🎨 Welcome to Watercolor Foundations, Episode 2! This is part of our new series of foundational exercises to help you practice essential techniques and brushstrokes in a stress-free way, using your favorite supplies. The time you spend here pays off in every painting you make afterwards!

💧 Today, we're practicing wet-on-damp - one of the most beautiful watercolor techniques, sitting right in between the classic wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry, and giving you a wonderful effect of softly faded strokes without the colors fully blending into each other. It's an essential technique for botanical art, but also for a variety of other subjects, including painting water and waves (which we will practice as part of the session).

To master this technique, we need to carefully observe how quickly your paper is drying. This will be unique to your favorite paper brand, but also your climate. For a large portion of the session, I'll be using a timer, and we'll practice basic strokes on different sections of paper drying at different time intervals. This will teach you to observe and track drying times, and help you learn more about water control.

Download the outlines below, or simply draw a grid of rectangles and a couple of common shapes like a leaf, a petal, and a starfish, grab your favorite brushes and pigments, and let's spend some time learning about your watercolor paper. ⏳

🐠 If you'd like to see wet-on-damp applied in a real painting, check out our latest Betta Fish (Tiers 2 & 3): 👉 https://www.patreon.com/AnnaBucciarelli/posts/betta-fish-wet-1-165855771 or try Blue Orchids (Tiers 2 & 3), one of our most popular tutorials using this method: 👉 https://www.patreon.com/posts/78657273

🧩 In the previous session, we practiced edges - specifically the Puzzle Method: sequencing washes of different colors to achieve crisp edges and seamless color blocks. You can see it here: https://www.patreon.com/AnnaBucciarelli/posts/watercolor-1-164747032

🦚 Coming up next: essential techniques for painting bird feathers, alongside a bigger composition featuring a Peacock that puts it into practice.

🎨 WATERCOLOR MATERIALS

Today, I'm using 100% cotton, cold-pressed paper, because this technique works best on this type of surface. I recommend using your favorite cotton cold-pressed paper, or papers, to learn more about the drying time on the surface you work on most.

I'm using a mix of non-granulating watercolors today, and I encourage you to use whatever you reach for most - the more contrast, the better. Similarly for brushes, try all your favorites - you'll learn a lot about how they behave with the wet-on-damp technique, even ones you've had for years. I'll work through a mix of rounds and flats, but you don't need the same ones.

Amazing! Will do this in a few hours after work 😍 just what ive been thinking I need to work on

Anna Bucciarelli

Yay, I'm so glad the timing works out for you! 😍 I think you'll discover lots of things about your own paper as you go through it. The first row is quite basic, but I think that's what makes it so good - it's really about getting used to the timing and the different stages of dampness before anything else. I incorporated the water technique in there too, and even though I don't usually paint seascapes myself, it's super useful for that kind of subject matter. And although I didn't explicitly include fur in this one... wet-on-damp is purrrfect for cat hair 🐾😉 (had to) Enjoy it after work - can't wait to hear what you notice!

😂 ill tell vara im practicing for her painting! Well I found out my biggest issue around dry time qasnt actually entirely my fault. The bockingford cold pressed cotton 300gsm paper i was using isnt actually cotton 😡 just knowingly mislabeled in australasia. When I tried this I got 1 min before it was too dry to paint on no matter how much I wet it. So started researching. Returned it all to the shop and using actually cotton paper now 😅 big improvement!

Katie Anagnostos

I used Arches Cold Pressed 300 gsm. My paper was dry in less than 6 minutes. I could extend it another minute by soaking it. Painting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mark

Such a brilliant session. I love the music in the background. Makes it very relaxing. Thank you.

Anna Bucciarelli

Ahhhh Thank you Mark! I used to play piano - it's a lot of fun finding different tracks for these videos:)

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you for sharing Katie - this is interesting. I do know mine also dries out a lot faster in the winter (when we have heating turned on) I must repeat some of these tests in like January to compare!!! I bet it will be closer to your timing on the same block of Arches.

Christine Mayo Powers

Fantastic. Thank you ☺️ makes so much sense to test the paper in my own climate. I’d wager each season will have different drying times too as the heat is on or the a/c etc. Thank you very much

Mark

Worked on this yesterday. Quite pleased with the result. The water section needs more work. This is the first time I have tried this. So it’s a case of learning a new technique. I use Baohong academy water colour paper both the cold press and rough. 300 gsm 100% cotton. Drying time. Was between 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 minutes. Will try this again in the summer when the ambient temperature will much hotter. I live in Perth in Western Australia! Thanks 😀

Tracey

I’m not using Arches, but my paper was also dry by 6 minutes.

Ginger

Hi Anna, What a plethora of learning video's, thank you. Is the best next video for practicing these techniques, the Peacock painting? I did so-so, on the last few segments and waiting on my smaller brushes. I want to make sure I practice these new techniques as I go. Is the Beta Fish best or the Peacock?

Beth

Does it matter if you stretch your paper first?

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Beth, Great question! I don’t have enough experience to give you a definitive answer here, since I never stretch my paper myself (I opt for painting on pre-stretched blocks instead mostly to save time). That said, my gut feeling is that it should work just fine, as long as you start with a completely dry surface and follow the same technique. I’d be really curious to hear what you find if you give it a try, so please let me know how it goes! Happy Painting! Anna. P.S.
