🎨 Just finished a brand new composition featuring a range of granulating watercolors — all to help you see how these magical pigments behave on paper. The full YouTube video is coming this weekend! If you have any last-minute questions about granulating vs. non-granulating paints, feel free to drop them below — I’ll do my best to answer them in the video.

📚 As always, now that I’ve worked out the key steps in this experimental piece, I’ll be recreating the central elements — including the beautiful bird, key leaves, and several orchids — for our fully narrated, step-by-step tutorial in May (Tier 2 and Tier 3). It’ll be a deep dive with detailed instruction, and I can’t wait to share it with you!

🎥 I’ll also be posting a real-time demo recording of this initial study (with a black-and-white outline) next month — this version will be available to all Tiers, and will include no narration, just 6 hours of uninterrupted painting for you to follow along at your own pace.

NOTE: You don’t need to purchase a full range of granulating pigments—a small selection of key colors is more than enough. In the upcoming video, I’ll be showcasing a variety of pigments from Schmincke and Daniel Smith for illustration purposes only. For the actual painting, I’m using just three granulating colors, one of them is a part of my core palette. If you’ve followed any of my previous tutorials, you likely already have them: Green Apatite Genuine and Cascade Green from Daniel Smith, and Tundra Violet From Schmincke:

My Favourite Granulating Pigments (used in the painting):

Green Apatite Genuine from Daniel Smith {PrimaTek Mineral Super-Granulating}: https://amzn.to/3x1Mt4o

Cascade Green from from Daniel Smith {Regular Granulating}: https://amzn.to/49vWswp

Schmincke Tundra Violet (Super-Granulating): https://amzn.to/3RxUNzP

Other colors that I will test in this demo (swatches, not in the painting):

Phthalo Blue Green Shade from Qor (non-granulating)

Ultramarine Blue from Daniel Smith (granulating)

Schmincke Forest Olive (super-granulating)

Schmincke Forest Brown (super-granulating)

Schmincke Forest Green (super-granulating)

I am so excited, Anna. I try to use granulating exclusively. I’m really looking forward to this and perhaps some tutorials.❤️ love irises and spring flowers as well.

Jojo

Love it! I once won jackson’s art giveaway and got all Schmincke granulating paints. I love to play with them but I rarely use them in a painting together with non granulating paints. Mostly for an easy branch, stem. I love how you are pushing us to do more and more :)))

Kevan Shaffer

Absolutely Gorgeous Anna! I've been collecting some of your suggested granulating colors. Looking forward to seeing this.

Janet

Will that be a tutorial? It's beautiful.

Lynn Muster

Yes, I too hope this is either a tutorial or demo 🥰

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you, Janet! As part of my usual process, I’ll be recreating the bird, key leaves, and several orchids for our fully narrated, step-by-step tutorial in May (Tier 2 and Tier 3). I’ll also be posting a real-time demo recording of this initial study — complete with a black-and-white outline — next month, for those who’d like to see the full process unfold. Just a heads-up: my first versions are always a bit more experimental and a little chaotic, which is why I often recreate them later in a more structured, teachable format.

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Lynn! It will be both — I’ll be recreating the bird, key leaves, and several orchids for our fully narrated, step-by-step tutorial in May. I’ll also be sharing a real-time demo recording of this initial study — complete with a black-and-white outline — next month, for anyone who’d like to follow along with the full process. You always do such an amazing job, even with my most busy experimental first explorations — I can’t wait to see your version!

CynthiaJQ

Gorgeous as usual and looking forward to tackling it!

Sammie Bryant

Beautiful! Can't wait to see the tutorial, it's gorgeous! This looks like it's a larger painting, which I absolutely love. If it Is, there any way you can also include outline in bigger form, maybe in two pages so we can print it larger? I can't seem to be able to enlarge outlines.

Sammi Ulanowsky

Hi Anna, As always, your work is gorgeous and I am looking forward to playing with granulating colors. Do you have a few suggestions of granulating colors we can start with? Maybe three or four colors and brands we can start with? Thank you!

D lonergan

I cannot wait! I love the granulating paints and have invested in most of the schmincke plus many daniel smith….but they tend to sit unused. My questions would be: do you use them alone or as a base layer or as a glaze? How do i achieve the most “granulated” look? Can i mix with non granulating or does that just destroy the effect? Is there a way to enhance the granulation? My experiments have been quite disappointing, so i am obviously not using them correctly.

Kimberly Roberto

can you please share which pigments will be used so that I can purchase them now? I want to be prepared as soon as it's available

eli

Wow Anna! Thank you for always coming up with exciting compositions that teach so many different skills! can't wait!

Brian

I absolutely love the green and purple colors. Even though they are opposite on the color wheel, for me it can be challenging to find the right hues that compliment each other the best. I love this piece!

Jan Dupont

Anna as a general rule are the granulating pigments more costly than non-granulating pigments?

Carol Brantner

I have a lot of granulating colors. I am looking forward to exploring with them.

Linda J.

My beginner input questions into granulating colors amount to two. 1) While the tube will state it is granulating, are some more so than others? Does that come down to mfg or the pigment itself used? In other words, what tips to know how how strong or weak the effect will be. 2). It was mentioned earlier, are they best used stand alone or can the be under/over other non-granulating glazes?

