Clarke & Lexa vs. Tondc: necessary sacrifice or unforgivable decision?

Lane J.

I’ve been doing a rewatch along with you and I have been itchingggg for this I am so excited!!

Roselyn

I don't think I could make the decision Clarke and Lexa made but I understand why they had to.

I think it’s easy for some of us to judge Clarke and Lexa’s decision in hindsight and say “I would never do that” but the truth is if they evacuated everyone, it is likely Bellamy would have been caught. If that happened, they would never have a chance to win the war again. Meaning not only would the 47 die, but all the grounders in the mountain would be killed, the mountain men would succeed in taking the ground because they still have missiles and acid fog, and who would be to stop them from committing genocide against all of the grounders and ark people. Clarke and Lexa were in such a precarious position that they were forced to weigh one tragedy over another, because with the time scrunch they had not even a fire big enough to have the desired effect could work - plus if they started a fire people may just try to put it out. If they told people the truth, they might panic etc. And that is the plight of this show and why I love it so much. It shows us that we cannot truly understand what it means to be in their position as a leader unless we are in their position. We can see it with Clarke and Lexa here, Jaha’s ruthlessness on the ark and the culling, even president Dante Wallace is a parallel on the burden they all carry as leaders who are morally judged no matter what they do and must live with the burden. We can easily say we wouldn’t do something they did because it is wrong, only to reap the effects of what we choose possibly being worse. You are essentially just picking and choosing who lives and dies when and where. 300 people died in the culling to save oxygen for the rest? Only for 1000 more to die on the way down. Float people for the smallest crimes? Keeps resources stable, less people commit crimes & population is managed. Evacuate Tondc? Hundreds to thousands more die in place. Who deserves to live or die, what makes one more special over the other? Then you are judged for who you save because of who it killed. It shows us that no matter what they chose people would suffer and die, and only those who didn’t have to make the decision themselves can judge them because they weren’t forced to make it themselves and live with the consequences. But still you can see both sides because it is never truly right or wrong in the face of war. No matter what you do, it will be seen as wrong by one group or the other. I’m not saying Clarke or Lexa were right, just that this reflects the reality of the brutality of war and just war theory. It doesn’t matter if you are on the good or bad side. War and destruction does not discriminate.

also yes Tondc is referring Washington DC!! Just like Lincoln’s name being named after the Abraham Lincoln Memorial statue by his village which is located in Washington DC. I like how they incorporate the real world setting as ruins and remnants of the old world in this post apocalyptic landscape

Yeah I agree… I can’t judge but also yes they could’ve tried at least something to put in effort. But in turn then Bellamy could’ve been caught and then they still could’ve dropped the missile just because… and see how fast it landed the missile would’ve hit still somewhere even if majority of the people weren’t there … the mount weather people just wanted to have the upper hand.

SkyS

I do think it was a necessary decision... But damn seeing all of this really happen is so bad🙆🏽‍♀️🙆🏽‍♀️🙆🏽‍♀️🙆🏽‍♀️😭😭

SkyS

I think I would have done it to be honest. I always believe in looking at the bigger picture. And they really can't show that they know about the missile otherwise the mountain people would have one because now they would definitely be looking for Bellamy and it is too early for that to happen

Laura❤️

It’s called Tondc because there was a highway sign where the “washing” part of Washington DC was rubbed off after the apocalypse. I agree they could’ve at least tried to start a fire but there’s no guarantee that people would actually evacuate and it would probably take too long so they would fire the missile anyway. In the grand scheme of things they did the right thing. Like Clarke said Bellamy is the key to everything so if he dies, they all die. Lexa mentioned that their army is already safe inside the woods so they wouldn’t get hit with the missile. It was only the leaders of the 12 clans in that village at the time. I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT EPISODES!!

Lane J.

As far as Clarke & Lexa’s decision to keep quiet about the missiles, I don’t “agree” with it obviously and I don’t know that I could’ve made the same choice, but this is a war ultimately and unfortunately. I can understand why Lexa felt it was the only option and why Clarke decided to go along with it. All I can is, I’m glad I’ll never be in a position to make those hard decisions.

the missile on tondc has got to be one of the craziest moral dilemmas i’ve ever seen & i don’t blame lexa or clarke for their necessary sacrifice bc it could’ve given up the inside man they need to bring both their peoples home

this reelist scorecard is so tea btw!! love all the new stuff you keep doing, adding & improving 💕

T

Sooooo complicated and I don’t COMPLETELY blame them butttt….. lol idek

honestly, yes I would have done what Clarke and Lexa did, or at least not have been mad at them for it. From our POV it's easy to say they should have warned them or they could've gotten everyone else out in time but all info they had was that a missile was coming in FAST, fast enough where Clarke didn't know whether she'd make it in time to warn Lexa. If Lexa were to die the whole alliance would've crumbled and every thing would have been pointless. As fucked up as it sounds, Lexa's right, they are in war and there are going to be casualties. Now, the mountain men think the leaders are dead and don't know someone's on the inside as well. Their whole plan depends on Bellamy and he's having a hard enough time getting by without actively being searched for. I WILL say though, I would have warned at least Octavia and Kane when I saw them and told them at the very least to leave right now...

I understand they had to make that decision but Clark going back just for her mom didnt seem fair to the rest of the ppl in my opinion
