Take a look at this gorgeous flower I discovered a few years ago during one of my walks in Edwards Gardens, Toronto. This Candy Stripe Peony is so stunning that it felt a bit intimidating at first, thinking of all the layers and colors needed to capture its beauty. I kept the photo on my phone for 4 years, always knowing that one day I'd work up the courage to paint it. Well, last week, I finally did!

The trick was slow layering on the petals and lots of negative painting for the background while simplifying the petals in my outline. I experimented with so many reds! I highly recommend Quinacridone Coral and Carmine from Daniel Smith as a base, plus some Perylene Violet for the shadows.

I recorded the full process and posted it yesterday, along with black-and-white outlines. It's available on all Tiers:) The total painting time (excluding drying) was about 5 hours. I'll also be doing a detailed peony tutorial this year—maybe this one, maybe a yellow one, I haven't decided yet.

For now, I hope you enjoy the step-by-step process!

I haven't been to Edwards Gardens in years. This is a lovely painting! Will be a challenging one for sure.

Absolutely outstanding! You blow my mind and inspire it at the same time. I'm still working my way through your beginner and intermediate classes. Watching you and learning from you has given me so much confidence to build my skills. Thank you for sharing! ❤️

Stunning and I am excited to attempt it. Yours is such an inspiration!

It would never have occurred to me to put a hot pink under a cool pink. This is why I learn from you.

Thank you Elizabeth! I was truly experimenting here. Both ways work in retrospect - you can always glaze hot pink on top, it will be a bit more vibrant. This peony really challenged me if I am completely honest, I am not 100% sure yet how I would approach it the second time, but I have several photos that I took of the same bush, from different angles, so I might come back to it later and "think through it" again :)

Thank you so much Kelly! This one was tough but a good challenge + lots of practice with reds, including my new favourite Carmine. I am back to "regular schedule" with narrated step-by-step tutorials next week:)
