"Never mind that s..t here comes Mongo#

Michael Keenan

What an ingenious way to subdue a brute “Candygram for (fill in brut’s name.

Greg In East TN

Richard Prior was one of the writers and he was the one that insisted on including the racial slurs. He wanted the people how it sounded and make them more aware of that. When Taggart rides up and says, "What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here?" it was a play on the phrase of "what in the world is going on here?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5Kjk8Ffxuo In Harvey Korman's roles, Hedy/Hedley and Count De Money/Count Demonet (History of the world) He also chips a tooth in each movie. You are one of the few that caught the wedding picture from the rear in Lamarr's office! Slim Pickens (Taggart) was also the B-52 pilot in the movie Dr. Strangelove (an early 60ss movie, outside your time frame, but definitely worth the watch!) Dom Delouise is the director in this movie, Caesar in History of the World, and the Italian Don in Robin Hood, Men in Tights. He also made movies with Burt Reynolds. The same hangman here was also the hangman in Robin Hood. The preacher in this movie was also the old man they rolled into the classroom at the first of Young Frankenstein. Did you catch the "Laurel and Hardy" (a former comedy duo actors) reference at the welcoming speech? The fourth wall is barely there in this movie. It starts with the old woman getting beat up with "Have you ever seen such cruelty?" Did you catch the bartender's name? LOL Brooks was the governor and the Sioux Chief. When Waco Kid says, "...you know....morons." it was an ad lib and that's real laughter from Bart. Mongo was Alax Karras, a former NFL football player. Warner Brothers owned Looney Tunes, so they could use the music for free during the Candygram scene. Watch when Mongo enters the bar. You can see his shadow on the set background behind him. "If you shoot him, you'll only make him mad" was taken from a Jim Stafford song Cow Patty. Mel Brooks is said to have said that "I'm Tired" was the nastiest song he ever wrote. If anyone knows what the line "I am not from Havana" means, please fill me in. I've wondered this for years. When the criminals are lined up to sign up, remember that Brooks was Jewish, so he included every group that persecuted the Jews over time, including Arabs and Nazis. "Badges? We don't need any steeeenkin badges" is a classic line from a Bogart film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OcM23Hbs5U Randolph Scott was an early western movie star. Most reactors are too young to know who Jesse Owens was. When Bart says, "OK folks, let's wipe them out!" the rest of the film switches back to the studio lot from the fake town. The guy dressed as Hitler in the cafeteria is Ralph Manza, an American character actor who made over 160 appearances in American film and television shows. Did you notice that it only cost $3 to get into the movie? When Mongo hits the guy as Bart departs, the guy he hits looks exactly like Joe Torre, famous baseball manager. Did anyone else notice that? Hedy Lamar sued Brooks over the use of her name. This just gave the movie more publicity. They settled out of court. Clevon Little had no movie experience. Gene Wilder took him under his wing and gave him tips of camera angles, enunciation, and all the tricks of the trade. They became best friends. Can you tell I've seen this movie more than once? LOL I'm sure there's a lot of stuff I missed, but your smart viewers I'm sure will fill in the gaps. Thank you so much for this. I needed a smile this morning! Be well, Greg

Can we all say ‘Campfire scene!’

"The sheriff is near.............No, the sheriff is a n..........." incredible joke.....mel brooks for the win

When Hedy Lamarr (that's Hedley) is running off the lot, he passes a man standing on the corner looking bewildered. That man was not part of the film, but had wandered into the shot. He didn't understand Mel's request to move, so Mel sent over a waiver for him to sign and just left him in the film. lol Thanks for a great reaction to one of the greatest comedies ever made.

