Half in the Bag: Spin Me Round and Nope

There comes a time in every two man's lives when they take a bunch of Glembezza, get super old, do an opening bit that goes on way too long, then watch two films on streaming. That time is then! Jay and Mike talk about two floms they watched weeks ago! Why aren't they talking about movies in the theater? Welp, I looked to see what was playing in the theater and it was: The Muppet Movie from 1974, some kid shit, something called "Honk for Jesus, Jaws from 1977, and some Teen romance film. Yes, the movie theaters are truly dead. They'll fill the screen with literally anything! Why go to a disgusting nightmare-world where you sit in other people's trash to see The Muppet Movie? So Jay and Mike watch two films of very good quality on streaming as they do and review them. Movies truly are magical. Tune in next week when Mike gets an illegal broadcast on his TV by the toynbee tiles guy who is currently broadcasting Clown Doll on all frequencies. This nightmare we call life will never end until it does.

A breathe of fresh air!! Stuff to watch after my long ass day with a stubborn potty training 3 1/2 year old. My days not over yet but at least I have something to look forward to! Thanks RLM dudes for the entertainment to fill my tedious days

Mike St Louis

Ex-cellent! And I even saw one of these films!

I am really enjoying g the HitB framing device - Mike Plinkett & Jay Plinkett are like two characters you would meet in a movie at a Best Buy trying to buy typewriter ribbons and a new tube for their radio. Jay making a call on the remote was a great touch ☺️

I haven’t finished watching the episode, but it is a tossup of who edited this by the time I got the the Panera bread soup story. Jay lets Mike luxuriate in his stories, whereas Mike likes to make fun of himself (mic noise, cutaway Jay). This is a real tossup so far…

Capulet

Jay seemed a lil... worried? at the end. Mike has been a bit sour and quick to get off set lately... :-/

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Also, Grizzly Man was amazing. Werner Herzog is one interesting dude. He either makes something brilliant, or something brilliantly dull. He's at his best when he's documenting the human condition (I know I'm not saying anything new with that).

Mike as an old man looks like an aging former rock star from like the late 70s early 80s and is trying to restart his career or is traveling with one other original member of his group but like the rest is just like studio musicians in their like 30s or 40s but they’re still going by their original name playing mainly state fairs and casinos. Jay just looks like an old man.

Ethan Husted

If you didn't catch it, Michael Wincott is playing Werner Herzog basically.

Very good. Mike is correct, it is absolutely like the Crystalline Entity. Also, Jay has really helped me interpret Nope in a different way. I enjoyed the explanation of the bond between Yuen and the Chimpanzee. In addition, I never viewed Us like a Nightmare. That really works.

RE: The "Real life incident" (Not that I am saying this is a negative, nor am I outraged by the usage in the movie). "Although it hasn’t been confirmed as a direct inspiration, Gordy’s attack in the Nope flashback is likely loosely based on the true story of Travis, a real-life chimpanzee who went on a violent rampage. Having been purchased and taken from his mother at just three days old, Travis soon became an animal actor, making guest appearances in television shows and commercials for brands like Coca Cola and Old Navy. His owners, Sandra and Jerome Herold, had a deep emotional attachment to him, and Sandra Herold even slept with him in the same bed. Travis had a local reputation for being careful and well-behaved among humans, having been socialized to do so his entire life - but in 2009, Travis infamously attacked and mauled Charla Nash, one of Herold’s close friends, severely disfiguring her in the process."

Mike St Louis

Mike. You appear to be familiar with The Office(US) but have never watched a single episode of Community? I wish it were the other way around. Community is very good. Except season 4. From the mind of Dan Harmon. Co-creator of Rick & Morty.

Casey Shermer

Mike looking like Cameron Mitchell in the thumbnail.

Oh Rich already colored it, well fine. I really really loved Nope and I'm glad you guys liked it too! Honestly I think some of the horror was very visceral, e.g. the people going through the digestive tract, the blood raining on the house (my favorite shot of the whole film), all the chimp stuff of course. And those screams, absolutely haunting. I'd agree that it's about showbusiness, spectacle and the exploitation of trauma, the treatment of humans and animals as commodities within the Hollywood system, the expectation that you push yourself past your limit and give everything just for the sake of entertainment, and broader than that, for the sake of capital. There's stuff about old Westerns and American idealism, the erasure of black artists in there too. Definitely a wider scope than his previous films, but it's probably my favorite of the three. Spin Me Round looks right up my alley for the same reasons as Mike listed. I'll have to check it out this weekend.

