Half in the Bag: Fool's Paradise and The Corporate Product Biopic Trend

Charlie Day from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia wrote, directed, and starred in a movie that just came out that you've never heard about! Is this gigantic flop as bad as it's Rotten Tomatoes score would suggest? Also WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET THE RUBIX CUBE MOVIE???

👍😎Interested to hear your take on this one!

According to IMDB, the post production offices for 'Fools Paradise' were almost completely powered by Ray Liotta's spinning grave.

I got a mixed bag of news all in the first hour of waking up this morning. This video upload is definitely one of the better things I read this morning. Added note, are those AIDS trading cards??

I recently watched "Blonde" (2022), the Marilyn Monroe biopic on Netflix. I got curious and started to research. I find two characteristics of Marilyn Monroe very interesting: 1) She had willpower and knew exactly what she wanted and wouldn't let her shyness and other personal problems get in the way. 2) She was the second woman in Hollywood (the US movie business) who started her own production company. The first one was Mary Pickford, one of the pioneers of Hollywood, who formed Universal Artists. All my life I thought Marilyn Monroe was just some dumb blonde with an over-exaggerated sex appeal.

Ah, I see you guys have AIDS now...

The water pitcher bouncing back up, but the glass shattering is "inspired" straight from a french 1958 film that follows a silent character in a world full of vapid dialogue, titled "Mon Oncle", which I think probably inspired a good chunk of this film... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE9t98Gox60

There's a solid documentary about the history of Tetris on a YT channel called videogamehistorian. It's an interesting story. I can see how it could be adapted into a film, but I'd think the doc format would be better since there are a lot of business deals involved and not too much action.

Always love when you guys pick a film that isn't a big blockbuster and dissect it. It's even more rare when it's a comedy. As Jay said in the Ghostbusters 2016 HitB, "They're only so many ways to say it just isn't funny." Charlie is an extremely talented comedian, but sounds like he didn't have the bite necessary for satire like this. Which is weird because they've done a couple meta episodes of Always Sunny where they poke at themselves and Hollywood.

Unsurprisingly enough, there was no mention of The Founder in this conversation.

The hack frauds didn't mention Being There, we should send them a sternly worded letter.

Here is my review of the hack internet podcast "Half in The Bag" that I definitely wrote myself: Half in the Bag is a movie review show hosted by two VCR repairmen named Mike Stoklasa and Jay Bauman and broadcasted from the home of one of their customers, Harry S. Plinkett. The show features witty and sarcastic commentary on various films, TV shows and pop culture topics, often with a humorous twist. The hosts also engage in skits, parodies and running jokes that add to the entertainment value of the show. The show has been running since 2011 and has covered a wide range of genres and topics, from blockbuster franchises like Star Wars, Marvel and DC, to indie films, horror movies and documentaries. The hosts are not afraid to express their honest opinions, whether they are positive or negative, and often poke fun at the flaws and clichés of Hollywood filmmaking. They also have a knack for finding obscure and bizarre movies that are worth discussing, such as The Empty Man, Mainstream and Titane. Half in the Bag is a must-watch for movie fans who enjoy witty and insightful reviews that are not afraid to be critical and funny at the same time. The show is also a showcase of the hosts’ creativity and passion for filmmaking, as they often produce their own short films, animations and parodies that are featured on their YouTube channel RedLetterMedia. Half in the Bag is a rare gem of a YouTube series that combines humor, intelligence, and originality in a way that is both entertaining and informative.

Worth noting that the film was largely based around the 1970 Peter Sellers movie “Being There”. Many of your concerns about the satire being unfocused/ineffective are rectified in that film

Jessie Zimmer

This HitB might be favorite just for the Smashmouth pitch, but those "unrelated Ezra Miller" clips made me laugh out loud. Thank you.

Before this, I was gonna ask you guys if you've seen Air directed by Ben Affleck starring Ben Affleck's penis Matt Damon. Thanks for the in-depth review of not Air, Jay! Get a fucking haircut!

Came here to mention ‘Being There’ as a recommendation for those wanting to see a good version of this type of premise. Glad to see it being brought up!

I was hoping that Mike or Jay, or internet superstar Rich Evans, was going to point out that the flamin' hot cheetos guy is a hack fraud. Literally though. He didn't invent them and is taking credit for some lady's invention.

How bout that Beau? Pretty stand up guy. 😉

The Apple Tetris movie is good, but a bit overdramatic. However, it DID get me to watch the much better Gaming Historian documentary on YouTube. I strongly recommend it!

Half in the Bag is Red Letter Media at its BEST!!!!!

God bless all of you, but especially Rich Evans, for unique brand of madness.

After listening to a fair bit of the Always Sunny podcast I think this movie is just stale commentary rather than self-aware meta-satire. Charlie comes across as both very critical of the Hollywood machine and endearingly guileless a lot of the time. I think he just wanted to make a movie about what he has been experiencing and it didn't feel stale to him because he encounters it every day. Also as an avid Always Sunny fan their big swing episodes almost always flop with fans but they don't care because THEY like them.

Michael Puttré

I coasted off RedLetter Media for many years. They helped me through my divorce and I leached off them psychically for many years. When I got myself back on my feet, I thought I would give back and joined Patreon at the $15 level. This was great for a few years, but then I was downsized so I dropped to the $5 level. I still feel a great connection to RLM, but I'm starting to feel that they don't really want to do this anymore. I'll stick with the $5 level out of gratitude and loyalty. But I would like to see a real movie once in awhile.

I like your AIDS awareness trading cards

The irony of the Tetris Biopic movie is that the producer, Lawrence Kasanoff, didn't wanna make a biopic... He wanted and still wants btw, to make a Tetris Movie Trilogy... He has gone on record saying, "It will be the next Lord of the Rings Trilogy". Lawrence Kasanoff btw is responsible for Mortal Kombat 1995... but also it's sequel... and he's responsible for Foodfight, a movie he is quoted as saying, "would be the next Toy Story" and the studio behind Foodfight, Explosm, would be the "next Pixar".
