So…just to make sure I’m clear, you chose to have Kal talk about ‘Sandia’ in that way because no one should know about her actual species? Kinda confusing when he doesn’t even stop or pause to consider the ramifications, but I want to make sure.

Exactly. The only two people who know about Gerda and her sisters would have understood the reason for the deception. I briefly considered putting in a questioning facial expression for Ikuno or Kashka, but it felt out of place as both are more than intelligent enough to get what he was doing and not emote. Also, I figured any such expression would have been picked up on by Ichiro or the others and just lead to more uncomfortable questions.

I'm guessing Kal's revelation about the "reward" for his trial at Prentas' tower has some greater significance to Ikuno than we currently know? Or is she simply just overwhelmed and needs time to process the story Kal has told so far?

I see it as more of a combination of that and him surviving Kithana's trial. Mostly the second. Ikuno is well aware of the dangers of a human channeling too much mana and that Kal could have, and likely should have, exploded during the challenge. I know this analogy won't work for everyone, but imagine for a moment the person you love most in the world doing a handstand on the edge of a cliff... for about an hour. The longest handstand comes in at just over 13 minutes, so this is far beyond what is possible for human endurance. Then, when the person finally safely returns to their feet they look at you and tell you that you just won ten million dollars. This is sort of what Ikuno is going through, and despite her mental resilience, that's a lot to process all at once.
