Mike's review of Triangle was spot on. This could have have tied with Menu as my movie of the year if it had been edited down by 30 minutes or so

Amanda Foster

Yay got somethin new to watch while my kid takes her nap! Will I watch it? Mmm, not right away I may rewatch the SOS wheel of the Worst for the billionth time lol. Either way this video is getting viewed by me! You guys are awesome! Edit: not that anyone was wondering or asked but if I had to choose between Harry Styles or Mike Stoklasa, I’d pick Mike every single time!

benoles20

i havent looked yet but im assuming the batman is on there?

Lelio Mulas

I like what you did with the house.

David Dean

I hope you guys review Megan. Another Blumhouse masterpiece.

James Quinn

Horror is low hanging fruit- FEAR is the most basic universal emotion easiest to exploit, cheapest to make cheap and therefore most profitable with minimal investment. Don’t need big name actors, or big money production, on all levels of filmmaking process. Don’t even have to spend a whole lot on the lighting! Just keep it dark for “mood.” Having said that, I’m going to see M3GAN today in hopes she replaces “Chucky” who they’ve played out, worn out to death. Holy shit! I’m sick of that doll. Remember Child’s Play 1&3? I only liked those.

James Quinn

Is Sex Pervert Jay going to review WifeLike or not? THATS the Stepford Wives he should have watched, not Don't Worry Darling

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

I didn't see the last few posts in time to comment, but i just want to say thank you SO much for donating to animal welfare! As someone who has worked at and regularly donates to local animal shelters across the country, this is very heartwarming to me. People really don't understand the scale and scope of homeless animals in this country. Many of them are former pets that were adopted as kittens/puppies, knew nothing but a joyous life of running around and being loved, and are now confined to a cage in which the can barely stand for reasons they'll never know or understand. Almost nobody adopts adult cats/dogs, so that terrible new life is all they'll get until they die. Which reminds me: if anyone out there is considering adopting a pet, please consider adopting an *adult* cat/dog! They will be so grateful, and you will be adopting an animal that would likely spend the rest of its life in misery without your help. You can save an innocent life, and enjoy many wonderful years of adorability, fun, and affection with them by doing it! It's all upside! This ends my little spiel. I'm sorry, but the issue came up, and I always feel the need to promote adopting adult animals (and reminding people of the responsibility that they have to their pets, but I left that out for the sake of attempted, if not attained, brevity). Thanks for your charity work, boys!

I wonder if we’ll get a Licorice Pizza review in Part II

Kurt

Thanks, guys! This is a good video to watch while I'm sick. It reminds me that society is also diseased and that movies like to talk about it. You make it a lot more fun than watching the news, too.

Michael Parker

Mike looks thrilled with 2022’s cinematic output.

Cody Hall

I know it won't be on a video but what did you guys think of Better Call Saul's final season?

Joshua Mannix

I much preferred Knives Out over Glass Onion. The latter's twist taking up most of the 2nd act of the movie was just too much.

gymcat100

Except nepotism as it relates to screen writing.

Marvin Falz

I think it's likely that the term "nepotism" is part of a double standard. No idea where that double standard originated, but if it is one I'd bet it originated in the political sphere. Why? Because it's usually the political sphere where terms are weaponised. For example, if people demonstrate for their freedoms politicians in the same country call them all sorts of defaming terms, but if people in another country do the same thing the aforementioned politicians praise them. I know that "referialism" isn't a word, but I guess that word would be the positive equivalent of "nepotism." You know someone who's good at something and you refer them to someone else who needs the service the first someone is offering. That's how the film business is working. What's bad about that? (Spoilers: nothing.)

mild glass onion spoilers as a fan of 'cozy' murder mysteries-- a subgenre of murder mysteries with a cheerful tone that are not horror or thrillers-- it sucks that rian johnson is the best living director of big budget cozies. kenneth branagh lost his touch and most of what the BBC puts out these days is... I think the kids call it 'mid.' I feel like I have to defend glass onion to the death just because it's the best we've got. It is a pure distillation of a christie mystery that was written for the modern age. which is to say a convoluted plot, blatant red herrings, and stock characters with theatrical dialogue. the seemingly dumb blonde ex-model/actress in particular is a christie staple. the only thing that makes it non-christie is that it's not elon being murdered, which it would be if she'd written it. which I think is a meta subversion of expectations (yeah, I know) for mystery fans, and also reflects on the classism present in most murder mysteries of the golden age, particularly christie mysteries. so... pure rian johnson, basically. like 'oh really, mysteries primarily written by landed gentlewomen in the 20s and 30s were classist? what a clever boy you are for noticing'. but then... cozies are blunt and stupid genre fiction, so maybe all that's fine... but shit, action movie are blunt and stupid too, and there are still directors out there who can elevate them. I wish johnson could get there. excited to check out white lotus now though, very grateful for the recommendation.

Star Track references are my 'fireworks factory'. Sooooo satisfying

Peter Varga

But have you noticed that Joaquin Phoenix plays Mike in the Beau Is Afraid trailer?

Ed Mijares

I cannot wait until they talk about Avatar 2 and Mike inevitably talks about Star Trek 4, and Jay looks at the camera, that's all I want from that review.

