A forest clearing is always a nice place. Goblin ambush, wolf pack, or maybe a giant on his way to devastate a village. That's what you expect and what you could do with the base map. But what if... a rift was to appear, with lava down beneath and fireballs shooting out?

Phase One - nothing out of ordinary, it's going to be a typical encounter

Phase Two - a crack appears on the ground. Is it the enemy spellcaster, or just a natural occurrence? Maybe a giant hit the ground so hard it began to shatter?

Phase Three - now it's a proper rift. It's quite deep and deadly, so it's best for creatures t be able to hang on to the edge.

Phase Four - fireballs appear! Four deadly projectiles are about to strike four areas — predict where they land and move quickly!

Phase Five - the fireballs strike four areas, each is 2x2 squares. What damage is it going to be? I'm going with 4d10 fire damage, reduced to half on a successful DC 15 Dexterity saving throw.
