If you enjoy Leslie Neilson in this movie you might want to see Spy Hard and Wrongfully Accused.

Very entertaining reaction ladies. I'm so glad you had watched Platoon prior to watching this. It makes the scene of them laughing hysterically while coming out of the theatre even better:)

Totally Whatever

Thanks, Mark. We couldn't stop laughing while watching this one.

JAKH

Not sure if you are old enough to recognize all of the Axis of Evil types in the opening scene: Idi Amin - Ugandan dictator Yasser Arafat - Palestinian terrorist leader Muammar Ghaddafi - Libyan dictator Mikhail Gorbachev - Soviet Union Premier Ayatollah Khomeini - Iranian shi'ite dictator Fidel Castro - Cuban communist dictator

Totally Whatever

Thanks for that breakdown - we didn't recognize all of them.

- the boiling meat scene is a reference to "Fatal Attraction" (1987) - Frank's story about a blimp accident is the plot of "Black Sunday" (1977) - the red-stained lips and pile of shells outside the car door are from Iranian pistachios, which were dyed red to cover up stains from rusty pans used to roast them - the mayor's office scene about the actors in the park is a reference to "Dirty Harry" (1971). Here's a comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4ui_eQF4oE

Glad you two saw Platoon first...

Phil Stubblefield

I don't know why I had never noticed the Dirty Harry homage! Thanks for sharing that one! 👍

And, of course, Airplane! (1980), which is already on your list. (Note that the exclamation point is part of the title!) Prior to that movie, Leslie Nielsen had primarily played straight, dramatic roles. But as his Wikipedia articles notes, that role marked a turning point in his career: "The film, a parody of disaster films such as Zero Hour! and Airport, was based on building a comedy around 'serious' actors better known for their dramatic roles. Other 'straight' stars in the film included Robert Stack, Peter Graves, and Lloyd Bridges." In other words, if you love deadpan comedy, then Airplane! is the movie for you! In many ways, it's even more absurd than The Naked Gun, if you can believe it! 😂

Phil Stubblefield

Very fun reaction, Nanolyn! Some of my favorite parts of this movie are when it goes full film noir, with the classic narrative style and dramatic soundtrack, or with dialog that sounds as if it were taken straight from The Maltese Falcon or The Big Sleep (both of which you should see!): "Frank, what's wrong?" "A lot of things, sweetie pie. A little meeting that turned into a peek-a-boo session with bullets, all set up by someone who's been playing me like a violin at the annual saps convention." But then something ludicrous happens to break the spell, and the jarring contrast makes the joke even funnier! 🤣 Speaking of soundtrack, I think you're slipping, Carolyn! I didn't hear you comment on the occasional saxophone... 🎷 As you suspected, the baseball scene stars a number of actual sports announcers playing themselves. Plus, for a touch of the absurd, psychologist and advice columnist Dr. Joyce Brothers. (???) Some of the players, including lead-off hitter Jay Johnstone, were also retired major leaguers playing themselves. The assassin was Reggie Jackson, one of the more famous men in baseball at the time and an eventual inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His nickname was "Mr. October" because of his pivotal role in so many playoff victories, including multiple World Series. Assorted notes: • Yes, I would absolutely *love* to see a rewatch of A League of Their Own and/or the Jurassic Park franchise! As long as you clearly advertise it as a rewatch, no one can rightfully complain. (Although, this being the internet, someone inevitably will...) • So, your mom and dad are notorious for expired food? Is there a family story you'd like to share in a Totally Extra? (FYI, my in-laws were the same way. They had moved from New York to Texas in the early 1990s. When my wife and her brothers were cleaning out their parents' home over a decade later, they found canned food from NY!) • Finally, enjoy your next Arbor Day! 😁 Phil

Totally Whatever

Glad you liked this one- I'll make sure to tell Carolyn that she is slipping!! Ha ha, yes - that would make a good Totally Extra!! Thanks for the details on the baseball scene.

Of course Airplane. Also I'm quite serious and don't call me Shirley. 😉

I watched the remake with Liam Neeson today and they did this very proud. He played it straight through every gag, Leslie would have loved it. Fun watch ladies, Airplane is a must!

We’ve heard mix reviews but we do want to see the new one.
