So it seems there were two main things you misunderstood about episode 1. First, the whole 6 min 40 sec rule is ONLY if you write a cause of death. It says you have 6 min and 40 seconds after writing a cause of death, not after writing a name. So if you just write the name and nothing else, with no cause of death, the person dies from a heart attack in 40 seconds. If, before that 40 seconds is up, you write a cause of death, then the clock resets to 6 min and 40 sec, so you have the time to write all the details of the death. Light mostly wrote just the names, so the whole 6 min 40 sec thing is irrelevant in those cases. I hope that makes sense. The other thing you missed is that Ryuk still has his second notebook. They showed him with it when he met Light, when he said that he would be the one to write Light's name in his notebook. So he only dropped the one that Light has.

This is a must watch. Years can pass by but Death Note will never stop being top-tier so happy you're finally getting into it, will be a fun ride. I agree with your comparison between Eren and Light as a first impression but there is another character Light is the most compared to (won't tell who until you finish the series even though I'm sure you'll figure it out way before that) and I'm sure once you end this anime you'll inevitably will guide conversations in that direction as well, they will be really interesting :) Also, won't tell too much on your theories, but a detail you seemed to miss.. so if you rewatch ep. 1 look at what is shown from Ryuk at 15:00 Can't wait for you to meet the other characters!

RYUK! RYUK! my baby is here!!! And also, Light Yagami is here too. LIght, my first crush in anime... I never knew I was into people like light. Because my previous fictional crushes... or wait, Tom riddle kinda gives off the same vibes as Light, I have a type? I just realised? lol? I live for the biblical imaginary in this. I mean I live for biblical imaginary in any show but in this one? it's just so good. I love Ryuk because he just seeks his own entertainment and I guess where such a trait would be a bad trait. But because Ryuk is NOT a human, such things as morals and humanity don't affect him. I mean I'm not saying ur theory of ryuk being humans previously is wrong or right tough. It's just he's AT LEAST NOT ANYMORE a human. Which is sure fascinating tough, because you have this view of how he feels very humanoid, but I don't feel that. To me Ryuk does not remind me of a human. Interesting. I guess it might have smt to do with how people view humans and stuff like that, but I'm really interested to see how your outlook on Ryuk goes as the series progress. Light he's just. (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡ He's just so fascinating to watch, and I would watch him all day alone. I mean I used to. So I'm very biased, BUT I know I shouldn't cheer on him. Despite being someone that's VERY against murder and death sentences and stuff, I really love Light. He is really interesting to watch. I just really wish to see a world where he is the god. (not in the real-world ofc, I'm Christian and I don't worship other gods, but then again... light can be pretty charismatic and I'm very weak-minded)... I guess I'm going to ao3 tonight... to look for Light centric fanfics :D About light wanting people to know the existence of god, I don't think he wants people to know that HE is the god, just that he wants people to know that THERE is a god somewhere. and the logic being like, if people know there's a god who ACTUALLY passes down the judgment then they won't do bad things. Of course, light has no right to judge people, but it comes down to Who has the right? Personally, i believe that if there's a god that actually created everything and is genuinely behind everything. That guy has the right, but does he exist, who knows. What gives government officials (or whoever decides these things) who gives them the right to judge if people deserve death sentences? is it because of the laws that people together voted? Then long as light keeps killing criminals judged by the law, then there wouldn't be TECHNICALLY a problem? It's like a super complex thing and so fascinating. As for about the rules... There's a lot, just remember that u don't know them all yet, and don't bother anymore most of them are spoilers and others are... like idk? I have no idea what they mean and others have absolutely nothing relevant with what will happen, like rule xxxvi. All that rule does it... actually, never mind(you will see it in commercial breaks I think?), that rule killed me. Well yeah there are 101 rules plus those three from that one spin of the story The "report thing" it seems like you kind of misunderstood it in a way, but it's like you write a name, they die in 40 sec, BUT if you start writing the cause of the death before the 40sec is over, then the time lengthens into 6min and 40sec, during which you can write ur 4feet essay of how the person dies choked by their own pelvic girdle, (idk how that would work I made it up no spoiler there) and then the person dies. So you kinda misunderstood there, but I guess it's easy to misunderstand. Fun act Tetsurou Araki is the director behind Death note and he was also the director for AOT for long as it was in the wit studio, aka for pretty much all of it except s4. bruh, i started watching/listening your reaction and writing this comment around... half an hour after you posted this? and the clock is now? LOL.

