This is the ad-free version of my latest YouTube video, where I share recent watercolor explorations and answer thoughtful questions submitted by Patreon members—all about painting with yellow pigments. Thank you for your insightful comments! They helped shape a focused narrative around the key challenges that come up when working with yellow: from pigment selection to choosing shadow colors that complement yellows beautifully.

The real-time demo (without narration) is available to all Patreon tiers here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/demo-3-yellow-pt-127025821

A fully narrated tutorial—featuring a zoomed-in version of this composition and a deeper dive into yellow pigments and background creation—is available for Tier 2 and Tier 3 members: ttps://www.patreon.com/posts/yellow-rose-pt-1-125881578

I'm routinely surprised to see you using Cadmiums since you layer a lot, but you always nail it! I don't trust in myself not to muddy it, do you have any recs for a very similar transp/semi transp substitute for cad yellow? Thank you, Anna? Gorgeous, as always!

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you Morgan! The Yellow Cadmium I used here is not technically a classic Cadmium - Daniel Smith makes these "hues' using several single pigments, and this one is a mix of 3 different yellows PY 53, PY 151, PY 83. They still call it Cadmium but its definitely easier to blend and layer: https://danielsmith.com/color-stories/watercolors/cadmium-yellow-medium-hue-watercolor/ I don't have a Pyrrol red here to test... I think in terms of consistency/staining it will work (just based on my Pyrrol Orange experience) but it might be too intense. I would use a tiny bit only. Another good alternative is Perinone Orange or Orange Hue from Daniel Smith, Winsor Orange Red Shade from W&N. Any Vermillion from any brand would work as well! Thank you!

Anna, I cannot fully explain how much I treasure you! Your artwork is stunning. Your tutorials are amazing and you are always so kind and patient with us. I find your tutorials perfect for me because I tend to have more success with detail work. But my eyesight is getting worse and I find I need to keep my pencil lines much darker than they should be so that I can see what I am doing. This is ok if I am going for a darker, more intense look. But I love the paler more etherial, luminous effects. Any hints on how I could approach pale tones and still disguise pencil lines?

Hi, Anna~ I am just getting used to figuring out how to get hold of you~ The question for you that I have, does not concern this particular video, but rather your moose~ What I am wondering is, why do you use so much blue on a brown moose? Sincerely, PHYLLIS~

Genevieve Rheuban

Hello Anna….beautiful painting, as always! I wanted to request a sunflower if you’re ever up to it. I’m a longtime fan, and have seen probably all of your available tutorials. I don’t remember seeing a sunflower. But, please correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you so much in advance!

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Genevieve! Thank you for your message - indeed I only did sunflowers once or twice, years ago, and they were quite small and decorative. I think it was a part of the rooster series - I'll add it to my to-do list, it's long overdue:) Have a great week ahead!

Hi Phyllis, Regarding the moose question: I typically avoid using pure blacks straight from the tube for a couple of reasons. First, they don’t mix well with other colors and tend to create muddy results. Second, they often look too harsh or unnatural—since, after all, there’s really no true black in nature. It’s not a color, but rather the absence of color (I think I did a longer video on this topic on Youtube once!). Instead, I prefer to use Indigo—specifically the one from Daniel Smith, which is actually a mix of black and Indanthrone Blue. I love it because the Indanthrone Blue gives me a lot of flexibility. When slightly diluted, it mixes beautifully with nearby browns (or whatever else I’m working with) without creating dull, muddy patches. It still reads as ā€œblack,ā€ but with much more life and nuance. Many artists mix "black" from 3 primaries for all the reasons i mentioned above, I just prefer Indigo as a shortcut:) Also, just a quick reminder—the best way to reach me with questions is through the Direct Message feature here on Patreon. I set aside time every Friday to go through DMs and respond, but due to the volume of public comments, I’m not always able to catch everything. You’ll find the DM option under the "Community" tab on the left-hand side. Hope this helps! Warmly, Anna
