Mars Attacks - re:Visit

Hacks attack Mars Attacks! The Tim Burton flop that people kinda sort of remember because the aliens are funny. Here's a few previous re:View episodes that also fit the concept of re:Visit: The Garbage Pail Kids Movie: https://youtu.be/dRCOSZEtREI Enemy Mine: https://youtu.be/BuIemfjmIak Event Horizon: https://youtu.be/jm0aYVYJrfQ Ice Pirates: https://youtu.be/1fXACfkyvLc Spacehunter: https://youtu.be/eTeLD5KVtHE Cabin Fever: https://youtu.be/7uSkQq3NbO8

Is re:visit replacing re:view??

Davidhidekazu

Mike committing a cardinal sin by asking Jay to have a haircut

Jeremy W

Picard being good broke the re:view franchise.

sacch

Don't listen to him Jay, we love your hair

Adam Atom Ant

I loved this movie a lot more than RLM did.

Amanda Foster

What a wonderful way to wake up! So excited to watch this!

InMyLastBreaths

Mike tell Jay to get off your lawn *shakes fist

Manuel Johnen

I swear, if you don't shit on this nonstop for 52 minutes, I'm gonna vomit, you "Event Horizon" hating hobos...

Eileen Herbert

Joe Don Baker playing Jack Black’s father is PERFECT casting, you have to admit.

AshesBoomstick

I just got a haircut 6 hours ago. It was about as long as Jay's. I hope Mike would approve of my new haircut. Which is kinda like Mike's haircut. Oh, "Mars Attacks!"? OK then... uhm. Sure. :)

run_away

I think someone's reaction to this film is going to vary a lot with how old you were when you first saw it. That's true for all films obviously, but for this one in specific the horror elements that are clearly comedy for adults are genuinely disturbing for children. Exploded heads etc. And yet the visual tone is bright and campy so it looks like a child-friendly movie. I saw this when I was eight and it legitimately gave me nightmares, and the fact that my dad was laughing hysterically contributed to my fear lol.

madmanpecos

freddy got fingered isn’t in the description as a re:visit. this means it’s a great movie on the same tier as ghostbusters and tremors

Jeremy Heynen

Mars Attacks! is Tim Burton's Plan 9 From Outer Space. Right before this he made Ed Wood and this was his own Ed Wood film. Problem being, nobody understood this so the studio did not know how to market it. Plan 9 has more charm though as it was made sincerely while this is just cynical.

Michael Puttré

No, it was cynical. That's why it wasn't funny. It was mean and cynical. I saw it in the theater and never saw it again. I like cynical in small amounts, like seasoning. This was all cynical seasoning. I know you guys don't like Independence Day, which is really just good fun. But compare with Starship Troopers, which was satire, cynical, veiled humor, and also good fun.

Douglas Scott

After I saw this in the theater, I felt like maybe my 26 year old self wasn't savvy enough to understand it, because I found it flat and boring. I've been doubting myself ever since. Turns out it's flat and boring. What could have been...

DonMac

re:View is now re:Visit? So instead of going back to view an old movie again, they're going back to visit an old movie again? What's the difference here?

Amanda Foster

I’ve been bitten by the “but what about!” bug! Like Jay said this is Burtons downfall, but what about Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, and Sweeney Todd? I’ll give you Alice in Wonderland cuz that was awful lol

Dafydd Brooks

This is my evening sorted , cheers Chaps :)

Andrew Stickman

I was 11 or so when I saw it in the theaters and thought everything was just silly, especially the Martians; their talking, overall look, suits and laser guns. As an adult, the martians gaunt skull-like faces look more terrifying to me. The only thing I somewhat laughed at on my rewatch was the visual of Pierce Brosnan’s head talking to Sarah Jessica Parker on a dog body. Guessing that was an attempt at lampooning sex symbols? Maybe on my next rewatch of it in 10 years I’ll switch my TV color setting to black-and-white and see if that changes my viewing experience.

