When I first read the Silmarillion at age seventeen, I couldn't really connect with Beren. Here was this gorgeous Elven princess who could have had any handsome Elf she wanted - and she chose a scruffy human?

Four years later, I met a guy with whom I had the nerdiest first date in history - a friend of ours had hooked us up because he had borrowed my Silmarillion comic (through the friend) and now gave it back to me in person. We talked at the Uni cafeteria for hours until it closed, then went to my place and created D&D characters. His was named Beren.

I finally started to see what Lúthien saw in him. And Beren finally acquired a face. (Though the beard is a more recent acquisition.) We've been married for eighteen years now. ;)

To quote my husband (back before he was my anything...): ‘You do not impress girls by being a Tolkien nerd, you impress girls by being good at playing the guitar’ - And was he wrong! (Even then, I was quite impressed by his e-mail address - since I could recognise and understand both the Sindarin and the character it was describing...)

That's the sweetest thing I've read in quite a while.

As all before me said, this is a great story! I always hoped I would meet somebody like that as well, but by now I kinda lost hope. Warms heart to see some of us managed ;)

Love it. Have you ever given us a family photograph of you two and offspring? They keep popping up in your stories. You loyal fans want to see you all together.

I'm veeeery careful with actual photos on the net - even in a relatively cozy space as this. My husband is completely analog. He can't even be googled, haha. It drives new acquaintances nuts.

Well, what I think (even though back in my younger years I was not so sure) is that, when you are a Tolkien nerd, you impress the right kind of people. Who wants to impress everybody. Being a Tolkien nerd got me a husband who is perfect for me. ^^

I have it! A Dolfen family pin set.

Awwww!!! That's the best! A favorite memory of mine is the evening I returned the hardcover Silmarillion I'd borrowed from a friend and we spent until 3am standing in a friend's apartment parking lot discussing it. Yep, he's now my husband! :)

So nice! :) Lúthien is gorgeous and Beren is... scruffy and cute. His neck kind of looks huge to me though? I didn’t notice until third viewing but now I can’t stop noticing... I think it’s that curve in the back that’s making me see it strangely.
