A lot of people up here aren't confused at all about the word 'theory' when they say 'theory of evolution,' they want to discredit it and imply it's not real because they feel it conflicts their religion and creationism. Could be a fun YouTube section for you guys. Also, this episode rules, haven't seen it forever. The sea otters.

I don't think most creationists understand the difference between the two meanings of the word "theory". So yes, they are very much confused.

I think it's a mistake to underestimate the intelligence of these people. It's easy and I've definitely fallen back on dismissing them like that. But I think it's dangerous. Anyway, I do know for a fact that for some of them, calling it "the theory of evolution" is a snide way to dismiss it because they insist it's not real. You could say that's an issue of intelligence, and sometimes yeah, for sure. But in some cases, they're perfectly intelligent, they know what words mean, and the reason for holding onto the "theory" thing is more complex.

Thanks for the comment! In this video, we specifically addressed the use of the word "theory" because we had received a couple of comments on another video saying that we were using the term incorrectly. In those cases, the commenters were thinking of "theory" in the scientific sense rather than its broader, everyday meaning. We've also had people misunderstand it in the opposite way, so we wanted to clarify why we use the word the way we do. Our goal was simply to explain the context and meaning we intended when using the term.
