It can be hard turning thrifted items into something that looks EXPENSIVE but with the right techniques, you can also turn fabulous curtains into treasure!

I really took my time in showing the smaller details that get lost in the pretty pictures and quick short form videos, but are so essential in making something feel and look good. Knowing these tricks in the back of my pocket really helped speed run making this gown in just a week.

USUALLY I allow myself at least 3 mock-ups to perfect the fit, but for the short time frame and multiple front pieces, I only allowed 1. This was only possible with having a perfected bodice and skirt block.

Regardless, there is parts I wish I could have perfected with a second mock-up such as the neckline pieces. I personally wish there was more of a openness to the cutouts and the gaping on the front is well hidden by how I placed the crocodiles. One last thing, I wanted to make a "corset" belt with a train on the back to add some gold details but time did not allow for it. I might make it in the future to have a more completed design.

Lastly, I want to say thank you for your patience! This month has been a bit slower on the production side of things and this post took much longer to figure out. I truly wanted to make this as easy to understand as I could, BUT if there is a part you want more clarity on, I am so happy to oblige!

Next up, Noods and the BBL skirt (Myceleria's skirt)! The video tutorial is taking much longer than expected but I cant wait to show you how easy it is to make :D Its perfect for the Ren faire season but also very cute for the day to day. I made the pattern guide intentionally adjustable for waist fluctuation and made for you. I cannot wait to share more!!

With love,

Wendy

Omg it's even cooler than I thought! Just curious, are the crocodile closures DIY'd (originally meant to decorate a desk perhaps) or were they created as closures to begin with? Would love to see how they are attached in closer detail since they appear to just be floating on the dress!

BBreath Designs

OOOH!! Good question!! The crocodiles are actually a resin print done by a friend! They had software to put holes in any 3d model so I placed two holes on the side of the head and two holes on the side of the tail!

Sewlock Holmes

That's so cool!!!! They look just like a brass crocodile I would find when antique shopping, love it! <3

BBreath Designs

I used rub and buff in copper and a paint brush to get the look! Honestly the easiest part of the whole build! Because the crocodiles can be a bit heavy, I used interfacing where I planned on stitching them to the slit on the wrong side to help the fabric!

Sewlock Holmes

They look fantastic! Were they an early part of the design? Or did they pop up later after you knew that you wanted the cut outs?

BBreath Designs

They were part of the design! I wanted to incorporate a small bit of story telling with the crocodile closures to suggest that this Captain has gotten over their fear of the croc

Sewlock Holmes

Oo, I like that this Captain has had a growth arc!

Loved all of the details! This is so cool to see the process and the mockup that you made.

Thank you Miranda 🥹 genuinely a lot of planning went into the design before the 7 days of sewing. Lots of hidden work like perfecting my bodice block was the main reason I could crank this out in a week
