Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy - re:View

Jay and Josh discuss the first and final feature film from Canadian comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall...Brain Candy! From the director of the beloved classic film National Lampoon's Senior Trip. Is the movie as bad as its reputation????

Oh good, new RLM right when I'm having some bad anxiety and needed a pick me up. Thanks guys.

Amanda Foster

First!! I remember the kids in the hall existing but I’ve never sat down to watch a full episode. Now I wanna watch all the things lol

Damon Killian

Kids in the Hall is a scary title nowadays.

Jim Tea

Finally!

Jamie Harrold

Fantastic, can't wait for this one. Love KITH but I've never actually sat down and watched Brain Candy. I think it's cos we had a guy in our high school called Brian Candy, and he was a bit of a dick.

Jay picked re:views are the best! (Although I'm still baffled why no Cronenberg ones)

Benway23

Thank you for your work.

It's great to have someone review this and (hopefully) bring some new viewers to this hidden gem, but I must admit to being disappointed that you guys didn't review the new series almost at all, especially considering how phenomenal it was. I know I've said it in these comments sections before, but I was just blown away by the excellence on display in their new material. It was just as silly at times, and yet more mature; just as hilarious on the surface, but often working on a deeper level than the original series as well; and it had that warm feeling of nostalgia, without actually rehashing their old material (except for a handful of skits with old characters, most of whom had grown themselves). Does anybody remember when Mr. Show came back? No? That's because it was terrible; I mean really, really bad. It's always terrible when these shows come back, and yet they made it work and, dare I say, made something even better than their original series. Of course, that's just my humble opinion, and I'm sure plenty of fans will prefer their original work, but I can't imagine a single fan being in any way disappointed with the new series.

Marvin: What I find remarkable about Wayne's World is that the director... Detective Ted Cooper: ...is a woman?... Space Cop: ...wasn't murdered? Marvin: No, you idiots! For Penelope Spheeris directing Wayne's World was a director-for-hire job, to make money so that she could work on her own documentary projects. She was perfect for the job, because she had directed Heavy Metal music videos, and was part of the Heavy Metal scene depicted in Wayne's World. And she listened to her co-workers, like Mike Myers, when she thought the comedy wouldn't work. Penelope Spheeris seems to be a friendly person like David Lynch. Cooper: What? No thank you for this re:View, just your own somewhat random thoughts you associate with a brief mention of Wayne's World?... Space Cop: ...yeah, or something topical on Kids in the Hall and Brain Candy? Marvin: Thank you Jay and Josh for this re:View. Kids in the Hall and Brain Candy are completely new to me. I had only heard about both of them in one of the last Half in the Bag's. I recently watched Robocop for the first time ever, and it looks to me like Brain Candy and Robocop have this in common, the satirical look at corporations. Cooper: Wow, that's all you got, right?! Space Cop: I'm going to the Titty bar, Candy's stripping. Marvin: Fuck both of you.

I can't believe I didn't see that one coming!

Shouts out to Josh for the Todd Rundgren shirt. It took me a minute or two to realize what it was. The man has great taste in music.

Anne

Thank you so much for this one! They did a live reading of 'Brain Candy' at a comedy festival in Toronto a few years prior to the pandemic, and to this day it's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen live. I really appreciate your choice to focus on this one!

Carly

Hope you guys are staying safe and well ❤️

Josh always has the coolest shirts

Jay should do a Re:View of Cube

Dirrdevil

I need to check this out. I used to watch the original show as a kid. Completely unaware of their movie until Jay mentioned on HitB.

My "funny" story about National Lampoon's Senior Trip is that I recognized the fat guy in the clip. His name is Eric Edwards. He had a decent career as "the fat guy" in comedies. Then he kinda realized that he was endangering his health and lost weight which obviously wasn't great for his career. I met him at LA Open Mics where he'd tell his weight loss story. This was late nineties, early 00's. I didn't realize how good his career was until he got introduced as having played Private Doberman in Sgt Bilko (Steve Martin movie). I hadn't seen the movie but I knew from the show what a major role that was.

Mike Ayres

I'm disappointed that neither of them commented on the obvious Glenn Danzig satire in the club scene.

Jay what's up with the jump cuts at 11:52 and 31:23 what's going on here what's happening are you okay

I must have watched this a hundred times back in the day. An all time favourite.

It's always an enjoyable Re:View when Josh and Jay talk about weird films they enjoy. Like when Rich and Mike get together you know Star Trek is going to get discussed. Jay and Josh talk about the obscure and weird cult films that I enjoy.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who had a love for this when it came out. My brothers and I used to quote, “Where’s your father? He’s upstairs masterbating to gay porn.” Then my father came out later in my life. Life imitating art is weird.

Did you have to handcuff him. He insisted Mam.

But they made Mud Gum. Their product was bad, their thinking was wrong. It was Mud Gum!

Has Mike nothing to say about the Canadian character actor groupie from "Cube"...? Huh, Mike... huh... ... huh...? Mike...?

My only mission is to get RLM to do the Re:View of The Blues Brothers! So close 👀

Autumn Fischer

I forgot that I say "...DOGS KNOW IT!" from this movie!!

I like the drug name "Gleemonex" - so it basically means 'Happy Monies'

I just watched this last night. I thought it was gonna suck, but it didn't. It could have been 40 minutes long, but I still liked it. Yaay!
