woman just attractiveness so to say he means "ur a beautiful woman so u shouldn't wield a sword" is a leap i believe as he did not mention any gender in that scene. Multiple times u stated we saw no scenes where Theresia disliked being a sword saint personally I think they could've made a bit more clear in this backflash however she did say "I am the sword saint. I didn't understand the reason why," from this we can say she did not choose to use the sword because she would understand why also "taking up the sword to protect someone that sounds nice to me too" tells us she only saw the sword as a tool for killing before and the fact that in her free time with Wilhelm she did not mention it at all tells u that she most likely does not care for it however it is not explicitly said. when Wilhelm says "don't you dare look down on taking up the sword or the beauty of the steel blade" I believe is Wilhelm saying Theresia didn't choose to wield the sword, had no reason to wield and now she took his reason when he did choose to wield the sword is like mocking him. at the ceremony they clash blades and he says "you're weaker than me, so there's no reason for you to wield the sword anymore" and "i shall inherit your reason for wielding the sword. and you need only become my reason for wielding it" you claim that Wilhelm says Theresia has to stand there and look pretty and Wilhelm has to protect her basically becoming a trad wife which I believe is not what he said, personally I believe he is saying he is the strongest therefore he will take on the role and duties of sword saint "her reason" which could only happen if he was stronger then them and she is no longer obligated to wield the sword all she is required is be his reason which means she has all the free time in the world to do what ever she wants because being his reason takes no hours she just is. at the end you ask why cant Theresia like flowers and be a badass swordswoman like Subaru I think she is clearly shown that she is a badass and very skilled and that she likes flowers but it was also told and shown that she dislikes wielding the sword even though she is a badass and Wilhelm allows her to not be forced to do something she dislikes which I believe does not suddenly make her not a badass she still is amazingly skilled she just no longer has to do what she dislikes. I do believe he is an asshole when he was younger like when he would not say he likes flowers or loves her and they way he spoke and acted however I don't believe it was as sexist as you thought because personally I only saw the line in the first scene where he mentions gender and the rest were neutral statements as they did not contain gender. I think its good that u got heated as characters u liked did things you did not it shows that you do like the series otherwise you would not care as much when the author makes a bad choice in your opinion, I personally have many qualms about one piece and Oda even the i love the series so i think its a understandable reaction and everyone should get more emotional when critiquing something you like. Satella killed Emily because he was going to say it no matter what fear struck him and in these two scenes he was just going to say what happened and when the fear struck he stopped just like with the wolves and all other time he tried at least that why I believe he was able to do that.

Callan Newster

Thank you for the very high quality reactions and analysis. Unfortunately, I feel like the anime leaves out a lot of context in Wilhelm flashback scenes which are part of a massive side story novel. Basically, Wilhelm is like someone who has dedicated their whole existence to being a chess grandmaster and Theresia shows up as someone who is born as a grandmaster but has to play chess reluctantly. Theresia’s attitude towards the sword (which she has for reasons I can’t give the whole context for) is spitting in the face of all the dedication Wilhelm has had for the practice hence “with a face like that” and “don’t you dare look down on the beauty of a steel blade”.

Callan Newster

Also, something that might be spoilers so it’s up to the mods on this. Theresia here is a very direct mirror to Reinhard as both are individuals born with great power and fated to be the sword saint. So, much of what Wilhelm says is also very relevant to Reinhardt’s situation.

Enrique Dominguez

Not trying to spoil anything, but a lot of the issues and questions you have will be touched on later on. Although I agree the backstory doesn’t do a great job at showing it, I think you are supposed to infer that Theresia was not fond of wielding the sword and didn’t really see a purpose in it. That’s why she reiterates the words Wilhelm had said previously of wielding the sword to protect those close to you and how she likes the sound of it. It’s implying that she got newfound resolve to wield the sword from him that she previously lacked. It all kind of hinges on you remembering a singular line in the previous episode where Wilhelm tells Subaru that Theresia did not wish to wield the sword but the sword loved her. It’s supposed to give the feeling that she was at the mercy of a fate she did not want/wish for.