Renus Dewberry

Love from the South, you hippy tubs!

Goldy Loxx

I agree with almost all of this and I love Mars Attacks for these reasons.

Seano O'Reilly

Jay, either release a plan for your hair to the public or return to sexy short back and sides

Marvin Falz

Mars Attacks looks intriguing and at the same time uninteresting. I will probably watch it one day. Meanwhile I'm trying to get into Dead to Me, allegedly a dark comedy, on Netflix, because I like Christina Applegate. She's a great actress, but in the pilot and episode 1 that's kinda all the show has to offer. Still better than The Irishman and its fucking awkward looking digital de-ageing of the actors' faces, while the actors themselves have no energy and feel out of place. It's like Scorsese wanted to recapture the magic of Goodfellas but didn't realize that old people are not that convincing at pretending to be young and vigorous. Anyway, the re:Visit was good, Mike was on 🔥, and I'm looking forward to the next episode of Red Letter Media. 😎

The Real Zam

RIP Jay's hair stylist. Didn't make it through the pandemic.

The Real Zam

I remember seeing MA in theaters and don't recall what 13yo me thought about it. Encountered it a few times before the mid 00's when I would still randomly tune into movies showing on cable mid film. As a result, I didn't really rewatch the 1st act. This obviously explains why I have mildly fond memories of the film.

Jessie Zimmer

Never get a haircut, Jay. Just to spite Mike. You look nice either way, so it's win/win.

andrew

RLM has too many IPs.

Michael Parker

I'm pretty my Dad has brought up this movie on occasion as one of the worst movies he's ever seen.

Charlie

I had such a fondness for this movie as a kid, warts and all. The vaporizations looked superb on VHS. But yeah, it’s 90% sight gags and (at least for a 10 year old) horrific violence.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

I am shocked and horrified. How did Mike not mention that the translation gibberish scene sounded exactly like the silicon life-form in TNG's Home Soil? "Ugly! Ugly giant bags of mostly water."

Patrick

This movie definitely seems to mark Tim Burton's descent, although he does still have Big Fish and Sweeney Todd after this (I'm a fan of the former more than the latter, but I know a lot of people love Sweeney Todd).

Robert Dodrill

Thank you Mike for pointing out Hollywood's love for giving Midwesterners southern accents, specifically Kansans. It's also like Hollywood filming in places with mountains for Kansas.

Carly

NEITHER of you should cut your hair - give us the luscious locks

Kyle Reitenauer

"Bauman, for the last time, get rid of those sideburns!"

Amy Nelson

Hilarious, excellent episode. Thank you Mike

AllGoodNamesRGone

So you can sell these horribly violent trading cards to kids, but don't show them on youtube. Gotcha, youtube. :/ Sorry you got to go through this again, RLM.

Katy

Huh. I had pretty okay-to-fond memories of the movie, then I rewatched (ok I scrubbed through it) it last night and yeah, it was clearly funny to my twentysomething stoned ass, but here in 2023, does not hold up.

Poo In An Alleyway

Kinda surprised Jay didn’t mention the fact that Leif Jonker, the director, writer, producer, editor and DOP of the 1993 SOV vampire gore-fest DARKNESS was very weirdly the location manager for the Kansas segments of Mars Attacks. It’s such a strange Hollywood connection to randomly see in the closing credits.

Eric Anderson

I’m with Mike and Jay here. I was an absolute Burton fan up until this movie. Everything he was involved in before this was so dang good (including Nightmare Before Christmas).Mars Attacks is so dumb and unimaginative it was shocking. I don’t like any of his films produced afterwards either.

Connor Martin

Sweeney Todd is the last great Tim Burton film.

Top Hat Monkey

I always felt like I should have liked MA more than I did, but the fact I never rewatched it tells the story. It just left me cold. Thanks, hack frauds for the interesting take.

Amanda

Hey Mike, what is the picture on your shirt?
