Welcome to the King Parrot Watercolor Demonstration! This composition was originally created for a live demo on the Terracotta platform in 2024. Now that the embargo has been lifted, I’m excited to share the real-time recording of the original painting from that workshop.

All relevant resources— including a black-and-white outline, step-by-step photos, and the reference images I used—are linked in the description below.

Note: As with all my demo compositions on Tier #1, this recording does not include voice-over. Fully narrated tutorials with step-by-step guidance are available in Tier #2 and Tier #3, featuring a variety of bird and flower compositions, including hibiscus and various parrots. For a full list of narrated tutorials, visit my website: www.annabucciarelli.com/classes

🎨 WATERCOLOR SUPPLIES:

PAPER: Arches Cold Pressed 140lbs 100% cotton paper, 12 x 16 inches

BRUSHES:  You will need at least 2 round pointed brushes: Larger {sizes #3-5} for big washes, and smaller {#0-02} for finer details.

Pencil 2-4H and eraser.

🎨 WATERCOLOR PIGMENTS:

NOTE: The majority of the composition can be painted using similar colors of your choice - I encourage you to experiment and use your favorite blues, greens or reds. For example, You don't necessarily need two red pigments for the flower - I am simply showing you my favorite options - a warmer Coral and a cooler Red.

ACCENT BLUE: Phthalo Blue Green Shade QOR {PB15:3}.

MEDIUM BLUE: Indanthrone Blue from QOR (PB60).

BLACK-BLUE: Indigo from Daniel Smith {PB 60, PBk 6}.

YELLOW:  Benzo Yellow from QOR (PY154).

WARM GREEN: Hookers Green from Daniel Smith {PG 36, PY 3, PY 150, PO 48}.

COOL GREEN: Aqua Green from W&N.

WARM RED: Quinacridone Coral from Daniel Smith {PR209}.

COOL RED: Quinacridone Red from QOR {PV19}.

DARK RED/BROWN: Perylene Violet from Daniel Smith {PV29}.

PURPLE: I am using Dioxazine Purple from QOR {PV23}.

I wish I could push the heart button a whole bunch of times and give you at least a hundred likes for this! I am very happy that you decided to post this! ❤️✨

Monalisa Mackey

Me too! This is absolutely gorgeous and I have red hibiscus in my yard so it will be lovely to see how you paint them…and what a beautiful king parrot! 💕. Thank you, Anna!

Jojo

I love your flower/bird compositions and this one is truly stunning explosion of color! Also kudos to terracotta for not forcing exclusive rights to the demo and acknowledging that artist’s work belongs to the artist her/himself.

Rendi

Love all the colors. Have to try this one soon. Thanks Anna.

Xoriat

I just wanted to say that watching you paint eliminates my anxiety. That's saying a lot! Thanks for your videos

Gorgeous painting Anna! I haven’t painted since the Blue Pumpkin but I plan on picking up my brushes again for this one! Thank you. 😊

Yuki Dickson

Oh thank you for posting this! I loved this class. Please do more if possible 💜

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you Yuki! :))) THis was an interesting experience doing a live painting. My goal is to do more regular "lives" - but for Patreon subscribers / Youtube subscribers instead of making people go going outside of these platform and pay extra. After I tested this one, I bought a new camera that can connect directly to my laptop so I can "manage" the live stream myself and I'll test my first live very soon (we are moving to a new house so I am re-arranging my studio) and I super excited to test all of this soon (a little intimidated by the technical aspect but I promise I will figure it out!) Have a wonderful day!

This is a beautiful painting, a live class would be great. Would you maybe be able to speak to maybe tell us what colors you're using? That would help.

Anna Bucciarelli

Yes of course - as with this demo, i would provide a list of materials + outline ahead of time:)

Anne

I joined the second tier especially for the voiceover to this bird, I’m disappointed I spent the extra now

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Rebecca, as usual the pigments are listed in the description. Thank you!

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Anne. As outlined in the tier description, I offer a combination of narrated tutorials (Tier 2) and demos without voice over (Tier 1). This demo component was introduced last year by popular demand - as a bonus - since folks wanted to see my more experimental work that I don’t have capacity to narrate. As a Tier 2 member you have access to a full library of narrated tutorials, including numerous parrots and flowers (you can browse them via the index post pinned to the top of PATREON page) or my website www.annabucciarelli.com/classes but of course if you are unhappy with your options - no problem at all - I can issue a full refund and remove your account 😊 Please let me know how you wish to proceed. Thank you!

Sammie Bryant

I'm sorry, I meant as in written above the color you choose as sometimes it's hard to tell. That would probably be a lot of writing so probably defeats the purpose of a demo. I didn't fully think the process thru...sorry. Thanks for sharing your talent with us, I appreciate it. Bottom line, composition is gorgeous but for advance students which is fine.

I love this one! As I watched you paint the Hibiscus I noticed that you dipped into at least four wells on the Red Palette. I can work out the Quin Red and the Coral - but is there also something like Opera Rose too - and maybe one other?

Victoria Paulis

Congratulations on moving to a new house! It can be super stressful but I hope it is an upgrade for you!

Yuki Dickson

Thank yo that would be amazing!

John

I just finished the King Parrot & Hibiscus demo after spending a few days working on the parrot as a stand-alone and learning the feathers before starting over and taking on the entire composition. I really love this one and couldn't stop adding final touches because I didn't want to let it go. Thanks for all the tutorials and demos you've given us. This might be my favorite so far. Now I'm onto the yellow rose and taking on the challenge of backgrounds--something I want to learn how to do without it coming out like a 4th-grader's art project. I also need practice with yellow. I feel like I've spend most of my time focused on reds, blues, and greens. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Stephanie Cornell

Hi, I am not able to hear the voice over on this. Am I doing something incorrectly or does this not have voice over for Tier #2 and #3 Thank you kindly

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Stephanie, Every month I offer a mix of demos (without narration) and tutorials (with narration). This is a demo, the original live session where I painted another copy and talked over it is owned by Terracota. For a full list of narrated tutorials, please refer to the Index post pinned to the top of my Pattreon Home page or - if you prefer to browse by images - you can check out my website: https://www.annabucciarelli.com/classes Thank you!

Stephanie Cornell

Aww I see, what a joy it is to have at least the demo version, thank you. I appreciate the quick response. Maybe I will try to challenge myself and try it without your step by step voice guidance. Wish me luck!

Kathleen Highaam

Darn. I was wondering the same thing about the voice over. . I bought paper, all the paints and traced it so I’m ready to paint it,

Bonnie

I understand that this video has no narration but why not add a voice over to this video and reupload? It would help a lot. Or maybe even just add some pop up labels to say the technique and paint color your are using? Just a thought. I really enjoy your videos and feel like a little more info would help the viewer.