Sit back, this could be a long one. HEDY LEMARR Hedy LeMarr was an actress and movies star of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. She came to the attention of Hollywood by a singular distinction. She is widely regarded to be first female to perform a fully nude scene and "simulate" sexual acts in a major motion picture. The film was a Czechoslovakian film called ECSTACY (1930). She's also was known as one of the most beautiful women in the world and this and her films are what defined her for entire life. What most people failed to recognize, or were completely unaware of, was how intelligent she was. We're talking genius level. Today she is now best known as the co-inventor of wireless guidance system today known as frequency hopping. At the beginning of World War II, along with composer George Antheil, Lamarr co-invented a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of radio jamming by the Axis powers. This approach, conceptualized as a "Secret Communication System", was intended to provide secure, jam-resistant communication for weapon guidance by spreading the signal across multiple frequencies. Similar technology was used in operational systems only beginning in 1962, which was well after World War II and three years after the expiry of the Lamarr–Antheil patent. Frequency hopping, which existed and was utilized before the Lamarr–Antheil patent, is a foundational technology for spread spectrum communications. Its principles are utilized for secure wireless networking, including Bluetooth and early versions of Wi-Fi, which use variants of spread spectrum to protect data from interception and interference. She did not stop there with her inventions (which I will not go into here) but today she is widely recognized for her tech contributions and is even in the inventor's hall of fame. CLEVON LITTLE Clevon was not the first person cast in the role. Mel originally wanted Richard Pryor (the film's co-author) to play Black Bart, but the studio would not insure Pryor because of his heavy drug use. MADELINE KHAN'S CHARACTER You and everyone in your audience is too young to get the reference, but Madeline is doing a parody of Marlene Dietrich, from her 1930 debut film THE BLUE ANGEL, where she played a cabaret singer in post WWI Germany. https://youtu.be/Lw6GJiGNO74?si=VtfGAjdlqkCX0j7c THAT TEACHER This is Mel Brooks' lovely wife and actress Anne Bancroft. THE SONGS All written by Mel Brooks. The title song "Blazing Saddles," was performed by singer/song writer Frankie Laine. He was only told it was a western when he performed it for the film. THE DRUNK The drunk is actor/film director Jack Starrett Jr., perhaps best known for his role as Gabby Johnson, a parody of George "Gabby" Hayes, in the 1974 film Blazing Saddles and is also known for his role as the brutal policeman Art Galt in the 1982 action film First Blood. THE PLAN AT THE END -AN ABSURDIST MASTERPEICE Mel Brooks is a lover of Russian cinema and the absurdist movement. While this ended may seem completely absurd, it is in fact a amalgamation of may classic tropes of the golden and silent age of Hollywood - the musicals, Warner Bros cartoons, and slapstick comedy of the silent era. https://youtu.be/aHY5SM0YFv0?si=RzfWE-PKAigOfnkC https://youtu.be/2LhtNEmNkuY?si=UsdXWx43gMK_v2Zy https://youtu.be/qgEMeZ-HTcc?si=hAWVaXPNfS3wZ9id WHATEVER THE CAR ON THE RAAILROAD TRACK IS CALLED It's called a hand-car. I wanted one too. WHERE'S ALL THE QICKSAND? Right?! This and Bigfoot were the major concerns to kids growing up in the 70s. THE WACKO KID Gene Wilder was a last minute replacement. The original actor - Gig Young, was an alcoholic, back before we really understood what that meant. He showed up on his first day so... waisted, that he was fired before day's end and Mel called in a favor. Actually he begged Gene. I would urge you in whatever spare time you may have, to check out the HBO two-part documentary MEL BROOKS THE 90 YEAR-OLD MAN

Great reaction Another Western Comedy you'd enjoy is Support Your Local Sherrif with James Garner, Joan Hackett, Walter Brennan, Harry Morgan and Bruce Dern. Sharp, witty dialog and James Garner at his charismatic best

Mr. Writhms

Along with co-writing, Richard Pryor was supposed to play Sheriff Bart, which would have been his first team-up with Gene Wilder. But his drug problem at the time kept him from the role. Since you ladies love Gene Wilder, you should see the movies with him and Richard Pryor, starting with “Silver Streak”. They are one of the best comedy duos.

Silver Machine

You chose my favorite punchline for the post quote!

Silver Machine

I love how he delivers that line. And did everybody recognize the actor? He's the Big Lebowski!

"Hey where are the white women at?:

Harvey Lee

This movie is gonna leave my face hurting from all the laughter .😅 Thanks for making hump day 🐪 Wednesday so much better Car and Nan !!♥️🖤

Totally Whatever

I think we are most lacking in Western films, I'll add that one.

Totally Whatever

Now we must read more about Hedy LeMar, she is fascinating! Thanks, as always, for the extra trivia and links. I thought there might be more to Madeline's song.

Totally Whatever

Lol - could you imagine being that man? What a great story to tell friends.

Totally Whatever

Incredible trivia, Greg! Thank you. Clearly, we missed a few things ;) It's much harder for us to get references in 70s movies.

Greg In East TN

I have been going to suggest it, but it's 1968 I think, before their time window. I also liked Support Your Local Gunfighter, but thought Sheriff was better.

In the flashback of Bart and his family encountering the Sioux Indians, the chief - another appearance by Mel Brooks - is speaking Yiddish, a language traditionally used by Germanic Jews, which originated in the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages. The use of it declined massively during the Holocaust; approximately 85% of the 6 million Jews killed were speakers. Because it does sound a bit nonsensical to non-speakers, the language sometimes humorously showed up in short films by the Three Stooges, five of whom were all of Russian Jewish ancestry.

Bill Elliott

Can’t commit to the watch along tonight, but the stunned looks on your faces at minute 28 tell quite a tale! Can’t wait for the YT! Sidebar, for those who have kids, Mel Brooks sold the rights to “ Blazing Saddles” and it was made into a cartoon movie called “Paws of Fury” , he even reprises his old role. Here it’s a town full of cats in medieval Japan and the newly recruited Samurai is a dog.

Silver Machine

And quite a few Yiddish words still appear in American pop culture like klutz, schmuck, schmooze, schlep, kvetch, nosh and chutzpah. Mazel Tov!

Prof Moff

I love Madeline Kahn. She is just one of the funniest actors ever. Her adlibs on set are legendary in behind the scenes of movies bits.

Totally Whatever

I love her too! After watching her in Clue I was obsessed. There are still so many of her movies that I haven't seen though.
