"Like a kid" "it doesn't matter what age you are." You're right, such helplessness and anguish would be appropriate reactions from someone of any age or experience level. Also, given the stakes of their adventure, the trials and tribulations they go through, and as long as the series has been up to this point (and is in totality), it's easy to forget that Luffy is a 17 year old that's only been out to sea for well under a year. Given that, met with such complete failure... From his point of view, in order to see any glint of hope for the future or any sort of world where he didn't just recruit people, gain their unwavering faith, and march them directly to an early grave, he'd have to be absolutely delusional.

God this breaks me, especially the Robin one, she finally had found her friends, her family but its just popped away from her. This is such a heartbreaking episode

I feel like no one talks enough about the forshadowing that happens in ennies lobby. Luffy created gear 2 and 3 so that he "didn't have to lose any of his friends" which makes this so heartbreaking. Also, this is a direct result of luffy ignoring the warnings of hatchi and punching that celestial dragon so he is probably full of self doubt as well.