Coral

I really appreciate how honest you are with your thoughts when reacting to anime. That's actually why I subscribed to your Patreon when I saw you were going to react to Re:zero. So please don't hold back! And don't worry, we'll get more content about the Astrea family in the future that'll answer most of your questions.

romaniablack

Thank you for the comment! I get that she didn’t reveal her title to him, but he was being a bit defensive to me; hahaha! But I realize we’re only seeing his POV and not hers; I’m sure at some point we’ll get it. I personally think someone can be kind and still hold a sword; but that’s just my opinion. And while Wilhelm thinks that she’s half-assed, again, he doesn’t really know her, so he’s assuming a lot. She clearly is good at her job and does it well and with dignity, at least from what we see. I just don’t quite see some things like you do and that is okay. We can interpret literature and media in different ways, and that’s okay. 🙂 Your response doesn’t come across as mean, and it’s valid, but it’s okay if I don’t agree with you. ^^ Thanks for the comment and explaining your opinion!

romaniablack

I wondered if translation would come into play with some of Wilhelm’s dialogue in this, so thank you for clarifying that. I still have a lot of issues with an author taking a sword from a female character and making it to where “the man” has to protect her; it’s just…not a trope that I like in fiction. But yeah, I would like to see things from HER perspective at some point - I’m sure we will at some point, like I said in the discussion, so all I can talk about in this is what I see with Wilhelm. I wouldn’t mind seeing a powerful woman not comfortable, but we just don’t see a lot from her POV in this and a lot of commenters I think are drawing inferences because they know things to come and I’m not there in this episode. I just don’t like the trend I’m getting with this series of “romantic interest must be protected by man, can’t protect self” with Wilhelm and Theresia and I’m hopeful Subaru and Emilia won’t follow that route. *fingers crossed* But thank you for the comment and kind words; it’s totally cool if we don’t agree - that’s the magic about literature and free will! 😀

romaniablack

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one! I can see if they give us more context later, my opinions may evolve, but I was like, "am I the only one irked by this?" So glad to hear that! Thank you for the comment!!

romaniablack

YES! I need Theresia's POV more and more of these two outside the few scenes we got so I am hopeful that will come up later in the series! Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

Yeah, I mean, I'm not going to yuck Rem's yum -- Subaru was like, "Okay, then." As long as Rem is consensually okay with that, then that's what matters! Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

Thank you for the kind words and comment!! I thought that Satella did kill Subaru before, but I guess that was the Puppy Curse from Arc 2, so thanks for the reminder on it!

romaniablack

Theresia throwing Wilhelm so many softballs, she needs to be on a D1 Scholarship, hahaha!! I definitely am glad that Wilhelm mellowed as he got older; it’s sad that what made that happen seemed to be losing her as well, but yeah, young Wilhelm does rub the the wrong way, but I’m glad that you’re not spoiling me - hopeful more context comes out eventually! And yessss, I love Reinhard and Julius as Jesse and James! Does that make Mimi Meowth? 😛Anyway, thank you for the comment and kind words!!

romaniablack

Thank you so much for the comment and the kind words!! Huzzah! I appreciate the support and am glad you are enjoying the discussions and my ramblings! Yeah, Wilhelm when he was young was offputting to me – the sub doesn’t do it any favors, to be sure. I’m really hoping that we get Theresia’s perspective later in the show to compliment and “fill in the gaps” for us, but yeah, I don’t think that young Wilhelm was in the right here – but yeahh, wow, we did need some balance - where was Roswaal in all this?! 😛

romaniablack

I do think that Wilhelm felt really inadequate in that she had to save him, but at the same time, he really never talked to her about being the Sword Saint, how she felt about it, etc. He just assumes that “she’s too nice to be a killer,” but never takes the time - in the flashback from what we see, at least - to get to know her perspective, he’s so wrapped up in what HE wants. But yes, like you said, he was really insecure in the flashbacks. Like I said in the discussion, HE doesn’t take her place and become the Sword Saint, as we see (because he’s not in present time) and his actions could have caused her death - which he alludes to in the present - so yeah, I just don’t care for young Wilhelm in this flashback, haha!! The person who says she dislikes the sword is Wilhelm, but like I said in the discussion, Wilhelm could be an unreliable narrator - we need to hear this directly from herself. I am hoping that we get a future episode where we get Theresia’s perspective more (no spoilers please if you know), but yeah, Wilhelm was still in the wrong throughout a lot of this flashback, and that’s just my opinion. Thanks for the comment and expressing your perspective!