Ulrica Hållén

I guess you will, but anyway I would like to know which colors are used in the painting. It's wonderful, and I have received a range of 12 Schmincke supergranulating colors as a gift but never tried them.. now seems like a great opportunity to take them out of their tubes :-)

James M Thaxton

Anna? I just have a question to post to you about the granulation. I've noticed in the past you tend to use the granulating paints out of Germany, but what do you think of Daniel Smith's primatech naturally granulating pigments? Have you had time to double with those I think there are 30 or more of them at this point they're all fantastic and not all granulate but out of that "not all ", only about two or three do not granulate of the 30 they're quite amazing. Again, any thoughts?

Yvette

Thank you Anna for all you do for us your work is gorgeous I didn’t have a chance to paint your yellow roses because I was in the hospital now I will try soon I feel better . My question is how long you have to wait to put drop of water on the granulating paint?

Gwyneth Anderson

I'm so excited to see this - it's just stunning and I can't wait to give it a try. I'll second the request to know the granulating colors ahead of time in case I need to get some. We don't have a local art store and I have to order from Amazon - half the time they send the wrong tube. The good news is I've established a warm personal relationship with all the guys at the UPS store where I return the paint on a regular basis.

Kimberly Gipson

Would you please consider doing some tutorials sized specifically for your new special sketchbook? I'd love to fill it up with your tutorials!

Perga Fey

Simply lovely and thank you so much .

Shellee Hoyt

I agree with everyone else. Absolutely gorgeous!

Yvette

Hello Anna can you tell us what color paint to get in granulating water color and what brand. Thank you in advance

Anna Bucciarelli

Absolutely! I have 3 small compositions in the works that are done in the sketchbook and will be released in June here on Patreon, timed to the sketchbooks beings mailed to everyone who bought it back in March-April :)

Anna Bucciarelli

Oh That's amazing! I only have 7 of their super granulating colors - they are SO MUCH FUN! I've updated the description to include the colors used: Green Apatite Genuine from Daniel Smith {PrimaTek Mineral Super-Granulating}: https://amzn.to/3x1Mt4o (you can use any of the Schmincke warm granulating greens instead, for example Forest Olive) Cascade Green from from Daniel Smith {Regular Granulating}: https://amzn.to/49vWswp (again, use any of the Schminke bluish leaning greens) Schmincke Tundra Violet (Super-Granulating): https://amzn.to/3RxUNzP

Anna Bucciarelli

Kimberly, I've updated the description to show which ones I used. Thank you!

Kimberly Roberto

what size paper did you use? I will buy it so when your video posts, I will have the correct size

Kate Greenfield

Hello Anna I joined your Patreon today and downloaded the app because of this piece. I’m very new to watercolour but I’m excited to explore with your guidance. I’m thinking this is the best way for me to learn as I live very isolated in Outback South Australia. I used to work on a cattle station that had Goildian Finches ( they are an endangered species). Very special. Looking forward to being your pupil. Can I ask how do I find out about the Facebook group?

Nancy Mulia

I was exposed to the beauty of Schminke from another channel, and the ones you chose for this piece are just beautiful. I usem sparingly bc they are so perfectly smooth. Thank you Sweet Anna!

Yvonne Stanley

Gorgeous painting! I only signed up with your channel a week ago, so excited to recreate your lovely projects!

Sammie Bryant

Looking forward to the granulating paints, they look so gorgeous. Is this tutorial coming out soon or was I confused with the yellow rose? I thought it was going to be posted this past weekend?

Kimberly Roberto

I thought it was going to be posted too. I bought the paints and paper and waiting for the posting. Anna, you have us all excited about this , can you please give us an update?

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Sammie and Kimberly, Thank you so much for your message—and for your excitement and enthusiasm about the upcoming tutorial! I completely understand the anticipation, especially since you’ve already gathered your supplies (which is amazing!), and I really appreciate your patience. I just want to clarify the regular cadence of how I share content each month, as it might not always be obvious from the outside or to new users. I typically begin by designing an experimental piece—like the one I recently shared—where I test out color combinations, work through the challenges of the composition, and gather questions from patrons like yourselves to address in the class. That’s followed by a shorter YouTube video version of the concept—this one is already available on YouTube, and I’ll be posting the ad-free version here on Patreon on Monday. After that, I begin painting a refined version of the piece specifically for Patreon. That process takes about a week, and then I go into editing a fully narrated tutorial, which includes scripting, voiceover, color corrections, outlines, and adding color labels. It’s a pretty involved process (not just speaking over a time-lapse), and I always aim to keep the quality high and the instruction thoughtful and clear. So the full-length tutorial will begin rolling out the week of May 19, in chapters as usual. Thanks again for your kindness and enthusiasm—it truly keeps me going. Just a gentle reminder: I receive a large volume of comments across different platforms, but my commitment is to personally answer all Patreon questions that come through the Direct Message feature, since those land directly in my email inbox. I set aside time every Friday to go through and reply to as many as I can, so feel free to reach out there anytime! Warmly, Anna
