Tomorrow's TCV premiere will go down in history.

We have never worked so hard on a video, nor released such a professionally refined documentary. While this is already a lot, it wouldn't be possible without the initial work that went into planning and doing the research study.

I'm extra excited that we'll be tuning in from The Voice Foundation Symposium, where we'll be huddled with a group of vocal researchers, likely whispering and giggling and biting our nails all together while soaking in this victory in voice science.

I hope you will join us.

We want this research to reach far. If you attend (or at least watch the video within the first 48 hours), YouTube's algorithm picks up the influx of views and will automatically suggest this video to more people. That's how trends are started! So, if you want to help us get voice science to the masses, you can do that by watching the documentary as soon as possible.

Just tonight, a bunch of voice scientists gathered around the table and looked at the first video where we put a scope down Will's throat (Operation Throat Cam). I was struck by how many times I've shared particular moments or nerded-out with a colleague over a particular position.

The Science Behind Vocal Distortion: Will Ramos of Lorna Shore has so many more moments that I want to share - 5 times as many moments, at least, because we do more procedures! I hope you will all be eagerly watch with me.

Bests,

Elizabeth

The Science Behind Vocal Distortion: Will Ramos of Lorna Shore

This is the most insane piece of history that I've ever been a part of. How did a professional opera singer end-up researching metal screams?! Two years ago, Will Ramos and I met for the first time and we put a camera down his throat (full laryngoscopy). Fast forward a lot of collabs later, we met back at the University of Utah Health to conduct some of the most in-depth vocal research ever performed. As Patient Zero, Will Ramos not only reveals his innards through these comprehensive tests, he also is shaping the future of voice science. Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she works alongside the team at The University of Utah Health and the VAST research lab on the first ever harsh vocal research study of this kind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you to: University of Utah Health Staff Will Ramos of Lorna Shore Amanda Stark, PhD., CCC-SLP Ingo Titze, PhD Marshall Smith, MD, FACS Lynn Maxfield, PhD --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I definitely recommend watching the original video without interruptions. Can't wait! 😁 🖤 🤘

Absolutely I will be there with bells on (does anybody use that expression still? Lol). I can’t wait. Just offhand, though I don’t know his work much, I can see that his face and throat are very relaxed. We know that too much pressure in any area of the throat against too much pressure from the diaphragm, would make any kind of sound such as his impossible. But he has a relaxed light quality, which I suspect is the way he ‘carries’ his vocal apparatus as well It’s all connected…one body, and parameters I have discovered, generally exist similarly throughout the body. Anxiety stricken people like myself at age 20, oh I had tension in my voice, in my eyeballs, in my kneecaps eyc. . I had to learn relaxation, but many of my students were physically relaxed right in the door, They are naturally resonant sound. It’s already there, & they were generally more emotionally balanced as well. In him, I see these qualities. These ‘natural’ students could skip to more advanced work. And that’s where nature versus nurture enters our territory, from the world of psychology, To me, it’s component of this whole conversation. I’d be fascinated to see how many more voices might be able to achieve the kind of things he does, and I’m also interested the physiology of it. Are there structures or spaces and shapes he can make naturally, that some singers would not be able, even with study, to command.? This is the most fascinating stuff and I come from an era where nobody did this, nobody was interested in doing this kind of science. Either you had talent or you didn’t. It was harsh. But my journey from Juilliard student with the tight voice, through my own growth, which was facilitated by all the movement classes which had the effect of relaxing my entire body & my voice opened up. My own work with my students was heavily influenced by my own experience, and so I began to specialize in working with voices that were tight, tense, regardless of their musicality. I’m excited to study this work. Can’t wait!

For sure I'm going to watch this tonight!! Let's fire the boosters🚀. Unfortunately, I won't be able the attend the premiere cause I've got an appointment I cannot postpone. But I will be enjoying that stuff this night, definitely 😀. Wish you much success with this one🤘.

A recommendation: 3 Libras from A Perfect Circle. I think you might appreciate it.

Like Mike of Midgard, I,too, have an appointment. In all the excitement of the science, I'm hoping Will is not tence. Would that effect the outcome? [Nerdy question]

Harrison Cook

That was an amazing video. Thank you!!! Am a complete newbie to voice science and this was fascinating.

Scott Pearce

It was a great video, so much done. Hopefully that whisky Will wanted helped that throat afterwards
