Elena is surprised when she receives an invitation to a ball - and when Damon and Stefan hear that the party is being held at Klaus's mansion, they insist on going as well. Caroline and Matt are also invited to the festivities, each by an unexpected admirer. During the course of the evening, Elena learns about a shocking plan which could lead to numerous deaths.

I watch this just for the scene of Elena walking through the door in her STUNNING dress and Damon not being able to take his eyes off her and the entrance is SO iconic

I mean Stefan did that when he was spiraling out of control and acting out of character... meanwhile this is who Damon is (he's done this multiple times). And not excusing what Tyler did at all but that happened 58 episodes ago and he hasn't displayed any inherently violent or controlling behaviors since season 1. Meanwhile, Damon has been gripping Elena up and being controlling since the beginning of time and doesn't think how he is moving is wrong at all. 😭

Oh I don't deny that at all lol. I know he genuinely wants to protect her, and Elena is absolutely reckless 😭 My issue is that good intentions don't automatically excuse the way you go about something. It's still HER life, and Damon constantly grabbing her, controlling her, and trying to override her decisions because he thinks he knows what's best for her is exactly what bothers me. We literally saw where that mentality can lead last season when he forced his blood on her against her will because he wanted to "protect" her. He meant well then too! 😭 That doesn't make taking away her choice okay. You can want to protect someone while still respecting their autonomy.

But then Stefan criticized Damon for doing that and turned around and fed her his blood and threatened to drive her off the bridge. The best thing Stefan ever said was in season 3 episode 12 when he said “you’re better than him Elena, you’re better than both of us”

Oh I absolutely agree that what Stefan did on that bridge was HORRIBLE 😭 But I'm not really sure what that has to do with my criticism of Damon lol. Me criticizing Damon doesn't mean I'm saying Stefan has never mistreated Elena or done anything terrible to her. I think there's also a difference between pointing to horrible things another character has done and addressing the actual pattern I'm talking about with Damon. My issue is that Damon repeatedly tries to override Elena's choices, physically grabs/manhandles her when she won't listen to him, and justifies it as protecting her. Stefan doing something awful doesn't suddenly make that behavior from Damon okay 😭 I can drag them both when they deserve it.

Oh Mike, the amount of times you have to tell people this is crazy. Y'all. Stefan, Klaus, Tyler or anyone doing other horrible things DOES NOT undo the ABSOLUTE CRAZY SHIT that Damon does! Like why are some of y'all not wanting to accept that? 😂😂And all y'all ever do to defend this man is to try and point and shift the topic to other bad characters, as if that makes Damon's bad choices any better? Love him all you want, it's just a show and not that deep, cause most of the characters are horrible people who kill and hurt others. But you can't excuse someones horrible actions with anothers horrible actions, cause that just shows that both of them suck and nothing else, lmao😂

And what about season 1 Damon literally r*ping Caroline? Or him being the reason Vicky is dead? And Vicky's friends? What about them? Or him killing Jeremy because Elena said no repeatedly(!!!) after Damon tries to force himself onto her? Or whenever he kills Alaric? He murdered their history teacher. He killed uncle John without knowing he had a ring. He murdered Lexi, what about that? Let's not forget that. Or when he murdered uncle Zach? What about Mason Lockwood? Or when he attacks and almost kills Bonnie in season 1? Or what about any time he hurt Elena or hurts/kills people? be so for real

I do love Damon. I think it is obvious he cares and would do whatever it takes to keep Elena safe. He always cared but does not always show it. I love him though. I also prefer Delena to Klaroline.

Okay don’t hate me but I can’t help but love klaus and Damon, same way i absolutely love Katherine. I’m a sucker for a villain 🤣 however if this was real life and I met those two men I’d run for the absolute hills, but for TV… chefs kiss 😂

My nerd self also thought the naming was weird when I first heard it and in Viking tradition they use what’s called a Patronymic naming style where children all had different last names depending on the father. “Mikaelson” translates to “son of Mikael” and say Kol went on to have a child their last name would technically be “Kolson”. It is likely Mikaels last name was his father’s differing from his children. I can only imagine this must make any Viking ancestry really complicated to trace. Sorry if this is long or confusing I fell in a rabbit hole when this show came out and will now tell everyone I can😂😂

I was going to say something similar! In Iceland, instead of family names your last name is (father’s name) + son/dottir (daughter). So Rebekah’s last name would actually be Mikaeldottir. In other countries that stopped doing that and switched to family names, they typically took the father’s last name and applied it to everyone (hence why you see “son” suffixed names more). In this case, it made more sense to just use the surname the majority of them would’ve used anyway (taking Mikael’a last name would’ve felt a bit random + the characters wouldn’t have made the connection)
