Thanks for watching and reacting to "Glory". I find the movie, "Glory", to be very moving and inspiring as an ideal to fight for. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the men were all volunteers. The hope was to end the War and someday unite the country in a better place. When the Confederate Army discovered Col. Shaw's body among his fallen men, he was stripped of his uniform and buried in a mass grave as a show of disrespect. After his body was re-discovered, his family felt that it was honorable that he remain buried with his troops instead of bringing him home to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery as a hero. Equality in military and civilian life was (and is) often slow in coming. I have no military service but my late dad enlisted in the Army Air Corps in the latter years of WWII and was shipped to a base in the South. For the first time he witnessed segregation in the form of separate barracks for Black soldiers as well as separate training facilities. He told me that on base the Black soldiers walked on the 'other' side of the street to their barracks. Military segregation ended many years ago.

This was a very heart-felt reaction, ladies! You talked about how great the performances were in this movie. Denzel Washington won his first Oscar for his role. It was well-deserved.

I owned this movie on VHS back in the day and begged my US History teacher to let us watch it in class. She took the movie home to watch it on her own before deciding to allow us to watch it in class. She loved it and we did watch it in class. I later found out that she made this movie part of her curriculum in the years after. Great movie and reaction!

I remember first watching this film in my history class . I remember tearing up and trying to hide it from my classmates. ha ha! Awesome performances. One thing that gets me though is that, if I remember, I was reading about Robert Shaw's life and apparently he got married shortly before the war began but you don't see this part of his life in the movie at all which seems crazy to me but I guess they were short on time.

Totally Whatever

We are glad to have finally watched this one. Incredibly moving and inspiring, we agree.

Totally Whatever

We love that high school Mark was helping with the curriculum.

Totally Whatever

This had to be a difficult one to watch in class. We would have been doing the same.

Totally Whatever

Boy, were you right! You really delivered on that guarantee.

That's funny how so many of us first saw this in a history class, I did too, high school US History, we had a great teacher and I remember a lot of teachers seemed to get very motivated after "Stand and Deliver" (1988), it's about a teacher lol, inspirational. But Glory is one that everyone should see and I also think it would be great if they made "A Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass" part of every US history class, it's 89 pages (version I read, I think it had notes, the original I think is 70) and it's devastating but powerful. So many people don't know about these things that, if you think about it, were not that long ago. And so many people died over this, but I think of it as one of the few wars that really needed to happen, it was technically two rival versions of capitalism and there's a debate but, at least, the very least, we legally and mostly agreed slavery was really evil and needed to end. Ugh, social media sometimes is so gross, I see people who just, they need to watch this movie but they'd probably call it propaganda. Anyway Denzel Washington of course was amazing, there are aspects of that character that really strike at certain things, the complexity of being a person of color serving and carrying a flag that you love but knowing there will always be some people who will never accept you as equal because you'll always be foreign to them. But whatever, some people just suck.

I also watched this film in my History class back in my Middle school, I don’t remember putting much attention but once I was old enough I rewatched it and had me in tears like you two were. There is another Civil War movie called Gettysburg from 1993, it’s long and that battle was mentioned here in Glory; it was one of the hardest battles ever fought in the Civil War.

Totally Whatever

We didn't see this one in history class, so I'm glad we were able to watch it now. We can add "Stand and Deliver" to our list too. Denzel's layered performance was phenomenal!

Totally Whatever

We have Gettysburg on our list. We are trying to watch all of the big ones that we missed.

2026-09-06 22:00 "I love the 54th." Great reaction. I like your comments about the mix (range) of characters and actors. As noted in the comments, Denzel won his first Oscar. I love this movie – one of my fav movies all time. My top Civil War era movies: Glory, Lincoln (2012), and "The Outlaw Josey Wells" (1976) you reacting to. Maybe you can react to Lincoln (2012) (or at least include in a poll) for MLK Day or Black History Month. Trip raised a legitimate issue w/Shaw as why he did not want to carry the flag. Former slaves were treated like shit after Reconstruction, and then blacks generally suffering through Jim Crow well into the 20th century.
