So the question of Guts' literacy has come up a few times in the wider Berserk community. While I am fairly certain that it has never been canonically confirmed, most of the more hardcore fans believe that he can read. One reason for this is that Guts is a leader within the Band of the Hawk and it would be quite frustrating to Griffith if he was unable to issue orders to Guts' raiders through a written set of commands. If Guts was reliant on one of his soldiers to always read the message for him or if Griffith always had to have a messenger verbally repeat battle orders then Griffith could never trust any plan to secrecy or know that his exact commands were relayed. The second reason involves minor spoilers so I won't get into it, but lets just say Guts knows some specific details about something which would make sense if he had read about it in a book, but not something he would have likely heard about in casual conversation.

That’s a fair point about his literacy – I mean, it does make sense if he was taught to read while with the mercs! Thanks for the comment and pointing that out!

Yay! Thank you for the preview and I'm excited to see more discussions about this theme too with Whiteboard-kun! :D
