So, Ikuya...The Little Mermaid, huh? Does that make Hiyori Prince Eric? Or Ursula? :P

There was SO MUCH TENSION between Hiyori and the Iwatobi Alumni this episode! I love that Mako stood up for Haru and his friends...but MAN, Hiyori my dude...you just aren't letting up, are you? And that last comment by him was SAVAGE, sir!

The music was amazing this episode, as was the Free! angst, the pacing -- basically, this episode as a whole was probably my favorite so far this season! So much set up! I can't wait to discuss with you all!

Now that you’ve caught up enough to make an opinion on Hiyori’s character, I need to let out how much he aggravates me. I just can’t stand him. One of my pet peeves in friendships are the “friend” that is seen as "overprotective" when really they're just controlling. And I think Hiyori is one of those. He's obsessed with Ikuya. And he’s so manipulative. The way he informed Ikuya of how he talked to the guys was in such a way that he practically forced Ikuya to agree with him. And I feel that by bringing him food and all of that he’s just manipulating him even more into making Ikuya feel guilty of ever confronting him. He might not be abusing Ikuya physically, but imo by controlling and manipulating him, he’s abusing him emotionally. Plus, he's always interfering in his conversations, with everyone, not just our boys. I mean, Ikuya has not shown any signs of wanting to ignore Haru and the others. Yes, he has mixed feelings about them. But, unlike Rin and Sasuke, who both showed hostility towards Haru when they first arrived, Ikuya has not shown any signs of being opposed to seeing the guys. And Hiyori just keeps interfering for his own selfish reasons of wanting to keep Ikuya for himself. He’s just toxic. He’s like the selfish version of Makoto. Makoto helps Haru through social interactions, but ultimately, he does what will be best for Haru. Hiyori on the other hand is a selfish guard dog that doesn’t want anyone near Ikuya but himself no matter how much the isolation affects him. Makoto would help Haru get out of his shell and isolation. Hell, he even helped Rin take Haru to Australia in order to help him expand his horizons. Hiyori, on the other hand, refuses to recognize that Ikuya is lonely and instead aspires to be the only one Ikuya can fill the loneliness with. I don’t like when characters toxicness is justified because of love. If you truly love someone, you help them do what’s best for them and not for you. It’s obvious that Ikuya needs to resolve his past issues with the boys in order to move on and feel better. And Hiyori just doesn’t care as long as he can have Ikuya all for himself. He’s the only character in this show that I truly despise. PLUS, NOBODY messes up with Makoto AND Haru on my watch! Makoto is frickin saint and Haru has already once given up swimming because he believed he caused Rin to suffer bc of it and now this ahole comes and throws his insecurities in his face! Ugh, I just can’t stand him. Sorry for the rant…I’ve been holding it in for a long time 😂😂😂 As for the Little Mermaid angle, I love the symbolism of how in order to get so good at swimming the IM, Ikuya had to give up the relay and with it his friends and everything that they brought into his life. On a lighter note, I also kinda ship Sousuke and Go 💕💕

Hiyori is just Hiyori. This season the angst is high.

Oh, the angst is THERE, but I'm kind of here for it -- it's like eating a spicy chip; there's a burn...but you keep wanting to eat the chips, hahahaha! And Hiyori....hmmmmmm....I've watched Episode 5 recently, and I've seen the preview for episode 6, which looks like it will focus on Hiyori and Ikuya's past, so I'm going to wait until that episode to reserve my full thoughts...hmmm....but yeah...MAN. @_@

Ahhhh, oh my GOD, the label of "Toxic Mako" -- WOW, I'm bringing that up in my Episode 6 reaction (I just watched Episode 5, so it's too late for that, haha!). YES, Ikuya has a lot of parallels to Haru, but lots of differences, while Hiyori and Mako (as fate would have them race one another) have a lot of similarities in their friendship/relationship with Haru and Ikuya, but like you said, some STARK differences. I do agree that Hiyori is being manipulative and holding Ikuya back, which while he may come at it from the intention of "protecting" him, it's doing the opposite and isn't letting him do the healthy thing and communicate and reconnect with his other friends. And yeah, while I want Ikuya to speak up and tell Hiyori off, the way that Hiyori treats him and communicates with him is quite manipulative and...problematic. Yeah, I see why people DO NOT like him -- I want to see Episode 6 before I fully form an opinion about him, but I will say: Don't treat Mako and Haru like that. Like, they're our boys...you don't talk to them like that! >.< And yessss, Ikuya gave up the relays and friendship to be amazing at IM...now the question is, if we're doing the classic story, is he eventually turning back to "sea foam" and "collapsing" from the pressure of it? Hmmmm.... Oh, and YES! I love SouRin, but SouGou works for me, too. Basically, as long as Sousuke ends up in the Matsuoka family, we're all good. :P

Usually in anime I like to give the "bad guys" the benefit of the doubt. I think this is the first time I saw a character on sight and was like "nope not having it" I heavily simp for ADAM so I think that alone says a lot when I didn't like Hiyori 😂😤

Back when I pointed out that Mako as an orca was the one to watch out for (as opposed to Sousuke), this was the moment that I had in mind. He stepped in completely on his own, and he knew he could beat Hiyori even if he hadn’t been training competitively. In short, Mako is a beast, and he knows it. He’s just too humble about it.

Ha!! I mean, I simp for Adam and Tadashi's relationship wholeheartedly, but Adam...isn't...Hiyori? Does that make sense?! Hiyori is a JERK, 100%. I want to see Episode 6 (I've just watched Episode 5 and saw the preview for 6 shows backstory on Hiyori) before I comment more on his character, but his cold demeanor towards the Iwatobi boys this episode wasn't cool...they'd probably be friends with you, dude, if you weren't a big jerk! :P

YES! I thought about your comment!! And I instantly thought, "this must be the moment," too! Mako is a great character because he's humble and kind, but is also a monster in his own right! I definitely think that on any day, it would be a tossup between him and Hiyori on who would win, and that says so much! You don't mess with an orca! ^^

We need more badass Makoto. When they show us how much time has passed it really hits. I just love that we get so many different characters interacting with eachother. Every team needs a mikoshiba seijuro. Hiyori is someone where you can understand him to some extend but can't agree with his actions. I know where he's coming from but the way he does it is bad. It's not good at all. It makes it worse. The way Hiyori is all confident when he looked at group but the moment he turned his back to them he's smaller and stops smilling. The phasate he puts on in front of others. Wish you a wonderful day!!

Mako as the badass orca we know he is! I love that he stood up for Haru and the others this episode...and gave Hiyori a run for his money! <3 The interactions this season have been so much fun! I am all in on every team having a Captain Mikoshiba as well! Yeah, Hiyori is....complicated...and I want to know more, but he's an antagonist we've never had in Free! before and I'm very curious how his character and his actions are going to be dealt with this season! Hmmmm....but you're right; he definitely puts on an act in front of everyone else. Hmmm... Thanks for the kind words and (I know I said this in the other comment but) have a wonderful day, too!
