I always have complicated feelings towards Chen Gong's death, because like you said, he's relatable and an underdog. I liked him a lot as a character because of his complexity. Growing up in poverty and neglect, Chen Gong persevered and survived as a vagrant. At such a young age, he set aside his pride and sold himself to Mu Tipo and Gao Wei to obtain resources. Through his own efforts, he learned to read and write at such a high level that he was able to understand the Zhuyang Strategy Scrolls and become a new martial talent. His growth and charisma won over the Murong clan, who was notoriously loyal only to the emperor. Although his schemes were distasteful and self-serving, he hadn't yet done anything too cruel or disastrous to the common people or the jianghu, though he certainly never thought to lend a helping hand either. So, when Shen Qiao sealed his martial arts, I felt Chen Gong's rage. A large part of me was angry on Chen Gong's behalf and agreed that Shen Qiao had no right to undo all of his hard work. But at the same time, I understood why it had to be done. Even though Chen Gong hadn't done anything heinous yet, with his personality and goals, it was only a matter of time. Like Shen Qiao said, Chen Gong would have caused calamities in his pursuit of absolute power. Chen Gong's insistence that the trajectory of both of their fates were due to luck matches his inability to take responsibility for his choices. Sure, Shen Qiao was "lucky" that the one who saved him was Yan Wushi, but it was Shen Qiao's choices that got him to this point. If Shen Qiao had just passively followed Yan Wushi as a fake member of Huanyue Sect, who knows what would have happened to him! But no, Shen Qiao's choices led him away from a false identity and towards the truth about himself and the world he lives in. Chen Gong repeatedly makes choices that backfire on him because he never thinks of making choices based on the bigger picture. His decisions serve only him, and it's that narrow-mindedness that always puts him on the losing end. Interestingly enough, the ONLY decision he ever takes accountability for is selling Shen Qiao out to Mu Tipo. Whenever it's brought up, Chen Gong feels ashamed, no matter how strong he's gotten martially and politically. All the choices he's made thus far, he can excuse it as him having no other options. But regarding Shen Qiao and Mu Tipo, he DID have options (granted, all of the options were BAD)— but he chose to sell Shen Qiao out, even after all that he had done for him. His high regard for Shen Qiao's pure and just nature further enhances that shame. But, that pure and just nature is also what leads to the sealing of his acupoints and his death by a child who's just as ruthless and vengeful as he is.

SQ witnessing the kid kill Chen Gong and then talking about a possible succession problems in the future made me think of that one Markiplier meme where he goes: Well, that’s a problem. But not my fault! I did everything I could, and you did too…also why are you still here? 😆 Thanks for the fun discussion!

i like Chen Gong character writing because it’s very grey and conflicting … but just like Shen Qiao , the moment he threatened a child’s life i was done finding excuses for him. Chen Gong thinks the world owes him things and he is just reclaiming what’s he is owed… Shen Qiao never felt entitled to anything which makes him the person he is. So Chen Gong trying to put himself at the same level as Shen Qiao and making it seem like the only advantage Shen Qiao got is luck ticked me off and it also speaks about how Chen Gong is, since the temple, trying to smother his inferiority complex towards Shen Qiao by belittling what SQ has achieved and projecting all his insecurities into him. Chen Gong has the advantage of being super street smart, having a photographic memory and a very fast listener, all of it while being in perfect health and he made good use of his skills Shen Qiao was poisoned, lost all his martial arts, shielded and with no awareness of the world, and he built himself back from scratch in the most noble way So no , Chen Gong will never be on the same level as Shen Qiao

HAHAHA, that's a perfect quotation for this moment -- and honestly, Yan Wushi would approve - Shen Qiao not taking personal charge of a situation and realizing it's not really his business! PROGRESS! But still, what an insane moment! Thank you for the comment!

Chen Gong is a really well-written character and has done WAY more than I expected him to in this! And yessss, that entitlement! 100% agree with you on that front; yeah, the moment he threatens a kid, I was done with him. But yeah, you hit it on the head with him trying to belittle Shen Qiao for the sake of himself in his. He had all he needed WITHOUT doing any of that, to be honest! PREACH! Thank you for that and the comment!

I do love how much writing we got with Cheng Gong and his complexity as a character - he really put his pride aside to rise to the top. And getting literate and training - he really could have rose to the top of the jianghu if he’d worked to do it in an effective manner. I would say that while he hadn’t done anything too extreme, he was distasteful, self-serving and the moment he threatened that child, I was like, “Nope. We’re done, here.” He really did dig his own grave - the moment he took a child hostage, I didn’t feel any sympathy towards him. He didn’t have to do that AT ALL. With his prowess and potential, he didn’t have to. I agree 100% with SQ there. And I agree with you in Chen Gong’s inability to take responsibility for his choices; well said! Yesss “he never thinks of making choices based on the bigger picture,” I do blame his upbringing and lack of education in part of that, but he also dug his own grave, too. And that’s a great point about Mu Tipo! Thank you for taking the time to type all this out - that last line about the kid? 100% agree; chilling!! Thank you for the comment!
