(trigger warning: abuse)

marvin is real. he is not a colleague, but a relative and my role model in life. this year he told me about the things his girlfriend did to him 30 years ago, about how he tried to navigate that situation, about how this tiny little thing could come at him (or herself) with all kinds of weapons she found in the house (frying pans, stiletto heels, knives…) and the fact that he could never defend himself properly. one moment she was brittle and vulnerable, and the other she tried to hurt him severely. she did, too. and this is a 6 ft tall man with 190 pounds of broad shoulders and muscle!

she also forced him to write long essays about why he was such a bad person, and if the text wasn’t good enough he would have to write it all again. she also isolated him from his friends. marvin knew she was doing all this because she had been abused in the past, and thought he could eventually save her from her own demons. he was afraid of what she’d do to herself if he left. and… he never rose the alarm. he let her hurt him over and over and over. one day he just had had enough - he stopped the car, let her find her own way home, and never spoke to her again.

today he is so happy. at peace. he has a life he loves, a harmonious loving marriage and three beautiful daughters. everything turned out more than fine for him, but his story gave me an eye opener for sure. this could happen to anyone. absolutely anyone.

another time this year a friend of mine gave me a ride. as i saw his right hand on the wheel i noticed a scar i hadn’t seen before. it turned out he had dated a girl a few years back who went completely wild when she got angry. nails, teeth, you name it. she also tried to manipulate him, isolate him from his friends, and use every trick in the book to subdue and control him. she even went to the police to show bruises she had (not from him) and tell them he had caused them. he is also a person i would never have thought would have gone through such a thing. but he had.

this is such a hard situation!! men get abused, too, and when they do it’s such a socially difficult thing to navigate. if you have experienced anything like this you have my deepest respect and empathy. if you go though it right now - don’t hesitate to tell people this is happening. it happened to marvin, it happened to my friend, it happens to a lot of people. there are ways out of there that you may not see yourself. you don’t have to figure it out alone.

sending you all my love.

xx.

Thanks for sharing this, I can imagine it wasn’t easy to put into words and posting about it. It’s such an important reminder that abuse can happen to anyone and it often gets overlooked or not talked about because of a stigma or the feeling of being ashamed.

Hey Anya, thanks for bringing this to light. I think your right, hearing people's struggles others can feel like they can come forward too and maybe not feel so alone. I was with a girl like that in my teens. She wasn't evil, just damaged, would lash out, scream, shout, mess with my head. She convinced me that she was pregnant once. When we would argue and situations weren't going her way she would make out she had cramps and that I was causing her and the baby distress. After one of her more volatile outbursts I left her to it for a few days, which lead to a teary phone call from her saying that she had lost the baby and it was my fault. I beat my hands bloody against a wall and screamed my throat raw that day. Fucked thing was I would find out a year later after she cheated on me, that the baby I had loved and grieved never existed and it was just a test to see if I would stay with her. There's obviously a lot more to the story but this comment is already long enough. Don't feel too sorry for me though. The trope "Friends to lovers" is a trope for a reason. Long story short, I ended up marrying my friend who had been by my side since we were 7. She's given me 2 boisterous baby boys and a home I love to come back to every day. Anyway sorry for the long message but I just want you to know that what you do matters to people. People will get different things from your audios. I love good voice acting and your material that deals with the harder things in life. It helps me navigate/understand situations that my friends and family are going through. Any way take it easy lass and don't be too hard on yourself, your content seems to come from the heart and it really shows. You take care of yourself.

oh wow. thank you so much for sharing this. that can't have been easy, going back there, thinking about all that again... i am so sorry that happened to you. damn. that she had lost the baby and blamed you... that it hadn't even been a baby in the first place, just a test... that she cheated... the outbursts... that's a lot. so glad to hear that you're happily married now, and have two lovely kids! how cool that it happened to be with your childhood friend, too. that's very sweet and heartwarming <3 what a story... thank you again for sharing that with all of us. and your encouragement, too, it's much appreciated <3 <3