Rhea

Mike just because you're friends with Jack Quaid and he's a decent actor doesn't mean he isn't by definition a nepo baby, also "acting genetics" Jesus Christ what a take

DonMac

In "Glass Onion" with the 'idiot who thinks he's a genius' plot-point, I was reminded more of Rian Johnson than Elon Musk

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

I found The Menu to be relentlessly pretentious, but that only made me dislike it, rather than hate it. I really liked the concept! I just felt like the execution needed at least some hint of subtlety. I love movies with social commentary, but The Menu is so far up its own ass that it feels like you're watching goatse inf it was made for critics' approval. There were so many times that I instinctively rolled my eyes because of how blunt it was, and how the writer didn't seem to trust the audience to understand the metaphor (which is barely even a metaphor). Basically Glass Onion, but with the social commentary turned up to eleven and a much more interesting overall concept, design, and execution that saved it from being awful. EDIT: Also, I hated that they had Ralph Fiennes doing an American accent. The accent was perfectly fine, of course, but he's a famous chef. There was just no reason to take away his accent, and I love him in so many things (especially In Bruges! Talk about two directors who can do subtle and brilliant commentary on a level of almost nobody else currently: the McDonagh brothers).

Incredible Egghead

I thought that Knives Out was far superior to its sequel. Nevertheless I also enjoyed Glass Onion. To me these films are above all fun murder mysteries. Yes, they feature goofy, rich characters but that just part of this classic whodunnit setting. They’re not yelling: „Look at us, we’re social commentary!“ At least that’s how I see it. The Menu however did exactly that. „Look! I‘m satire. I’m smart, I’m relevant.” And that I found quite pretentious and annoying. I did enjoy the film because of the great performances and the wonderful direction. The writing though… was okay at best.

Michael Parker

So I was right in my prediction that we'd get full thoughts on X and Pearl. I'm glad you guys really liked The Menu. That was one of my favorites from last year as well. Because you didn't talk about Knives Out before I thought maybe you'd written off Rian Johnson cause of how the Last Jedi turned out, but at least not Jay apparently. I enjoyed Glass Onion.

Javier Mancilla

Damn, I hope one of Mike's television catch ups is Better Call Saul. He did say Breaking Bad was "basically the best show ever" so he definitely has seen Better Call Saul.

John Walters

The Menu is, in spirit, a Neil Breen movie.

AllGoodNamesRGone

Hey, thanks for addressing the nepo babies thing. I was kinda curious about your thoughts given Jack Quaid was on the show. He was really great with you guys. Doesn't seem like he fit the title, "nepo baby", in the negative sense.

Kyeran441

Glad you saw the first two movies in the X trilogy. I can’t wait for MaXXXine.

Amy Nelson

Excellent episode. Thank you guys 😊

Rhea

Okay I finished watching it, I agree with Rian Johnson's humor not being nearly smart enough for the types of movies he's been making but I don't think Knives Out and Glass Onion needed to be meaner, I kind of appreciated how lighthearted and campy they were. Idk, they were fun movies that I'll never watch again. Gonna recommend Succession as another very well written rich-people-being-terrible show, and Black Bear because Aubrey Plaza. Also The Banshees of Inisherin which has no rich people but does have a miniature donkey named Jenny.

Michael Parker

Also I appreciated getting a little bit of a “fuck you it’s forever!” bit at the beginning. Although the recent critical and commercial success of the robot doll movie M3gan suggests the days of “fuck you it’s January!” might be no more.

Juan Calvo

It's almost as if we were on an economic crisis and our friend Hollywood wanted to tell the average middle class streamer subscriber that rich people are bad.

thisguy

Mike’s nepotism take is genuinely the worst opinion I’ve ever heard from RLM. To suddenly defend such a terrible practice bc now he’s friends with a nepo baby is super disappointing.

David Vass

For someone who rightfully rips Sandler's way of making movies (family and friends), or who pointed out the horrible nepotism of the Smith family in the After Earth review, and for guys who seem to support and understand the struggle of simple "working actors", your guys take on nepotism was truly baffling. It seemed shallow and weirdly defensive and the analogies did not work at all. This was such a horrible, poorly thought out and dismissive take that I was surprised it didn't get cut.

David S

Drinking a Bierzeit from Lakefront Brewery, I see. I’ve been meaning to try one of those.

andrew

Mike on the left, Jay on the right, please.

Billy Thompson

Great ep! Triangle of Sadness would be best viewed in a packed theater, we were howling at this one. And Mike didn't mention one of the best parts- a very long scene of absurd schadenfreude that Johnny Knoxville and Co. could take notes from.

andrew

The whole time I was thinking…”when will Mike mention ‘The Game’?”

Carly

Hey fellas. Absolutely loved this ep and have started The White Lotus S2 on Mike's recommendation (seeing as I adored Severance following his rec!). Just wanted to give a heads up that with Justin Roiland facing felony DV charges you may wish to edit or private the Jayus Ex Mikeina video.

David van Reyk

Apropos to nothing: if a BOTW Post Holocaust episode is in the wings: Robot Holocaust, 1987, Directed by Tim Kincaid. If your appetite needs whetting: there is a tunnel of the killer sock puppets.

Damon Killian

It's my mother's 70deth Birthday today, and I downloaded The Menu from a reputable streaming service, for which I paid for with real currency. She said, that was as a 'Damon movie' for sure. Well, she she really enjoyed it, and the Mahi fish tacos. So, thanks for the recommendation RLM!

DonMac

Ti West being so influenced by '70s/early-'80s movies, I suspect that the upcoming sequel to 'X' and 'Pearl' called 'MaXXXine' will be strongly influenced by the 1979 movie 'Hardcore' starring George C. Scott. That movie had a strict traditionalist father looking for his daughter, who ran away from home and was now in the porn industry. 'MaXXXine' could easily be a virtual remake.

The Real Zam

Where is part II? Either someone's getting lazy or the copyright robot strikes again.
