you know, never paid much attention to the full lyrics of Zach's song. Kind of amazing lyrics for a 10 year old!

An interesting thing about my relationship with this movie is that I first got to watch it as a kid and now I get to watch it as a teacher (even if I still don't have much experience), and I've always loved it for one reason or another. I like how despite Dewey doing a lot of wrong stuff (REALLY wrong stuff, since it's kids we're talking about) and technically not being a teacher... he really is a good teacher. And that comes from a combination of being really passionate about what he's teaching and really getting to understand the children. It's ironic but it's probably his lack of experience dealing with children what leads him to treating them like real people, something most adults and even a lot of teachers fail to do. He never talks down to them, he always plays to their strengths and interests, he lets them lead the way while still being there to guide and help them (which is something he mentions to the other teachers when they ask about his methods, probably not even realizing he's being truthful). I especially love his conversation with Tomika, which is one of the most body positive exchanges I've ever seen in fiction. He could have tried to downplay how fat she is, or given her advice to lose weight, or told her she is beautiful anyway. Instead of that he tells her what I think is the best advice you can give in a situation like this: that being fat is not what defines her, and she is a cool talented girl no matter how fat she is. And then he adds that he is fat too because he loves eating and there's nothing wrong with that, which I think drives home the point that you get to decide how to live and if you choose to eat what you like even if it makes you fat that's okay. I could keep talking about this movie but I think that's enough for today. As you can see I really love it, and I'm glad you enjoyed it too. :D
