This is an ad-free version of my latest video, where I walk you through 12 of my favorite and most essential watercolor greens — with clear swatches, real examples of how each green behaves on paper, and plenty of practical mixing ideas.

Greens can completely change your watercolor work — whether you’re painting lush botanicals, believable landscapes, tropical birds, or moody shadowy foliage. And yes, you can mix green… but you can’t always mix every green you might need. This guide will help you understand which greens are worth having as dependable “convenience” colors, which ones granulate for gorgeous texture, and which ones glaze cleanly without turning muddy — so you can build a palette that actually fits your style.

As a bonus, I’ve also prepared a downloadable handout with all the swatches and my favorite usage notes, so you can keep it as a handy reference while you paint 👉 download the PDF file in this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/essential-greens-149084955

The first two single pigment greens listed have the same description. Typo?

Anna, in your petal-shaped palettes, how do you keep track of which green is which? I love the idea of having one for each color family (reds, greens, etc) but I’m afraid I would never be able to remember what I put where!!

Gwyneth Anderson

I use the petal palettes as well. I have a paper with a list of all the colors around the circle- last is the center. And I mark the beginning with a red permanent marker on the edge of the starting well. I've gotten used to most of the ones I use frequently and don't have to check all the time. It works for me and I really like having color families together.

What is the next colour? Love, love, love this series

Hello all, I’m looking for the QOR phthalo yellow green. Should that be Daniel Smith? I’m unable to find it under QOR. Thanks.

Rhonda

Oops just found it. It said D.S. In the description, but QOR on the chart. Sorry to bother…

Hi Anna! completely a different topic from the video but if you need suggestions for another topic I would love to suggest, how do you approach painting a black cat with all the intricate fur details? Thank you I would love to paint my boyfriends cat but I struggle with thinking of how I will approach it.

Anna Bucciarelli

What a fantastic subject - black cats are so gorgeous ! The main thing is to observe the lighting really carefully and figure out what the “black” is actually doing in your reference: does the fur read more bluish/cool in the highlights, or reddish/warm (especially in indoor light)? From there, I’d start with a soft underpainting using those undertones (very diluted), focusing on the big value shapes first - not the fur details. Once that base is dry, you can build the fur slowly in layers, keeping your darkest darks for the very end. Also - the Toucan tutorial from last year should actually give you some helpful ideas for underpainting black subjects in particular. The approach is similar, but instead of feathers, you’d use a small brush and add lots of little fur details gradually (and only where they really matter). Hope this helps! PS: I need to do a cat tutorial eventually:))))
