If I watch a movie, and you watch a movie, wouldn’t that make it “our” channel?

I also love Damone in his rules on scoring a babe. He had me Led Zeppelin.

This was the first film directed by Amy Heckerling. The insertion of emerging mall culture was her contribution to Cameron Crowe's original script. I think what actually makes this one still relevant is how well she was able to lean into the comedy, while still giving weight to the serious subjects that are explored. It was rare for a film to be so open and honest when dealing with the emotions around abortion, sexual curiosity, or betrayal of childhood friends. The movie was given an X rating after the first submission. Heckerling had insisted that the pool house scene between Damone and Stacy show both male and female nudity (this scene had to be reframed to get the wider release). She stated that if she had to be so vulnerable, so did he. Jennifer Jason Leigh was even publicly vocal, objecting to the change. The recent Criterion release restores the original shots, and I think it completely serves to change the power dynamic between the two. We see how awkward the situation is for both, and how uncomfortable they both get. Lastly, just wanted to say you did very well with the bit parts and cameos. So many from this cast ended up having success later on. You were right that was Nicolas Cage, billed as Nicolas Coppola. The other two surfer friends were Eric Stoltz and Anthony Edwards. I hope you enjoyed this. It's one I revisit often. It almost wasn't made, because the studio attitude at the time was movies about kids were only successful if they focused on nostalgia (think American Graffiti and Grease). The irony now is because this one focused so heavily on current lifestyles/trends of the time, we have another iconic, nostalgic time capsule to enjoy alongside those others.

Thanks for explaining that, I like that her original vision made both parties vulnerable. Yes, we thought that was Nicolas Cage!!

I’m pretty sure this movie would not be made today without serious changes.

Also, I was not aware of the Criterion release! It came out in 2021. Going to have to get a copy of that asap.

In 1982 'Are you working hard or hardly working?' was a pick-up line apparently:) Is there such thing as a good pick-up line? What's the cheesiest one you've heard? The girl in the car that Brad is flirting with before he realizes he's wearing a pirate's costume was Nancy Wilson from the band Heart. She was dating Cameron Crowe at the time and they later married. Judge Reinhold is probably most famous for this movie and Beverly Hills Cop.

Mike the Ginger

The girls probably know him as Neil from "The Santa Clause" films, too.

Great full length reaction! This movie is one that I saw as a young teenager around Y2K, nearly 20 years after it's release. Crazy to think I thought the movie was "old" then when it had been out 18 years and now it has been out 43 years! Director Amy Heckerling is one of my personal favorite film directors. She also directed the first two of the three "Look Who's Talking" films with John Travolta and Kirstie Alley which are classics. If you haven't seen those, I recommend. She directed "Clueless" in 1995, and "Loser" in 2000 with Jason Biggs. She does comedy very well, but is very realistic and graphic in this film when it comes to sex. (This is her most graphic movie, most of the others are PG-13) I jotted down a few notes while watching: - Judge Reinhold is the actor who played Brad Hamilton. He played in the "Beverly Hills Cop" films in 1984, 1987, 1994 and 2024. (I recommend all the Beverly Hills Cop films) He was also in "The Santa Clause" films as the stepfather Neil. He was really big for a time period in the 1980s before his career cooled off a bit. He was also great in the comedy film "Ruthless People" (1986) with Bette Midler and Danny DeVito. That movie was actually one of the biggest box office hits of 1986. - The students were smelling the paper because they were printed off a mimeograph machine, The smell was like a fresh dry erase marker, but not as strong and a bit sweeter. (This was before my time as I was born in the 1980s) - I am very impressed you recognized the teacher as the Subway guy from "Ghost". Vincent Schiavelli was in many movies and instantly recognizable. He passed away in 2005. I think this film is one of my personal favorite movies, of all time. (Funny enough, Shawshank, Fast Times, Fargo and Jaws are all in my personal top ten and you guys have reacted to all of them recently). This movie is a perfect time capsule for Generation X (those born roughly 1961 to 1981), who were in high school during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was so different than when we were in school, and certainly different than things are today. In fact, I think a 15 year old in 1982 may be more like a 25 year old is today. Between the hairstyles, the clothing, the music, and the iconic comedy, this movie is just fantastic and I hope you both enjoyed it! Mike

I’m lucky that in my area is an enormous mall, the King of Prussia Mall (it even has a record store!), not far from Philadelphia. Jennifer Jason Leigh really was 19 (playing 15) when the movie was filmed. Mr. Hand the main teacher is played by Ray Walston. He is probably most famous for the 1963 TV series “My Favorite Martian” and appeared in a number of other movies. As Mike points out below, in that one classroom scene with the kids smelling the papers, they were inhaling the odor of the Mimeograph ink which was a mix of isopropanol and methanol. Mimeograph machines (also called “dittos”) were a way of quickly and cheaply duplicating papers for schools and other institutions. We also had this in grade school in the 1980s and I think also in the early 1990s when I was in high school and I definitely recall the odor he describes! You can see what it was all about in this short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RflUTILxre4 Brad (Judge Reinhold) drives a 1960 Buick LeSabre, the big blue car he has a few payments left on. A very different kind of Jennifer Jason Leigh movie you should check out is “Single White Female” from 1992. It also stars Bridget Fonda who was a bit of a phenom in the 1990s. Cameron Crowe, who wrote Ridgemont High, directed the 1992 movie "Singles" also starring Bridget Fonda. It’s a fun romantic comedy. Stu Nahan, the guy who interviewed Spicoli in his dream was also in the Rocky movies as one of the boxing commentators. “Licorice Pizza” the name you noticed as one of the background stores of the mall is also a 2021 movie directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and stars Alana Haim of the band Haim. Sean Penn is also in the movie and the director said his movie was inspired by “Fast Times...” I haven’t seen “Licorice Pizza” yet, but I hear it’s supposed to be very good. I must admit, I cheated in calculus and algebra by putting cheat sheet inside the back of my scientific calculator. I was never in a good at math! My house had 2 phone jacks in the master bathroom! I never made any calls from them though! Some of Phoebe Cates’ other popular movies were the two “Gremlins” movies which you should probably watch if you haven’t already seen. Since you guys enjoyed Fast Times so much I'd recommend a similar movie called "Dazed and Confused" (1993) starring Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey and Matthew McConaughey. It's directed by by Richard Linklater and is set in 1976, so another good time capsule movie.

Totally Whatever

Thank you again for all the great trivia. We have "Beverly Hills Cop" on our list and hope to watch it soon. So glad to hear that we have been watching all of your personal favorites!

Totally Whatever

Great trivia, thank you! I knew I recognized Phoebe Cates and now I know I remembered her from "Gemlins". We will add "Dazed and Confused" to our list - what a great cast.

Totally Whatever

They are all so cheesy. "Are you tired? Because you've been running through my mind all day."

Kudos to Mike for mentioning Ruthless People, a savage dark comedy that was ahead of its time, I'm always surprised so few reactors give it a try.

Mike the Ginger

What is interesting is how things change over time. In 1986, Back to School was the 4th highest grossing film of the year, and Ruthless People was the 8th. Both movies made more money than Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Stand by Me, and The Fly, yet all these years later, those movies have become better remembered than Back to School and Ruthless People.

Grampa Brad

Judge Reinhold, Fred Savage and Corrinne Bohrer were all fantastic in "Vice Versa" (1988). Hilarious film.

Totally Whatever

We will add that one to the list. We've never heard of it before..

Harvey Lee

Like father Like Son with Kirk Cameron and Dudley Moore was a movie in a similar vein It's really FREAKY FRIDAY except it's the male version .