Oh Death Note. We meet once again. Soo much nostalgia. Soo many memes. Soo many lengthy discussions. I have real fond memories of this anime. It was 2009, I was 15 when I watched this for the first time. *Insert obligatory “IM SOO OLD” here* Even though I had watched things like Pokémon and Studio Ghibli films etc before this…THIS was my real first anime series. You’re probably already aware of its reputation as a gateway anime for a lot people and to be honest it still is. On MAL for a loooooong time it was the most popular anime (now 2nd to AOT recently) and it both doesn’t shock me and does at the same time that it’s a gateway anime… but I’ll comment on that more with future episode. This is definitely going to be an interesting ride. Now that I’ve had over a decade with this story and read the manga long ago it’s safe to mention that I have OPINIONS 😂 but we will come to all that in due time! With Mamoru’s voice here it’s interesting that you felt he was different because I’m personally very used to this tone of voice that he uses. He uses it with Chrollo in HxH too and other characters … soft, charismatic and vaguely psychopathic 😄 THE RANGE THIS MAN HAS. People have already mentioned the small misunderstanding you had with the first episode so I won’t bore and repeat. There’s some firm rules set that should be fairly easy to get straight. Also I fucking died when you said Light reminded you of a Eren and Armin baby 😂 Oh my goodness … I don’t know what to make of that. Also when you mentioned Hamlet and Shakespeare tragedy *chefs kiss* love that you got that impression with one epsiode. We all are Ryuk as the audience. Just get the popcorn ready (or apples for Ryuk) and watch these humans and their messiness unfold

The first anime I ever watched😂My co worker demanded I watched this, it took me a while but I got there & it definitely made an impact lol time to rewatch chaos.

Alright Sacha!! I absolutely desagree with you in this one !! Please *desinsert the obligatory ‘I M SOO OLD’ from there* because I have the same age as you and girl we are at our best young age!! We rock!! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼😂😂 Death Note. was also my first adult anime and I know you are a die hard AOT fan like me .. a person of culture 😄 I am so happy to meet anime kindred spirits in this channel, it s awesome. I think we are going to have so much fun discussing this with Romania. Have an awesome evening

Sacha

Ahahaha! Don’t worry ☺️ I know we’re not old! I’m more just thinking about how loooong it’s been since I first watched death note and that length of time feels kinda crazy The discussion shall be ‘fun’ to say the least … fortunately for you Romania I don’t think they will be my essays that I write for AOT 😂

romaniablack

Ooooh, I love that this is the "first anime" for a lot of people! That's exciting!! :D I'm hyped to dive into this "chaos" with you all! :D

romaniablack

Ooohhhhhhhh, okay, so the report writing makes SO much more sense now that it's you have a certain time to write the death of the character in detail; thank you for that! And darn! Hahahaha, I thought he'd dropped two notebooks and had his as the 3rd; that makes much more sense, but I am a little disappointed there's not someone else that also has the notebook! ;) Ah, well, thank you for clarifying that!

Be Happy

And, she is finally here 😁 welcome on board of the DN train Romania !! Buckle up because this is going to be a mad ride from now on!! I see, some comments set straight some misunderstanding you had in the viewing and discussion so great to know that you have your facts right, because in the story every single detail is important !! This first episode is great in establishing things and the ideology of the MC !! You are on board now! Wait until you meet the other characters ! You re gonna be in love with this show!!! Light Yagami **sigh, hearty eyes*** , you are a psychopatic handsome genius young man , you have a God like complex, you were bored and found a fatal toy that will help you do * the Good* but my man watch that ego, and yours is huuuuge!! I love Light, my first anime crush !! Because of him I developped a weakness for psychotic toxic MC’s ( Aizen, Kaneki, Lelouche….) , time to go back to therapy 😂😂😂 ´ You cracked me with your Light is Armin and Eren ´s child , awesome!! I want to say yes but also no .. you are gonna understand why!! ‘ I love how he show establish Light as the serious, very confident in himself and hsi abilities, cautious, calm and collected person , he had some remorse, but his mission is greater that any inner struggle Because his mission is giving Justice to the world and as you said, Justice is subjective in his mind!! Ryuk , my baby is here!! Always présent and ready for some entertainment , the perfect duo !! You know , to continue with the parallel with AOT: When Light took the book , I was hearing Reiner in my head saying : The only person who shouldn’t have the power, Light is you!! 😂😂😂 Really happy to have this journey with you!!

romaniablack

I'm so happy to FINALLY be watching this series!! I can't wait to get into it!! And oooohhhhh, thank you for not spoiling me on the impressions of who they compare to; I'm REALLY excited to get more into Light's character and his motivations/psyche! And ooohhh, thank you for not spoiling on the theories! I'll make sure with the dub to go back and check out that moment you're talking about! Thank you for the comment! :D

romaniablack

Oohhhh, I feel like Light, Tom Riddle, there's definitely a type there! That's awesome! That is FASCINATING about Ryuk! I'm genuinely excited to learn more (hopefully) about him as the series progresses. :D And Light! He's VERY fascinating so far! And thank you for your view on him as the "god" -- that's really interesting! I definitely want to avoid spoilers about the rules, so I'll just assume I'll figure out more as we go...possibly. ;) I want to go in as blind as possible, but it will be curious to see what Ryuk did and did NOT tell Light at this point. And thank you for the clarification for the report part! That makes a LOT more sense! :D And oooohhhh, The director also did AOT seasons 1-3, that is PROMISING! I'm excited!! Ahhh, I can't wait to get into this series! Thanks for the comment! :D :D

