Is it a bird…? Carolyn looking great as Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl) Time for a cosy, fun, heartwarming watch along

If you guys get a chance to see superman 2 there are 2 versions of that movie the original theatrical version which in my opinion is the better of the two and the ( Richard Donner cut ) of superman 2 , totally two different movies

Mark M

This was a pleasure to watch with you! This movie always brings a smile to my face and I'm glad it did it for you as well. I loved the outfit Carolyn 👍

Mark M

I'd vote for the theatrical cut.

James Hadden

I didn’t know there were two versions, I’ve only ever seen one, which I’m guessing would be the theatrical. Directors’ cuts or special editions are almost always longer, but definitely not always better.

James Hadden

Even Magnum P.I. was in Murder She Wrote

Mark M

James, It's sort of pieced together with alternate takes and test footage.

“ C “ Hernandez

Exactly, also the theatrical version in the scenes where they are in the fortress of solitude kal-el talks to his mother through the crystals and in the Richard Donner cut its pieced together with marlon brando scenes

thansen

I have never much liked the theatrical version, even as a kid. I do like the Donner cut, though. Both are better than III and IV.

Patrick Flanagan

Hmm. This post says the movie is the 104 minute version but the YT video says it's the 137 minute version.

Totally Whatever

The YT video is correct - we watched the 137 minute version. So sorry about that.

Mark M

An early Halloween costume idea.

Patrick Flanagan

Yes, MAGNUM and MURDER, SHE WROTE exist in the same universe, along with a third CBS detective series SIMON & SIMON.

Patrick Flanagan

This movie had a whole lot of Easter eggs for people who had grown up on earlier versions of Superman: Kirk Alyn and Noel Neill had played Superman and Lois waaayyyy back in 1948, in two Saturday matinee serial films (SUPERMAN and ATOM MAN VS. SUPERMAN); they appear here very very briefly as the parents of the little girl who spots Clark racing the train in the beginning. (In fact in longer versions of the movie, the little girl is Lois Lane.) When Clark first meets the Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White, White yells his coffee order to Jimmy Olsen ("black no sugar") and then adds "And don't call me sugar!" by mistake. One of White's catchphrases is "Don't call me chief!" so they had him flub the line as a joke. When Clark asks if the elevator is going down, the occupant says, "No, it's going up, up, up!" This is a reference to Superman's catchphrase from the old-time radio show, "Up, up and away!" When Clark first sees the helicopter crash and looks for a place to change, we see a close-up on a public phone, mounted on a post instead of inside a phone booth. The traditional cliche is of Clark changing into his Superman clothes inside a phone booth, but by the late '70s they were already disappearing. Loved this reaction. When it comes time to watching SUPERMAN II there are a lot of opinions on which version to watch: the theatrical cut, or the 2006 "Donner Cut." Richard Donner directed SUPERMAN and most of SUPERMAN II (they were filmed simultaneously) but had a falling out with the producers and was fired, and another director was hired to complete the film (he ended up reshooting much of it as well). The theatrical SUPERMAN II has its issues but the Donner Cut is not really a "director's cut," as it's patched together from outtakes. I would definitely recommend watching the theatrical cut, whenever you get around to it. Thanks again.

Totally Whatever

Wow, Patrick! Thank you for all of the trivia. I love how many easter eggs they added to the film. We will keep in mind the theatrical version when we watch Superman II.

Fun reaction! The symbols on the reflective outfits that the inhabitants of Krypton are wearing are the symbols of their houses. The "S" in this movie's universe represents the "House of El" for Jor-El and his wife Lara and son, Kal-El. Lara is the former "Lara Lor-Van" and then "Lara Van-El" after marrying Jor-El. Krypton being destroyed was pretty scary to me as a kid, especially with the people falling! Jeff East, who played teenaged Clark Kent had his voice overdubbed by Christopher Reeve using a slightly higher pitch. The running that East did looks a little funny because the actor was being suspended on wires and had to "run" in mid-air. East tore some of his thigh muscles in the process and he was nearly hit by the train during one take, but Gene Hackman's brother and stuntman Richard Hackman held him back as Jeff East swung past the train and then almost back again! https://www.supermanhomepage.com/movies/movies.php?topic=interview-jeff-east Phyllis Thaxter who played Martha Kent made her film debut in 1944 with the World War 2 movie "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" at age 25. The man named "Rex" who Lois says hello to at the entrance of The Daily Planet Building was film critic Rex Reed who had a slightly notorious reputation for being hard on actors. This was Christopher Reeve's first big movie as a lead and it made him a superstar. He's also very good in the movie "The Remains of the Day" (1993) where he has quite a different role. Check it out. That alcove that Otis hides in during the tunnel just before its rear wall/door opens was a real feature of train tunnels. It's identified on the sign inside as "Safety Man Hole" but they were usually called "Safety Refuges" and the idea was that if a rail worker was caught in a tunnel with nowhere to go as a train approached, he would press himself flat into the alcove. Miss (Eve) Teschmacher is Lex's girlfriend and assistant. In this movie, she is played by Valerie Perrine who was a Las Vegas showgirl, Playboy model and actor. After Lois and Superman return after the flight and land at her apartment, when you see Superman leaving and flying away, Margot Kidder is looking at a projection of Christopher Reeve, and then the camera follows her in one continuous take to the inside of her apartment where she goes to the door and opens it to see Christopher Reeve there in person.

Totally Whatever

Thank you! They didn't hold back during the destruction of Krypton. I imagine it was quite scary to watch as a kid. I can't believe he was doing that stunt on wires next to the train. Thanks for all of the trivia!
