This is the ad-free version of my latest YouTube video, where I dive into the magical world of watercolor granulation ✨ We will explore different types of granulating pigments—including mineral-based and the so-called super granulating varieties. I will share my favourite techniques that will help you enhance granulation effects, and walk you through a full composition that combines both granulating and non-granulating pigments.

Thank you so much for all your thoughtful questions last week 💛 I tried to address as many as I could in the video, and I’ll be going even deeper in the upcoming real-time tutorial.

NOTE: A fully narrated tutorial featuring this same Gouldin Finch, paired with orchids and lush greenery is available for Tier 2 and Tier 3 members: https://www.patreon.com/posts/finch-birds-pt-1-129460809

Love it so much that now I’m also painting orchids with granulating paints. And ordered new Holbein granulating ones

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you again so much for the beautiful flower references—they’re absolutely inspiring! 🌸 I’m definitely in a “granulating phase” myself these past few months. Let me know how you’re liking Holbein so far—and if you happen to discover any gems in the blue/violet range… ahem… not that I need more paints, but you know how it goes 😉🎨

Jojo

I saw they have beautiful pink that splits with yellow. I will update you on the blue/violet ones. I started to mix quin rose from qor with tundra violet from schmincke and I’m loving it!

Dear Anna, i have a question: do you know of any gold granulating watercolor? I am painting in watercolors a window frame which surrounds a stained glass. The frame looks like gold leaf on wood that has aged and has little brown specks. Do you have any advice ? Than You 🙏

These are stunning, as usual. The lesson on the yellow roses inspired me to go to the shop and buy some rose bushes to plant in my garden! I'm really not sure how Kansas is going to treat floribunda roses, but I will send you some images once they bloom! Sadly they're not really yellow, kind of a creamy peach leaning yellow heart centered inside of a coral red layer of outer petals. Really unusual, so we bought those instead. Now I have to keep them alive until next spring!

Hi Ana! Thank you so much for your lovely message—and what a beautiful subject to paint! For a granulating gold effect, I’d recommend exploring earthy yellows and ochres, which tend to have some gentle texture. One of my go-tos is Gold Ochre from Winsor & Newton—it’s slightly granulating and gives a warm, aged look that could work beautifully for a weathered gold frame. Another interesting option is Quinacridone Gold—I have one from QoR that I really enjoy. It's not granulating, but it has a lovely warm glow and layers nicely over textured underwashes. If you're after strong, visible granulation, I’d suggest checking out Schmincke’s super granulating series - the swatches are really good on their website. I haven’t personally tested their yellows yet, but Volcano Yellow looks promising and might give you the effect you're aiming for. And just a gentle reminder: if you ever have questions, the best way to reach me is through Patreon Direct Messages, as comments can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. I’d love to make sure I don’t miss you! Thank you! Anna 🌟