romaniablack

Yayyyyy, I'm so excited to hop aboard the train with you all! :D :D I'm so excited for the ride! And yesss, we get SO much with ideologies and the world building in this episode, it's exciting! :) I'm so excited to get into Light's character and ahhhh, hahahaha, "time to go back to therapy" Oh no!! Hahaha, I'm intrigued. And thank you all for not spoiling me! I'm so excited!! :D For both what Light is going to do but also to see how Ryuk is going to handle this murder child, hahaha! AND YES!! I was imagining Reiner talking in my head that EXACT SAME LINE! hahahaha!! I love it! Thank you for the comment; I'm so ready for this series!

romaniablack

Hahahaha, don't say that this soon! You never know! :D :D

romaniablack

Y'all aren't old! :) But I'm glad there are "people of culture" commenting on this! I'm so ready to discuss this with y'all! :D

romaniablack

oOooohhh, you definitely hyped up this series for me, haha!! And don't feel bad! I was in college in 2009, so.... #ancient #getthewalkersready Hahaha! Age is just a NUMBER, though, right?! I'm definitely excited for this series! I have a feeling we're going to have a LOT to talk about, especially after an episode as loaded as this one was and it was just the BEGINNING! I'm all about Ryuk, and while I have this impression of Light, I know we're going to get more of him as the series goes, which is exciting! So much to think about already, but I can see it's going to be rich in character and story, like AOT, so fitting it's replacing it for now! :) But also YES, Mamoru has the range! I'm used to his more eccentric roles, but when you said Chrollo, I can totally see that! Good point! Thanks for the comment and kind words!!

Just want to push back against the idea that the inclusion of Native American culture or clothing in a work immediately makes people draw back or be cautious of racism. Not saying you did anything wrong in reacting that way, but I strongly disagree with the idea that we should never use other cultures in fiction because some people have, at times, done so without sensitivity. The Shinigami with the head-dress is obviously there to show that the Shinigami are the 'death gods' of all human cultures - there is an Aztec one as well. Sorry for the semi-rant, but I think it's an important point to make. "The 2000's were a different time" because we were more free of offense back then, and could explore ideas and cultures more freely. And Death Note is very much about exploring controversial ideas.

romaniablack

I probably shouldn't have said that in the reaction, and I'm glad that you brought that up -- cultural appropriation is...a very tricky subject. I'm ALL for representation and want it to be done properly, but you're definitely right to say that there should be cultural representation. It stuck out as the only one "different" in the moment, but like you noticed, there's an Aztec one as well. It was definitely a "cringe-y" moment for me as a reactor, and I do regret saying it in the discussion without articulating myself clearer. >.<

Nathan Grenawalt

No worries, and thanks for considering my words. One of my professors in college told me that "Tricky subjects are the ones we should talk about, not the ones we should avoid." He was talking about religion, but I think it applies equally well to cultural appropriation, racial bias in anime, and all that. One of the reasons I love reaction videos is that I get to see other perspectives on the same thing, and broaden my own perseptions.

romaniablack

Thank you -- and I love that! I try to be as open-minded as I can, so I didn't want to seem otherwise, but I'm glad you brought that perspective up; I agree, it's definitely something that SHOULD be talked about if it's tricky; good words from your professor! :) I am excited this series is potentially going to bring up complicated topics that are "hard" to talk about -- those tend to give some of the best discussions! :D

For me personally, Death Note is kind of coming-of-age anime. Not for Light, for me. Being 14 or 15 I, of course, also thought the world was flawed and the bad people must be isolated from the good or gotten rid of, and if somebody has all the information to discern bad from good, why shouldn't he do it? So. The next time I watched Death Note, it was a totally different show for me. The point where I stopped struggling with anthropodicea and just accepted the world as it is. Local bad and local good are still here but I no longer consider anyone worthy to judge the humanity as whole or condemn people to death just like that. Isn't that similar to saying that every book should be read twice: once, when you're younger than the hero, and once again, when you're older than them. Also no, the gut that got hit by a truck was not an example of "He was doing bad right here he will suffer more", it was an experiment to see if the suggested cause of death will work. The second book Ryuk keeps to himself, he has to write Light's name in it remember? /evil smile/

romaniablack

Ahhh, I like how you phrased that, that YES, many books and series have SUCH a different view when looked at younger vs. older! I love that line of thinking and it has me excited to talk about this series with you all! Also, ooooohhhh, I assumed Light was having empathy for that girl and making the man get hit by the truck because he witnessed the violence occur in real time. If that's NOT the case....hm. @_@ Well. Interesting, then. But thank you for the comment and clarification with Ryuk and his Death Note. Hmmmmm....evil smiles all around, huh? :P
