Who the hell puts crushed Oreos in their chili anyway?

Michael Lynch

The greatest Buddy cop series of all time. All four are awesome. And happy of happiest days Mel Gibson is writing the fifth movie.

The timing of this upload couldn’t have been better. I just got back from vacation a few hours ago, unpacked, threw in a load of laundry, and there it was. This is my favorite entry in the series, though 3 comes really close. Glad you enjoyed it too! The chemistry and bickering between the two are still amazing, to begin with, but then adding Joe Pesci as a third wheel just elevates it to the next level. Joss Ackland (Rudd) is such a solid character actor and he makes for a far more memorable, despicable villain than the one in the first film. It’s tough to juggle such contrasting tones, but this series really pulls it off. In fact, I think 2, 3, and 4 handle it even better than the first. They still venture into dark and emotional territory, just not as deeply as the first one, while dialing up the entertainment factor. That final scene where Riggs is shot and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door starts playing always gives me chills. Of course, nowadays we know he survives, but back in 1989, with no sequels yet confirmed, it genuinely could have felt like he might not make it. The earlier drafts of the script, originally written by Shane Black, had a much darker tone, even darker than the first movie, with Riggs actually dying during the final shootout. However, director Richard Donner and the studio pushed for a more upbeat and entertaining direction. As a result, Black left the project, and his script was significantly rewritten. This ended up being his last involvement with the Lethal Weapon series. That said, Black went on to write and direct several other films that carry a similar "buddy cop" dynamic. Though often with a darker, edgier tone. Movies like The Last Boy Scout (1991) starring Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans, The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) with Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) with Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer, and The Nice Guys (2016) with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Looking forward to your Lethal Weapon 3 reaction. I'm very confident you will equally enjoy that too. Hopefully we won’t have to wait long! PS: just a heads-up, that one has a post-credit scene that’s worth sticking around for!

As a lifelong drummer, my take is that any “count to three” scenarios should be countdowns. That’s because the numbers are spoken to establish a tempo, which leads to the participants acting in unison. Examples… 3... 2… 1… GO! 3… 2… 1… PLAY! All future videos will now start perfectly! lol

Totally Whatever

Not sure we'd like that! We definitely don't know anyone who adds Oreos to chili! 😂

Totally Whatever

I can only imagine the focus on Apartheid was somewhat of a big deal when this movie came out.

Totally Whatever

Perfect timing, nice! We love the chemistry between these characters and how much a part of Murtaugh's family Riggs is becoming. That shot at the end after Riggs is shot is beautiful with the lighting and music. Looks like you just gave us a few more movies to add to our list! Thanks!

Totally Whatever

For sure...although something makes me think we'll never get the perfect timing! 😂

For the drive-thru Subways they were limited here in California back in the early 90s, in today's age they are less rare given only few cities have them. This series gave way to more buddy cop films like Beverly Hills Cop, Die Hard and Rush Hour.

So, about movies 3 and 4... I think most people would say they're not as good as this one. But they're still worth watching. You'll still enjoy them. I also feel the need to be annoying and remind you both to make sure you have earphones in both ears (if you don't already). I was reminded of it during this reaction, as some of those sassy 80's guitar licks in the music score could only be heard on one side of the stereo mix. Aside: The "They f*ck you at the drive-thru" monologue by Joe Pesci is iconic. It's practically more well-known than the entirely of Lethal Weapon 2. What's funny is that as a kid, it never occurred to me how weird it was that they were getting drive-thru at Subway. But as an adult, it's clear that it was likely paid sponsorship - and they had to simply make Subway "work" with the script they already had. (Earlier on when they were all getting ready to watch the daughter's commercial on TV, there was an actual Subway ad playing, backing up my suspicion that Subway paid for product placement.)

Totally Whatever

They have drive-thru Jimmy John's sandwiches here in Illinois, but no Subway drive-thru that I know of.

Totally Whatever

Yes, it does seem like a paid sponsorship. We didn't notice the Subway ad playing before the daughter's ad!

REDR58

All great recommendations!

Great full length reaction! I was surprised that you two are the only reactors I have seen who watched this movie with suspicion of Rika's character. Lethal Weapon 3 is probably the weakest of the series...and it is still great, so it shows how wonderful the series is.

Phil Stubblefield

Hysterically delightful reaction, Nanolyn! 🤣 I had forgotten how many great lines Murtaugh had: • "Nailed them both!" • ["Diplomatic immunity."] "It's just been revoked!" • "They've been de-kaffir-nated!" And don't you feel bad now for doubting Rika? 😢

Totally Whatever

Glad you enjoyed it! 🤣 Yes - we feel horrible for doubting her.

Mike the Ginger

I thought she was hot, but I am a freak so my opinion is moot.

Mike the Ginger

I think the Revoked Murtaugh scene may actually be one of the best action kill scenes of a bad guy in any action movie from any decade.

Mike the Ginger

We don't have Jimmy Johns drive-thru's here in Ohio, but we do have Jimmy Johns. They have wonderful pesto bowtie pasta salad too.

"And . . . heeere . . . we . . . go!"

- The South African who was standing on the plastic drop cloth is the same actor who played Drake the machine gunner in "Aliens" - The woman detective who got blown up on her diving board is the same actress who played Vasquez the machine gunner in "Aliens" and John's foster mother in "Terminator 2" - The Republic of South Africa is a combination of three former colonies: the Cape Colony, the Transvaal, and the Orange Free State. - South Africans descended from the colonists of the British Cape Colony speak English with an accent that is similar to Australian. - South Africans who are descended from the colonists of the Transvaal and Orange Free State are called Afrikaaners and speak a dialect of Dutch called Afrikaans. - Several times the Afrikaaners in the movie use the word "kaffir". This is an Afrikaans racial epithet used similarly to the "N-word". It is derived from the Arabic word "kafir" or "kefir", meaning "unbeliever" and was originally used by Arab slavers operating in the region in the 1500's-1800's. It is also used in Namibia and Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia). In post-1990's English-speaking areas of South Africa it is referred to as "the K-word".

Phil Stubblefield

I can't comment on whether or not you're a freak, Mike, but I think few would argue with the opinion that Patsy Kensit, the actress who played Rika, was beautiful! What incredible cheekbones!

Mike the Ginger

Riggs almost dying gets me. I noticed you guys were holding your breath.

As always another great watch ladies. Always fun to see this with new eyes along for the ride in Tish's car. It's also fun to watch new people fall in love with Leo. Most sequels are not very good but this franchise knows how to do it. It truly gets better as you go. Hope you carry this one on.