Eric Sharpe

Look again at the poster for “Nope.” The one which features the three characters. That’s not a cowboy hat on Yeun’s head.

I still don’t get why, when the alien only spares people who avert their eyes, our lead guy is able to make eye contact in the final show down and survive - did I miss something? Isn’t that in direct contradiction to the Gordy cautionary tale? I’m gonna go watch Clown Doll now.

Jackie Brown is my favorite Tarantino movie, too. I kinda get that "I hate people" attitude, it seems like very intelligent people who feel cursed to see the world very clearly, and who understand that they can't do anything about that, and who are idealistic about how the world should be, are prone to develop that attitude. Since I love the English language, I started to read English books, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of them. I ordered Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, I got the The Complete Works of William Shakesman here (and hope to not have to pull out the dictionary every sentence), I got Jane Eyre, and one day, when the book has finally been written, I want to read Pride and Predator, which someone in the comment section of the Prey Half in the Bag recommended. Meanwhile, I'm preparing for blackouts and empty shelves. [cut to: Laura Palmer's doppelganger in the Red Room screaming and walking towards the camera, then cut to: me sitting apathetically like Rich Evans' doppelganger watching TV, waiting for something to happen] ;-)

Steve Webber

Tim Heidecker was amazing live. I hope you guys get a chance to see him perform. Love that you guys are fans.

Randal Smith

Please do a half in the bag on Barbarian. It’s this years malignant

Nope was not even about ufos and it's the best ufo movie since close encounters.

I have watched the movies "A Ciambra" and "A Chiara" on MUBI last week or so. Besides that the subject matter of these particular movies might not be interesting to everybody, they're the kind of movies MUBI shows regularly: movies everybody is able to relate to, which give the viewer insight into a specific area of life, and which do social commentary without lecturing you or hitting you on the head with it. So maybe, if you're searching for Feminist movies and movies on LGBTQ+, then MUBI might be the place for you to look. I assume that MUBI is easier to access than for instance Amazon Prime. and I assume that the movies they offer are available worldwide, as opposed to for instance Amazon Prime.

Mike

I really liked NOPE. I had the same feelings as Jay that the movie was really about how "hollywood" is a monster that takes and destroys. The horse farm has been part of films since the beginning, but then this monster kills off the father (and the farm) with pocket change. The monster in the final form looks like a movie camera. There is much more to dig into, but it has been a while that I think about a film critically and read into subtexts. But also Invasion USA is my favorite movie.

geekay

Thanks for making me hate both Panera and Olive Garden you guys !

I just watched the documentary on Unmasking the Idol on the new VInega Syndrome BD. Soo much info about Boon. How he stocked the actor playing Duncan jacks while he was running on the beach and started doing push-ups in front of him as he was “at his sexual peak”. He lived with his trainer, he used to take him on his motorcycle to get french fries in the McDonald’s drive-through and freak out the people there . I personally believe that vinegar syndrome may be putting out order of the Black Eagle in 4K, which point we will get all her answers regarding the tank, As well as the best possible look at the head squish

*wipes away tear* I love that my Patreon contributions over the years have lead to Mike and Jay's amazing wigs and beard frostings. I'm honoured and I'm happy to do it.

andrew

The alien design reminds me of an angel from Evangelion.

Bleachedblackcat

Working in a chain food place right now, the opening just has me nodding and going "Yep. Yep. Eh not sure if gross enough."

AllGoodNamesRGone

I can't figure out who Mike in that wig reminds me of... I want to say an older George Harrison.

"Spin Me Round" had me cracking up hysterically. Thank you guys for recommending that one. Never would have given it a shot if it weren't for the review. In a weird way, it kind of had a "Meet the Parents" vibe to it, only much smarter and good subtext throughout. A+ 👌
