**CHILDISH HEADPHONE WARNING**

HOLY SMOKES -- this series took a second's breath and then came RIGHT out the gate swinging again! This time, we see another extent of Johan's influence...on THE CHILDREN!

This episode had me on the edge of the roof, literally, and I was NOT prepared for the strange twists this story apparently is deciding to take...so...NOW WHAT?!

Copied from my comment I left on the discord channel, because it ended up getting lost in a sea of black boxes 😅 : Finished the reaction, watching the discussion now, and I'm kind of curious about your reasoning concerning Johan teaching the children about superiority. Disclaimer: I am not a Johan fan, and I'm certainly not justifying what he's teaching these kids. But you mentioned he was teaching them to be white supremacists, and while obviously there is some connection bc of the concept of superiority in general and bc it is Germany after all, but Johan and these kids didn't bring race into the discussion. It reminded me of what Tenma told the *actual* white supremacists when he was captured by them in the previous arc (ep 16): "Johan will not sit above you. You couldn't make him lead you. He won't buy into your ideas of racial superiority. Johan sneers at all of humanity." So while the series makes it clear that there are still powerful forces of racism present in this setting/society, we haven't seen any evidence that Johan himself gives a shit about race.

It's true that Johan himself hasn't spouted white supremacist rhetoric but he does talk of supremacy or at least the kids think so and he's shown no issue of harnessing that base of support for his own means. How long can you be the messianic figurehead of a budding white supremacist movement without being thought of one yourself? As seemingly incongruent as it might seem at first glance I think you can claim not to care about race and still be a white supremacist if you choose to ally, profit from, empower & be empowered by such a movement. Man, I had trouble writing this post, I hope the tone comes of correctly and if not, I apologize. P.S: "Johann has no enemies." He disdains us all equally.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that he's the head of a budding white supremacist movement though, that's my point. The only white supremacists we've seen were those guys we ditched back in Frankfurt.

Also, we're discussing this over on the discord, we'd love for you to join us. That way we can get into the details and spoiler tag some things if necessary.

Johan seemed more than happy to help the white supremacists and let them murder a bunch of innocent people. It's like asking if a politician is actually a xenophobe or if they're just pandering to xenophobes to get votes. Ultimately they're still a pretty crappy person. I will give Johan this over Light, based on this episode Johan seems to have actual mental issues from whatever happened to him as a kid (beyond Kinderheim.) Light was just a prick.

Monster is still shorter than the Hunter X Hunter ant arch.😆

HAHAHA, I only got to the start of that arc -- no spoilers, please, but hopefully I can one day get back to HxH, but that's insane! @_@ Thanks for the comment!

I do agree in that in comparison to Light, Johan CLEARLY has had something terrible happen to him, whereas Light was pretty priveleged with his god complex. But yeah, whether you're ACTUALLY a supremacist or not -- encouraging that behavior does mean you should be held slightly accountable at the very least! Thanks for the comment!

I basically based it on the fact that the child said that Johan said the “superior” children that - presumably survived the “fall” – would be the ones to be the “victors.” I can’t say he’s specifically teaching them about white supremacy, so I can correct that in my next discussion, but maybe the better wording is that some of his “teachings” are definitely dangerous for children and he probably needs to stay away from them, especially if he’s encouraging them to play “chicken” on top of buildings. But there also seems to be a connector with white supremacist and bigoted groups flocking to Johan – I will definitely talk about TENMA being the one to say that Johan doesn’t care about humanity - but with the show focusing a LOT on the idea of how people perceive others vs. how the people ACTUALLY are - I think it is noteworthy that Johan is rather complicit in being used as a figurehead to spread hatred - again, it could be part of the chaos, but he’s a bit more heavy-handed in spreading the negative chaos than the positive, at least from what I’ve seen of him at THIS point in the series. Thanks for the comment! 😀

Alex, I agree – his conversations and actions have shown tendencies towards a complacency for being used as a figurehead by these groups – and he’s not denying it. But YES, being complicit in the power that their following gives you means that you, until you state otherwise, are somewhat in alignment with that movement; I definitely want to talk about it in the next discussion! Maybe he should be louder about that whole “disdaining everyone equally” so Tenma doesn’t have to say it for him…hahaha! Hmmmm….Thank you for the comment! 😀
