Never waste a good light.
The whole scene is complex, with plenty of planes, but the light is the main feature of this picture... together with Nasty, of course!

I can see the interest in having multiple planes but wouldn’t closing the door behind the model have cleaned up the background ?

It would have, but I think I still prefer to have a longer distance to appreciate the OOF mirror (and reflection) in the background. This would qualify as a "candid" picture. Possibly the closed door would have suggested a more controlled studio look, I have taken plenty of pictures like that in the nearby bedroom, but without the chair. A much better approach for an abstract nude study.
