Okay, I finished! Last long one for me. Again, wow, gonna get you guys tons of views and brilliant idea on the You Tube stream. This alone may get you to 50000. Carolyn, I figured with your love of art you would really like the set pieces here, so the elvish complex, referred to by us dorks as Lothlorien, is unlike anyplace in Middle Earth because it resembles the elven kingdoms of the first age. The reason for this: Galadriel, who is, along with another character named Cirdan who the films never show, the oldest elf lord in Middle Earth. Not only that, she is now the only one left who went to Valinor, the elves heaven on earth, from which she left, against the wishes of her father, along with her brothers and all their armies to pursue Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. Then she fought Sauron and Morgoth’s servants, but because of the “kin strife” she and her brothers created she was banned from returning to Valinor until she redeemed herself. That’s the backstory behind the scene you witnessed where she rejects the Ring of Power, which plays out exactly in the film as it did in the book, except that Sam is there too in the book. There is also no debate in the book about going to Lothlorien (Tolkien based it on Chicago…jk…no he didn’t…..), it was one of their intended destinations all along and the elves there were immediately helpful. Next, you guys have Boromir spot on, and in the book, the part where he tries to take the ring is pretty accurate. He paces back and forth in front of Frodo talking about grand alliances and using the ring to over throw Sauron himself. Seeing this, a mortified but determined Frodo realizes, he needs to leave the fellowship. On a few personal notes, when I was 15, I had to do quarterly book report and the book I chose was the Fellowship of the Ring. I was crazy behind, and my mom let stay home from school one day so I could finish the book and write the report. In one sitting, I finished the second half of the book, which covered Moria, Lothlorien, and the ambush at Parth Galen, and where Frodo sees Barad Dur from the seat of Amon Hen while wearing the Ring. It was the best day of reading my life and I was hooked. When playing with my kids, I developed a game called fellowship, where nine different members of their toys, for example. a stuffed animal, a My Little Pony, a Transformer, a Ninja Turtle, etc, and they all have to work together to protect one member who has a magic item. Sound familiar? As a gift from N6 team when I left my XO tour, they gave me a 3D printed wizard staff with the tag, “an XO is never late, nor is he ever early, he arrives precisely when he means to”. And when my kids have their birthday parties, I tell them, try to keep the number guests to around 9. Thanks for sharing your journey you two!

I accidentally deleted my Gandalf and the Balrog post…. Can you guys undelete?

As I have said in an earlier letter, I have far too much insight on this production to really whittle it down, but here are a few things not generally known by the public. 1. It is known that Vigo Mortensen was a last minute replacement for the role of Aragorn, but few know who was the previous actor that was cast, and why he was replaced. The original actor cast in the role of Aragorn was actor Stuart Townsend. He trained with the actors for months, and did all the costume fittings. Sadly once they started filming, Peter Jackson realized his mistake. Stuart, who was 28 at the time production began was coming off as too young on camera. While still spry, Aragon's race lives a long time, and he's 170 in the book. They needed an actor with more gravitas. Enter Vigo. 2. The fellowship leaving Rivendell, and entering Lothlorien were some of the first scenes to be shot and they had not nailed down the makeup for Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom, or Jonathan Rhys Davies. This is why Liv looks younger, (Rivendell) Orland's hair is different looks different, (Lothlorien) and Jonathan does not look like Gimli (Lothlorien). 3. Everyone did not get a Mithril vest, because it is very ancient and rare. Mithril comes from the dwarfs, but the making is by the elves, and they are no longer allies in this time period. That is why the gift was worth more than the Shire. It would be akin to a Pharaoh of Egypt giving your ancestor a garment and it being handed down generation after generation until finally was given to the two of you.

Great reaction ladies...and the edit is top-notch.

We can't undelete but we have it in an email: Just got to Gandalf’s fight with the Balrog, again, amazing watch you two. More nerd: Moria was the dwarves ancient home, it was lost to them due to a “shadow” that chased them off, which was the Balrog buried beneath the earth that survived the last war with Morgoth and the gods and elves and men. Gimlis cousin, Balin, a character in the HOBBIT, led an expedition to reclaim Moria, but no one had heard from him in some time, you now know why. The narrow bridge they cross at the end, where Gandalf made his stand, was designed that way , according to Tolkien, to defend against invaders coming in from the main gate which is where the Fellowship exited from. The secret door, from which they entered (good job Nanette guessing the riddle, friend, “Mellon” in elvish), led to an ancient land called Eregion, where the original rings of Power were made. Regarding the Balrog itself, to give an idea of how old it was, it’s likely the last of its kind, and it was created by the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, Sauron’s old boss, during the time of the elves chronicled in the Silmarilion. That means it’s as old as Gandalf itself, like thousand of years, from the First Age, LOTR takes place at the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth for perspective. Only Gandalf could have defeated it. According to Tolkien, Gandalf’s sacrifice was especially heavy because he knew he was the last of the five wizards who could help Frodo with his quest, something he was absolutely committed to do, and potentially the only one with the power to face some of Sauron’s servants, like the Ring Wraiths, yet, he was certainly the only member of the fellowship who could face the Balrog. Last, look at the position Gandalf takes with his arms after he lets go, Tolkien was big on religious allegory, that might give you a hint about what happens next. Gandalf’s line in the book and in the film, “Fly you fools!

Thank you, Joe! We were worried about missing some of the important lines, but they were able to get most of them in.

Totally Whatever

You were right; we just hit 50k! Love the story of your mom letting you stay home to finish the book and create a core memory. She knew what she was doing. Clearly, you are passing on great parenting - your Fellowship game sounds amazing!

Totally Whatever

As always, thank you for the incredible trivia! We actually hadn't noticed the shift in the characters between Rivendell and Lothlórien, so we’ll definitely have to go back and take a closer look. Also, we knew there had to be more to the story behind the Mithril vest—that context really puts it into perspective.

Joe J

I asked Carolyn for just one hair from her golden head...she gave me NONE, lol.

Joe J

Ladies, neither of you have ever seen these films before right? I couldn't remember if you said you had seen the theatrical versions or not.

Totally Whatever

No, we haven't seen these before. We dove right into the extended cut, as suggested.

It's only three shots (four if you count Gandalf talking with Frodo just before the enter the Mines of Moriah. 1. Liv in the lavender dress when the fellowship are saying good-bye. TC: 01:50:11 (approx.)* 2. Legolas arguing with Haldir to enter Lothlorien. ) 02:31:51 (approx.)* 3. A cut-a-way of Gimli (sans helmet) in the same sequence mentioned above. TC: 02:32:12* * Extended Edition
