Make reference work for you!

Here's a little tutorial on how to make reference photos work in your art, by making them subject to the idea and an overall composition, not the other way round. Mental thumbnailing All my paintings begin with an idea of a scene I want to paint.

Very cool. I like it when you take us behind the scene.

Thanks for the tutorial! I’ll be sure to show it to my students. I haven’t seen them work with multiple reference pictures but this will help them a lot with their composition classes. Now... so in the Drawing of the Sword lineart, everybody was tensed up about the situation, but Celegorm was actually having fun...? I couldn’t keep myself from laughing loudly enough to wake my husband... XD , then I couldn’t explain what was that about... Well, it was high time for us to be up, even for a weekend. XD

Great, thanks for sharing the tutorial! Many of the things I did know (at least subconsciously), but ll it is great to read them well explained by you.

Thank you for the tutorial! It's really helpful, and always interesting to explore such things on real examples, not in theory.
